Leo Buscaglia once said, “Change is the end result of all true learning.” (BrainyQuote.com, n.d.). Although change is often discouraged and sometimes unwelcomed in our society, it is necessary in the pursuit of growing and bettering ourselves. This same concept holds true when implementing new evidence-based practices into the healthcare setting. While attempting to reinforce the evolution of healthcare, through new-found proven approaches, resistance is frequently encountered from peers, committees, physicians, and management personnel. “Most attempts to implement evidence-based practices in clinical settings are either only partially successful, or unsuccessful, in the attempt.” (Sales, Smith, Curran, & Kochevar, 2006). This six step model guides nurses and other healthcare professionals through a systematic process for the change to evidence-based practice (Rosswurm & Larrabee, 1999). Step six of this model titled, Integrate and Maintain Change in Practice, outlines proceedings in order to promote and retain evidence-based practice changes in the healthcare setting (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.289). Actions for this crucial step include: sharing recommendations to stakeholders and administrative leaders, providing in-service education to providers, and making plans for ongoing outcome indicator monitoring (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.289). While incorporating this step, it is critical to include the strength of evidence while conducting in-services to providers, as this decreases the rate of noncompliance during the implementation phase (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, …show more content…
The purpose of this model is to “provide healthcare institutions and clinical settings with an organized conceptual framework that can guide system-wide implementation and sustainability of evidence-based practice to achieve quality outcomes” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.289). This model utilizes a twelve-month program approach in which a group of evidence-based practice mentors work directly with point-of-care clinicians in the pursuit of implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice throughout an entire institution (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.293). During this twelve-month period, a series of six workshops are conducted in order to provide education and skill building sessions focused on implementing the seven-step evidence-based practice process (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.293). “The final step in the ARCC model is for evidence-based practice mentors and other clinicians who practice according to the evidence-based practice paradigm to have an impact on provider, patient, and system outcomes” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p.294).
