The lakes water supply primarily comes from the Catawba River. The lake is man-made and used to create hydroelectricity by Duke Power Company. Lake Wylie is a large lake and offers an abundance of space for recreation and activities including: boating, fishing, water skiing, sun bathing, swimming and numerous other activities around the lake. It is enjoyed by many people during the summer time. Safety on the water becomes a problem with so many people participating in water activities. Several People die and many others are injured each year in association with the lake. The first thing that comes to mind when being around water is being able to swim. Many people die each year while being on the lake because they cannot swim or not very strong swimmers. Some people think its not cool to wear a life jacket so they jump into the lake without wearing one. They can swim for a short while but they become exhausted and are not close enough to grab on to anything and they struggle to keep their head above the water. Other children were never taught how to swim at all and they think they will be fine hugging onto a float or noodle but they can lose their grip and down they go. The water is dark and by the time someone notices it is to late. The lake water itself is a safety concern. There have been reports...

...Abstract Businesses must always market their products and services to those they think will purchase them. But do one’s social characteristics such as their social class, gender, race, or age affect how businesses market to them? How does targeted marketing affect consumer consumption? The purpose of this paper is to introduce the field of conspicuous consumption and how certain social characteristics influences buying behavior and how businesses target consumers based on these differences. Social Characteristics, Business and Consuming How do social characteristics such as race, gender and class impact businesses? How do these social characteristics influence consumer choice? Businesses are a part of society so it makes sense that that one can influence the other. Businesses market to their key demographic all the time in order to specifically cater their products or services to their intended customer base but there is a relatively new phenomenon that shows some individuals in a lower socioeconomic class artificially try to portray themselves as being in a higher class than they really are. This type of “show boating” of certain status symbols can influence a business and their decision to expand their marketing efforts to groups outside their originally intended customer base. This phenomenon is called “conspicuous consumption” and is defined by Patsiaouras and Fitchett (2012, p. 154) as the “competitive and extravagant consumption practices and leisure...

...Chapter Five Ecotourism and Green Productivity in Bangladesh Ruby Afroze Part B Selected Country Papers Introduction Bangladesh is a country of vast, largely unknown and unspoiled natural beauty and reserves, which are simply unique and fascinating. These natural phenomena are composed of hills and vales, forests, rivers, lakes, sea and beaches, and the evergreen landscape embracing the country. Bangladesh emerged as an independent country in 1971 after a nine-month war of liberation. It was previously called Bengal. The country, comprising an area of 144 000 km2, is situated in the northeastern side of the South Asia sub-continent. The topography is mainly flat alluvial plain, criss-crossed by the world’s three mighty river systems, the Padma (Ganges), the Jamuna and the Meghna and their innumerable tributaries. The east and the northeast of the country joins India, and the southeastern part, adjoining Myanmar, is mainly hilly with dense forest. This area comprises Chittagong and the three Hilly Districts (as they are known) of Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari, with an average elevation of 610 m. These folded ranges run parallel to each other in the north–south direction and the hill slopes are generally enveloped by dense virgin forest. In the south and southwest, alongside the coast of the Bay of Bengal, lies the Sundarbans, better known as a swampy tropical mangrove forest, the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger. These areas are all ideal for...

...INTRODUCTION Campaigning for an ocean classic yacht race is a project. The campaign has a starting point, which can be defined, and the end of the race is the end of the project (1). It involves a process, which requires management if the objectives are to be defined and achieved. Unlike many other projects where success may be open to debate and achievement of objectives may be unclear this is a project in which project success or failure is as clear as the race results. As an interesting and atypical project type, it provides excellent opportunities to illustrate, examine, and question the application and operation of the project management framework. The project was successful. The objectives were achieved; the races were won. This paper will briefly present, as a project, the campaign, which culminated in the winning of both the 1992 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the 1992 Kodak Asia Pacific Ocean Racing Championship. The phases of the project life-cycle-concept, development, execution, and finishing (2); the four basic project management functions-management of scope, quality, time, and cost; and the other essential project management functions-human resource management, communications management, contract/procurement management, and risk management-will be discussed in relation to the project. As a case study, a project management framework is applied to the project, in retrospect. Many project managers tackle their tasks without conscious reference to the various...

...Top of Form Introduction The utilization of resources and generation of waste is for beyond the limit that the biosphere was made to carry. Infact, man today is caught in the vicious circle of increasing wants, declining resources and increasing waste being generated by the industries and municipalities is posing a problem of enormous dimensions. The domestic and industrial effluents are contributing in enhancing this problem. It might become the biggest problem if it is not dealt with immediately . Industrial Waste The term industrial waste is generally understood to refer specifically to the liquid waste produced as a result of some industrial operation, as distinct from an industry’s solid refuse or its gases, fumes and vapors. Like municipal sanitary sewage, most of such liquids must ultimately be disposed of into rivers or other water courses. The liquid wastes of a community, whether domestic sewage or industrial wastes, should receive appropriate treatment before discharge into streams in order to prevent gross pollution. The treatment methods for domestic sewage are based on a fundamental and growing body of knowledge. These methods, however, are not suitable for industrial wastes, which are quite varied in character. Frequently anew industrial process development will produce a waste that is not amenable to treatment by any of the conventional methods. For such wastes, laboratory investigations followed by pilot-plant studies must precede final design of treatment...

...question a writer’s ideas. As a result, the common defense of “that’s my opinion” does not matter much as a reason to support an essay’s ideas. What does matter for a class that requires a textbook such as this one is writing that shows critical thought and (often) outside research. The first step towards writing with these qualities is an understanding that it does not stand alone as an opinion. In fact, college-level writing acknowledges and engages with the ideas of others who have also often done some critical thinking and outside research on the topic. Essentially, college professors want essays that exchange ideas with other readers and writers rather than present ideas on the level of opinions. This is not to say that a student’s ideas do not count in college writing. The process to a completed paper does often begin with one’s own point of view, and professors encourage students to have their own opinions. Understanding that a personal opinion only begins the process, however, is the first step towards improving one’s writing. An Academic “Argument” The word argument often brings to mind attorneys battling in a courtroom or employees demanding a raise. As in these scenarios, a writer of an academic paper also wants to...

...CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION I. Brief History Many theories have been postulated to account for the origin of the people inhabiting the mountain regions of the Philippines. The Land Bridge Theory claims that the Philippines was part of the Southern Asia Mainland and the Northern Luzon maintain tribes that came through these bridges during the last glacial period between 1200 and 1500 B.C. Contradictory to these assumptions is the Wave Migration Theory, which occurred thousands of years after the disappearance of the land bridges in 3,000-4,000 B.C. The theory states that groups of migrants came by boat from the neighboring lands during the Neolithic period. The Neolithic culture, which they brought with them, is still evident in the rice terraces, cloth weaving and the use of iron implements. Scholars differ in their contentions of the mountain people’s ancestors, however, a prominent number supports the contention that the ancestors of the mountain people came from the South East Asia Mainland. In the process of settling down, the early inhabitants became geographically isolated from one another. The long period of isolation and adaptation to the environment gave rise to variations of culture. When the Spaniards came to the Philippines, they were able to set foot in the Cordilleras as early as 1608 but with minimal influence. They were able to establish commandancias in Benguet, Ifugao and Kalinga-Apayao but their stay did not last long enough to pacify...

...Maryland’s Geology From the Atlantic coast on the east to the Appalachian Plateau on the west, Maryland has a great variety of geology and landforms. Maryland is part of six physiographic provinces (shown in the figure below). A physiographic province is a geographic area in which the geology (including lithology and structure) and climate history have resulted in landforms that are distinctly different from adjacent areas. An overview of the geology by physiographic province is provided below. Atlantic Coastal Plain The Atlantic Coastal Plain Province is underlain by a wedge of unconsolidated sediments including gravel, sand, silt, and clay, which overlaps the rocks of the eastern Piedmont along an irregular line of contact known as the Fall Zone. Eastward, this wedge of sediments thickens to more than 8,000 feet at the Atlantic coast line. Beyond this line is the Atlantic Continental Shelf Province, the submerged continuation of the Coastal Plain, which extends eastward for at least another 75 miles where the sediments attain a maximum thickness of about 40,000 feet. The sediments of the Coastal Plain dip eastward at a low angle, generally less than one degree, and range in age from Triassic to Quaternary. The younger formations crop out successively to the southeast across Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore. A thin layer of Quaternary gravel and sand covers the older formations throughout much of the area. Mineral resources of the Coastal Plain are chiefly sand and...

...Bangladesh. Even we, when first assigned with this particular topic as our research project, did not have clear idea what ecotourism exactly was all about. Later, we studied in detail regarding the concept and got to what ecotourism actually is. Two topics that have attracted growing interest in anthropology in the past decade or two are tourism and the environment. Regarding tourism, increasingly people see vacations as a necessary corrective for what they perceive as a more and more stressful working life. Increasingly also, people see the environment as under threat from the profit‐seeking growth that drives corporations. Ecotourism can be broadly defined as an idea of leisure travel that has the object of enjoying features of what is seen as the natural environment in a way that has minimal negative consequences for the environment. Ecotourism is generally taken to include a sociocultural element, the intention of seeing and interacting with people (often identified as “indigenous”) whose customs and appearance seem exotic and attractive and doing so in a way that respects and benefits them. Bangladesh has lots of marvelous tourism spots but most of them are still unexplored by the relevant authority. Having all the minimum requirements, the tourism industry could not develop adequately in Bangladesh. The cracks of problem could not be identified accurately because of paucity of sufficient number of research and investigations in our country. Nowadays, sustainability is getting...
