Misscommunication

...Communication Recommendation’s MR slone Interpersonal Communication Summer Beretsky 02/11/2013 Dear Chris and Shelbie I am writing to you to give you some advice on Interpersonal Communication. I will explain on the importance of this to have a long and healthy relationship and of course how to communicate effectively. There are tons of topics to explore to do this but I have chosen in my eyes the top five to explore and explain for you. Make sure to take this advice on and apply this to your relationship and you will watch it flourish into much more. Identify the barriers to effective communication I will start out with the common barriers and how to get past them. The three common barriers are Silence, placating, and playing games. Silence is something that is used a lot against each other in a relationship when one is mad or hurt or as some might understand it as the silent treatment. One marriage therapist reports that people most commonly resort to silence when they are angry and/or hurt, when they are unable to communicate their feelings, or when they want to punish their partner (Slupesky, 2010). This can be very unhealthy for your relationship and can be very phsycologicalely damaging. It is best no matter the situation or why you’re mad or angry to always be open and honest. The only way to get past the anger or hurt is my communicating to each other. Sure in some point in life we have all used this to in our own way teach our partner a lesson. This is something...

Or have the ability to understand what they are feeling? I would say all of us, in one time or another has done it. I know I have. Purchasing a new home or a loss of someone special are some of the examples, we can relate of sharing someone’s emotional state. From birth we are showed the principles of appreciation by imitating our parents thru their sympathy towards us. As we grow up we develop skills that help us learn how to be good listeners, have feeling and show compassion for another human being. Undivided attention is one of the key of showing empathetic to a person. We always tend to interrupt to get our point across. Listening is not a talent that is easy to develop. Hearing is when you listen but you are thinking about something else, and listening is something you choose to do, while at the same time you are analyzing what the person is saying. It is recognizing not only what is said but how it was said. While listening is a big factor, sharing the person affection is part of it as well. Fear, anger and happiness are some of the emotions we uncover when we portray empathy. It’s very difficult to relate with them at the time you are having a situation being explain to yourself. You have to gain experience thru the years to know how to express them. Most of the persons can relate to them because they...

Effective Listening Strategies

...Effective Listening Strategies BSHS 385 April 21, 2015 Dr. Barbara Hughson Effective Listening Strategies Effective listening is an important part of the human service profession. This paper will review three articles about effective listening. For each article, I will provide a summary that includes my thoughts of the article, what was learned about effective listening, and how I can apply it to my daily life as a human service professional. I will also discuss my thoughts on how I will use these strategies and how effective they may be. The first article I read is called “Listen Carefully." This article is discussing teaching listening skills to school-aged children. Some of the research reviewed shows the importance of listening when it comes to human learning and development. Learning how to listen is the first skill in language most children will develop first. Once children begin school, listening becomes even more important because the majority of what children learn is through listening. An interesting fact to me was when McPherson (2008) stated, “Teaching listening skills to middle school at-risk readers improved their reading comprehension scores and found that listening to a story while reading the story's words also improved elementary children's reading comprehension.” (McPherson, 2008) This speaks volumes to me especially when the teaching of listening skills in the classroom is not being done today. Teachers who start teaching listening strategies have...

Outline the Primary Skills Used in Counselling Relationships

...Outline the primary skills used in counselling relationships This essay intends to introduce the reader to the most important skills involved within developing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship between a client and the therapist or counsellor. The onus will be on Humanistic counselling but many of these skills are central to all counselling types. Humanistic counselling is a process whereby the eventual goal is to facilitate the client in developing a personal understanding of self, and form a realisation of their own psychological needs and desires. It is, in essence, a route to empowerment for the client. Carl Rogers, father of client-centred therapy, described the client as an ‘organism’ whose natural tendency is a need to grow and develop: "The organism has one basic tendency and striving - to actualize, maintain, and enhance the experiencing organism” (Rogers, 1951, p. 487). This ‘actualisation tendency’ can only happen with the help of the therapist and their establishment of the perfect growing conditions. It is these that help launch the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and client: “If I can provide a certain type of relationship, the other person will discover within himself the capacity to use the relationship for growth and change, and personal development will occur” (Rogers, 2004, p. 33). There are six conditions involved in a therapist-client relationship. The first involves the client and therapist entering into a psychological contract...

The major themes of the text are centered on these components. Nonviolent communication is rooted in the notion of giving from the heart, and the four components listed above are the steps that Rosenberg states are the beginnings to giving form the heart in communication. Using Language Effectively

...Week Two Individual: Using Language Effectively Maria Lobitos XCOM/200 March 23, 2013 Ellen Riordan The importance of listening in communication is colossal. “The importance of listening in communication is often well illustrated when we analyze our listening skills with those closest to us.” (Staiano. 2006.) For example, when we are conversing with family members such as spouse and children. When our children are talking sometimes we respond with uh-huh when they are trying to tell us something. Then when we are asked with a question, we respond with, “I am so sorry but what did you say again?” We tend not to listen completely because we are occupied on coming up with a response. Also even when listening to a music. Our mind tend to wonder and not really paying attention to the words of the song we are listening to. One of my experience in the past in regards to having a hard time listening was when we had a staff meeting at work and I was not able to properly decode information that did not make sense to me. It is because my own attitude of “already know the topic” that I brought to the staff meeting had an effect to my ability to listen to the manager. Since I already knew the topic, I was not that focus to the what the manager was saying and when the time came and the manager asked a question, I was not ready to respond. I was more preoccupied with my own thoughts that I did not focus on the message. Also, since the topic has been discussed many times...

Communication

...techniques Active listening- it refers to listening attentively with one’s whole being. It requires the person to acknowledge and respond, giving appropriate feedback, and pay attention to the other’s total communication, including the content, the intent, and the feelings expressed. ( Potter & Perry, 2001) Empathy- refers to the ability to understand and accept another’s reality, to accurately perceived feelings, and to communicate this understanding to other. To express empathy, the nurse reflects understanding of the importance of what is communicated by the other person on a feeling level. Such empathetic understanding requires the nurse to be sensitive to the other person’s thoughts and feelings ( Northouse & Northouse, 1998). Silence- This is particularly useful when a person is confronted with decisions that require much thought. Silence can allow the nurse to pay particular attention to nonverbal messages such as worried expressions. To remain silent can demonstrate the nurse’s patience and willingness to wait for a response when the other person is unable to reply quickly. It may be especially therapeutic during times of profound sadness and grief ( Potter & Perry, 2001). Clarifying- This technique is used to check whether understanding is accurate, the nurse can restate an unclear message to clarify the sender’s meaning. Instead of restating the message, the nurse can also ask the person to restate it, explain further, or given an example of what the person...
