THESIS
Poverty is affecting thousnds of citizens today, however racialized communities face a disproportionate risk of being affected by it because they are assigned to less desirable position in job duties.

ARGUMENT #1
With the ongoing increasing rates of povery in Toronto, the racialized communites are more affected regarding health problems and all the other factors making them more vulnerable to different factors and situations.

EVIDENCE | ANALYSIS | 1)The original poverty measures were (and still are) based largely on the food costs of the 1950s. But while food costs have doubled since 1978, housing has more than tripled, medical expenses are six times higher, and college tuition is eleven times higher. (J. Epidemol ‘POVERTY AND HEALTH PROSPECTIVE’ pg 189-191)2) To examine the reasons for the association between socioeconomic status and poor health, the authorities examined the nine-year mortality experience of a random sample of residents aged 35 and over in Toronto. Residents of a federally designated poverty area experienced higher age-, race-, and sex- adjusted mortality over the follow-up period compared with residents of nonpoverty areas (relative risk = 1.71, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.20–2.44). This increased risk of death persisted when there was muttivariate adjustment for baseline health status, race, income, employment status, access to medical care, health insurance coverage, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index sleep patterns, social isolation, marital status, depression, and personal uncertainty. 3) A large number of international studies have found that members of racialized groups experience poorer health outcomes compared to members of non-racialized groups and that experiencing racial discrimination contributes to poor health outcomes. Bierman et al.'s (2012) study found differences between racialized and non-racialized groups in access to and satisfaction with primary health care. Black women, South/West Asian/Arab men and women, and East/Southeast Asian women reported more difficulty getting an appointment for a regular check-up than White men and women. Furthermore, South/West Asian/Arab men and women and East/Southeast Asian women reported more difficulty in seeing their doctor for an urgent, non-emergent health problem and lower levels of satisfaction with the care provided. (Levy, Stover ‘ Racialization and health inequalities in Toronto’ pg 30-33) | As poverty is measured on the basis of food costs and factors like housing and medical expenses, even though with time some measures have benn taken to try and reduce poverty but with the increasing in cost of the basic requirements it is not easy to irradicate poverty from the society, the programs or measures taken by the government are not enough to overcome this problem. The government is to blame for the increased in poverty rate.Even with all the things done for the welfare of people, the government introduced some policies and came up with many strategies for their help. But according to the statistics and the data from the past only a certain group of people is affected and privileged by these policies mainly the well to do part of the society, on the other hand the minority groups and the poor class are still suffering as there are no welfare programs that can benefit them. The government says ad pretends that they are doing their best to get rid of poverty but, they are not really doing anything noticeable for the same.In the health sector, if you look at the data from the past years there had not been much improvement in the over all health of the poor and racialized people. Policies said to be beneficial to the underprivileged people are nothing but some rules and suggestion on papers, if these policies had been any functional or beneficial the health rate of the poor would have gone up instead of going down as it is happening. |

ARGUMENT #2
Due to the increase in poverty more and more number of children are affected by poverty leading to less no children being actually educated and thus having a less desired position in job.

EVIDENCE | ANALYSIS | 1) Child poverty in Toronto has reached “epidemic” levels with 29 per cent of children- almost 149,000- living in low income families, among canada’s 13 major cities, Toronto has the highest child poverty rate. Almost 40 % of the city’s 140 neighbourhoods have child poverty rate of 30 % or more, according to the coalition’s analysis of Statistics Canada’s recently released 2012 tax filer data. And residents of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Latin American background are more likely to be living in poverty. ( ‘Toronto Star Newspapers’ Aug 27 2014)2) 29% of Toronto’s 507,810 children ages 0-17 (145,890) live in poverty*. The percentage of Toronto children living on low-incomes increased from 28% to 32% between 1997 and 2004, then declined slowly until 2010, before rising in 2011 and 2012 About 10,200 more children were living in low-income families in 2012 compared to 20103) Data from the Toronto district school board examined student achievement over a five year period. For the 2006 to 2011 cohort, the average drop-out rate was 14 percent. However, the rate among Black and Latin students was much higher (23% and 21%). The lowest drop-out rate was among East Asian and Southeast Asian students (6% and 9%). Data on confirmed acceptance to post-secondary education also showed disparities. On average, 47 percent of students confirmed a university admission. This ranged from 23 percent of Latin and 24 percent of Black students to 73 percent of East Asian and 60 percent of South Asian students. (Levy, Stover ‘ Racialization and health inequalities in Toronto’ pg 20) | Children education is one of the most important things for the good of a nation, but with the increase in number of children under poverty over the past few years says something else, many educational programs are there for children who canr afford their tution fees. Scholarships and may other programs help the children to get a good education. Even after all of these measures taken the total no students dropping high school or not being able to go to school or continue their studies have increased due to various reasons being in a bad financial condition being one of the major one.According to the statistics and the data from the past only a certain group of people is affected and privileged by these policies mainly the well to do part of the society, on the other hand the minority groups and the poor class are still suffering as there are no welfare programs that can benefit them. The number or percentage of students being accepted to post-secondary education is different for students from different backgrounds and different financial conditions. |

ARGUMENT #3
The properties of sociophysical environment are important contributors to the association between low socioeconomic status and excess mortality, and this contribution is independent of individual behaviors.

EVIDENCE | ANALYSIS | 1) Toronto public health’s analysis showed some evidenve that racialized group members were more likely than non racialized group members to experience other psychosocial stressors. While the CCHS analysis showed no differences between groups in the likelihood of reporting life stress or work stress, the results of the NEHW analysis showed that racialized group members were more likely than non-racialized group members to report a high level of life stress because they had lower incomes than non-racialized group members, and racialized group members were more likely to report a high level of work stress than non-racialized group members. (Levy, Stover ‘ Racialization and health inequalities in Toronto’ pg 19)2). The distribution of before-tax individual income among people 15 years of age and over was divided into three groups, so that each group represented approximately one-third of the total population in Toronto. The three income groups are: less than $15,000 (34% of the total popula tion); $15,000 to $39,999 (35%); and $40,000 and over (31%). On average, racialized groups were more likely to earn less than $15,000 (43% versus 27%) and less likely to earn $40,000 or more (21% versus 39%) compared to the non-racialized groups. (Levy, Stover ‘ Racialization and health inequalities in Toronto’ pg 21)3) Inequities between racialized and non-racialized group members in Toronto were found for a number of employment and labour market indicators. Racialized and non-racialized groups had similar labour force participation rates (66% and 65%). . Labour force participation was highest among people who identified as Filipino (76%), Latin American (71%), and those with multiple ethno-racial identities (71%) and lowest among people who identified as Korean (56%) and Japanese (59%). The unemployment rate was higher among racialized than non-racialized groups (10% and 6%). Unemployment rates were highest among people who identified as Arab and Black (12% for both) and lowest among Japanese and Filipino people (6% for both). (Levy, Stover ‘ Racialization and health inequalities in Toronto’ pg 23) | After all the government measures and all the different so called public welfare policies there is still a long way to go before we get completely rid of poverty and the racial discrimination. All this different factors like education, health, income/jobs are affected by the kind of person you are. A poor person will most likely never even think of having a good white collor job. Being poor is the main root to all these different problems in the different sectors. The government instead of launching many small policies for mllions of different things if looks at the bigger picture and take a big step to try and eradicate poverty the solutions to the other problems could be easily found. Making sure that the big problem Is removed the smaller ones can be easily overcomed within no time. All these problems somehow leads to and are affected by one another so instead of going after all of then at the same time if you go slowly but steadly the problems can be overcome pretty easily. |

...Organisational Behaviour U58029 Individual assignment Name: Miguel Zhou Yang Student number: 13083861 Word count: Part 1: Organisational Misbehaviour Organisational behaviour can be defined as the study of what people think, feel and do in and around organisations (Mcshane & Glinow, 2008). Thus, the antonym for Organisational behaviour would obviously be Organisational Misbehaviour which its easiest and simplest definition according to Ackroyd & Thompson (1999) is “Organisational misbehaviour is anything you do at work you are not supposed to do”; however, OM is a wide topic of investigation and the understanding of this subject depends on different aspects, theories and perspectives (Richard, 2008). Other researchers saw misbehaviour as something more linked to relations within an organisation, stating that OM is mainly based on interactions between people and that is relied on ethical issues in employer-employee relationship (Deckop, 2006). This essay will mainly explain and analyse the different types of misbehaviour that can be found in a particular case: The Enron & Arthur Andersen scandal, the “Why’s” and “How’s” these two companies fell into corruption and thus, misbehaviour. Enron & Andersen Enron Corporation was an energy company founded in 1930 based in Houston, Texas. It never shined out until 1996, when the firm was considered as one of the most innovative organisation in the world (Debinski & Al). Enron started lying about its profits...

Ikea Strategy in China

...Ikea Strategy in China I. Ikea strategy in China II. Comparison Supor, ASD and Ikea (regarding to cookware) Sources I. Ikea in China IKEA has been in the Chinese market for more than 10 years. Ikea is used to be perceived as having low prices, this also one of the competitive cornerstones of the whole concept of Ikea. But this is not the case in China: here the perception is a fairly exclusive western retailer, a store for the higher middle class. The company realized this and started targeting the young middle class population, which are between 25 and 35 who have relatively higher incomes than the average and a higher education than the average. They are often more open to a Westernized lifestyle, and in most instances. Targeting this segment helped IKEA project itself as an inspirational western brand. This was a huge change in strategy, as IKEA was targeting the mass market in other parts of the world. Chinese see Ikea products as innovative and not traditional. Square tables are for example not traditional (round tables are tradition) and many of the colours used are not traditional to the Chinese. The Chinese Ikea stores have a special set of tea cups for the Chinese...

...China’s Tainted Baby Milk Powder: Rumored Control of Online News On July 16, 2008, it was announced that several Chinese producers of baby milk powder had been adding melamine, a chemical usually used in countertops, to increase the “richness” of their milk powder and to increase the protein count. Shockingly, the melamine-tainted milk powder was responsible for the deaths of four infants and the sickening of more than 6,200 more.1 Milk manufacturers had been using melamine as a low-cost way of “enriching” their product in both taste and protein count. Melamine, a toxic chemical that makes countertops very durable, damages kidneys. 2 This fact came to world attention on March 16, 2007, when Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, recalled dog and cat foods that it had mixed in Canadafrom Chinese ingredients that were found to include melamine.3 Very quickly thereafter, pet owners claims and class action lawsuits threatened to put the company into bankruptcy until settlements were worked out.4 A subsequent investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) led to the recall of pet food by major manufacturers, including Del Monte, Nestle Purina, Menu Foods, and many others.5 On February 6,2008, “the FDA announced that that two Chinese nationals and the businesses they operate, along with a U.S. company and its president and chief executive offi cer, were indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a scheme to import products purported to be...
