...Final paper A huge issue that the United States has is the High School education system. Students have little or no preparation for life after high school compared to other nations which poses a disadvantage when trying to further their education. The United States is one of or the most powerful countries but continually flows short in the educational system. One of the major issues is the lack of the arts within the academic system. They focus today is typically how to take an exam. For example, Florida focuses so much on the FCAT that they typically focus only on English and Math. High Schools keep using this “Teaching to the Test “technique, which only teaches students how to prepare for the FCAT and this narrows the curriculum a lot. This issue leads to the question, “Is the Geography and Math knowledge of an American student as good as European student?” Every year a test is given to every student in High School. This test has basic questions about Geography and it measures the level of every student within their grade. Back in 2010 after collecting back the test from students and grading it, the National Assessment of Education Progress publicized that only a 25% of American schoolchildren passed the test and that only a 20% of 12th graders passed. This is probably one the saddest news America had to deal with when speaking of education. After the news was published to the public, Daniel Edelson, vice president for education with the National Geographic Society...

...Bird agues that college is a waste of time because the majority of college students go to college for social and economic reasons. Very few actually go to learn and have the desire to be there. And he think students were not happy at all. They felt like it was time in a jail cell. It is just a stage which is taken by a lot of teenagers who don’t even know what to do with their lives. This excerpt is clearly directed towards raising awareness among the high school graduates concerning college education, as well as the general public. I find it quite puzzling that the author of the excerpt has purposed to demonize higher education and yet she has a master’s and a bachelor’s degree from two separate universities, which points out to the importance of higher education. However, this is not true. College is a fundamental stage during someone’s life, in which we are taught the basic skills related to the field which we are interested in. Furthermore, we learn to be independent and to make new friends, who will be able to help us in the future. Bird argues that higher education is a complete waste of time since the majority of the students attend college because of economic and social reasons. She further states that only a handful certainly have the desire to be in college and learn. Bird presents this statement with the evidence of Professors and Administrators estimations that no more than 25% of students are turned on by classwork. And the reason many students are there is because of...

...interesting. I am just a woman, working hard to be someone that my late parents, my son, my husband and family can be proud of. I am a twenty five year old woman who has four very full-time jobs at this moment in my life. A mother to my eight year old son, a wife, an Elementary Education major, and a high-volume restaurant manager (when my time is not being occupied by the most important things in my life). If you have not already done the math in your head, like most people do when I tell them how old my son and I are; I was sixteen years old when I gave birth to him. I was never the girl that anyone expected that from, I did not even expect it would happen to me. I was always a model student and the perfect little girl. But it happened. I was determined to make sure that my son and I did not become “just another statistic.” I gave up most of my hobbies and put my dreams on hold as I focused on finishing high school and providing for my son. My parents were a huge help as I began my journey into single motherhood. They were my biggest motivators and supporters; they just wanted me to get at least my high school diploma. I did. I graduated six months early, actually. I was the first person in my family since my paternal grandmother to actually finish with a diploma and not a GED. When I was younger, before I had my son, I loved to read and write. I remember the first time I read a page out of a book to my mom. I was so proud of myself. I think it was more memorization...

...Baldwin about the program, I was very intrigued. I’m a huge fan of Gilmore Girls, but specifically Rory Gilmore. She’s my age when the show begins and she’s very brilliant in many ways, but most importantly she makes excellent grades and ends up attending a private school called Chilton that only accepts students with outstanding academic achievements. I’ve always felt a connection with this character for many reasons, but I always felt that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college, let alone, a school like that until I was proved wrong. Where I’m from, a small town with sparse job opportunities, most people either end up working in fast food or at the grocery store, or having to drive 30 minutes to an hour in order to get to a job that pays well. Most of the students at my high school believe that they’re destined for the same fate, mostly the latter, and no one ever really gets out of here. I ,personally, don’t desire to walk down that beaten path of being financially unstable and unhappy. There’s no way to happy in a place full of drug use and nothing to do for moral fun. Not to mention...

...Teresa Flanagan Individual Transition Plan Shenandoah University Transitions for Students with Disabilities SED 575 June 25, 2014 Individual Transition Plan OVERVIEW: Student J is a 14-year-old eighth grader at Seneca Ridge Middle School. He was found eligible for special education services in September 2008 as a student with Other Health Impairment (OHI) and a secondary label of an emotional disability (ED). When student J was in his late elementary school years he experienced inability to interact with his peers and maintain social relationships, and was observed shutting down and displaying self-destructive behaviors. There were interventions and accommodations implemented in elementary school including a behavioral plan, which was revised each year he was in middle school, based on what his interests were which were used as the motivators and rewards he would receive for displaying appropriate behavior and completing work. Student J became academically successful and was showing great progress at the end of seventh grade. During his 8th grade year he went through the reevaluation process and was found continued eligible under the same primary and secondary labels. The areas of concern for Student J were identified as problems with using appropriate language, and the same behaviors of shutting down when he was experiencing frustration. This cased a lack of progress in content subject areas during his eighth grade year. Student J receives special education services...

Every year, millions of people throughout the world go to University. Getting a university education will help create so many paths and give a better life. Various kind of people go to university for different goals, ambitions and reasons. As for me, a university education is important to improve my chance of getting my dream job. I personally see university education as a good and solid investment, primarily because I will use all skills I get from the university for the rest of my life and according to Collegeboard, “The typical bachelor’s degree holder can expect to earn about 73 percent more over a 40-year working life than the typical high school graduate earns over the same time period “. There are many other important benefits of university education, such as it will definitely help one to improve oneself and become a more prepared and marketable person for stepping out into this world. A university education will teach self-discipline, improve one’s ability to develop thinking skills and expand the ability to work with other people from different backgrounds and cultures. Moreover, university education helps people to solve problems in an amicable and easy way. One also learn how to avoid...

...Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become graduates. The graduation ceremony is a cultural tradition that is considered a rite of passage. The ceremony marks a transition from one stage in a student's life to another. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as grandaunts. The date of graduation is often called graduation day. The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. In case of study and education graduation is the meaning of getting a higher degree of three years after 10+2 from a university or college, but that degree must come under the degree of graduation. Quite apart from that though, the graduation ceremony fulfills an essential human function as a ritual of transition, in this case marking the move from student to worker. The whole idea of graduation is believed to have started in the 12th Century, introduced by scholastic monks who wore robes during the entire graduation ceremony. It has kept on evolving ever since. Gill, L. (2012, January 15). Convocation and its importance. Graduation. Retrieved August 7, 2012. Scholars, especially anthropologists, consider graduation to be a rite of passage. A rite of passage is a ritual that marks a change from one stage of life to the next in a person’s life. The pomp and ceremony of the graduation ceremony can lend itself to accusations of irrelevance and elitism. Such criticisms I think...

...Bisola Mary Bello SPEA –V 443: Social Class Assignment. August 11th 2014 3:21 AM. 1. Discuss and explain PEW’s definition of social class in America and how it pertains to income, society and culture. The definition of social class according to Pew research and based on the results of their survey is the stratification of individuals based on income, education level, financial satisfaction, occupation wealth and prestige. Based on those factors individuals are grouped into levels of socioeconomic class namely: upper class, upper-middle class, lower-middle class, and lower class. For the sake of their survey, Pew research grouped together the individuals in the lower-middle class and lower class into one group. Any observer of American society would quickly note that there are large variations in wealth, material possessions, power and authority, and prestige in our society. They would also note differences in access to education, healthcare and leisure. Income is one of the biggest measures or indicator of socioeconomic status. In the United States there is inequality in the distribution of income. Those in the upper class aka the elite represent the smallest percentage of the population yet they hold majority of the income. The opposite can be said for their friends at the end of the spectrum, they make us the largest part of the population and have the least amount of the income. According to Leonard Beeghley a household income of roughly $95,000 would be typical...

...A College Education Today There are numerous reasons why people yearn for a college education. Most students that were surveyed all seem to have similar answers. I think that would be most logical considering they are already people who have enrolled and believe in a higher education. Many of my findings in both Rereading America and other articles from present day, seem to explain a different side of perspective that is not always talked about amongst students. Perhaps, it is an underlying factor that wishes to be ignored to remind ourselves that we are all on the right path. Horace Mann was a firm believer in the concept of an education. Many students I surveyed seem to agree with his arguments, but not exactly in such a way that Mann explained. For example, he claimed everyone should have access to education because “in a social and political sense, it [would be] a free school system. It [would know] no distinction of rich and poor, of bond and free” (Mann). This may have been the case in 1848, however; in current times, the schools systems do know these distinctions when it comes to the people of society. Unfortunately, many people do not always get what they want out of the college experience, and now “the Reagan administration official recently spoke with U.S. News about what prospective students should be thinking about, what they get for their buck and why a bachelor's degree is no longer synonymous with success” (Berger). College education may not be for...

...Is College Worth it? Right now in our society a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying that says, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." However, as technology is constantly advancing and computers are running almost anything, is a college education really necessary? There are people whom have never set foot in a college and are doing better than people who have their master's degree. There are views from both sides that contain a valid argument. The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is "the right thing to do." In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote, titled "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because ". . . Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these "mentors" know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful. Let's face it; going to college is socially prestigious. Most people go to college only for the...

...In America, if a student wants to go to college they have to pay a sustainable amount to be able to do so. The cost of college has greatly increased in the past few decades. The high cost discourages minorities and poor students from attending college. Many students take out student loans to be able to afford college, but then struggle later in life with paying off those loans. Higher level jobs are beginning to require college education to even be considered and this can come troubling to those who are not able to afford college. In this essay I intend to explain the problems with the high costs of college, introduce a policy to fix the cost of college, and introduce the opposing side to my research. Congress should address the issue of the high cost of college because it is impacting our job market. A better educated society leads to a more educated nation, so it is in the best interest...

...DR: My Pedagogical Experience dr University of Texas Pan American June 11, 2012 My Pedagogical Experience Introduction: Like most South Texas residents, I come from a large family. Unfortunately this largely Hispanic population has several members in their families that lack a proper education. For example, my mother dropped out of school so she can support a family. As a single parent, my mother strived everyday to maintain us, so that we would have everything that we needed for school. My mother has always supported me in my education, and she always pushed me to do better so I would get a diploma and continue my education to get a bachelors degree. It is extremely important that I have a successful future. I not only have to think about myself but for my new family. By having an educational background not only will I provide my family with a secure and stable future but also hope to give the kids in my community a chance to have a bright future as well. I was first inspired to become a teacher when I attended Kelly Elementary. Ms. Palacios, the best teacher I ever had, was truly one of a kind. To this day I have not seen any teachers that have the true passion to teach and inspire young minds like Ms. Palacios was able give me. Several of them are just there for the pay and because they get several days off. Junior High was truly an eye awakening experience for me. For the first time I felt pressured to do better in order to graduate in the top ten...

...Education in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved By: Dr. Barbara Day Dr. Frank Brown Dr. Sandra Hughes-Hassell Dr. Teresa Petty Dr. Xue Lan Rong i © 2009 Nichole Lynnette Smith ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Nichole Lynnette Smith: A Study of Middle Grades Students’ Reading Interests, Habits, and Achievement (Under the direction of Dr. Barbara Day, Advisor) Reading has become an area of concern among the American culture in the past decade. The amount of time the American public spends reading is declining quickly, and its most frequent drop has been among its youngest readers, elementary school students (National Endowment for the Arts, 2004). McKool’s (2007) research has found that there is a “strong relationship between the amount of out-of-school reading a student engages in and his or her success in school” (p. 111). It has also been found that students’ academic levels do not remain the same with no growth, but their academic levels actually drop if they do not read in their free time (Hughes- Hassell & Lutz, 2006). The current literature focuses on younger students, especially those in elementary school. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential differences of what influences middle grades students’ reading interests, leisure reading habits, and reading and academic achievement. This study found that gender, race or ethnicity, parents’ educational levels, academic success (grades), and citizenship did not influence middle school students reading...
