As time has passed throughout the years there have been multiple persuasive arguments regarding the topic of fear as a harmful or necessary emotion. What exactly is fear? Fear presents itself as a distressful emotion when faced with danger. Fear is sensed when the brain releases chemicals that later flow through the body causing awareness of one's surroundings. Many people strongly believe that this particular sensation is a threat to one’s way of life by inflicting pain and misfortune, while others may disagree by suggesting that fear is a necessary survival tactic proven to steer people away from danger. Fear is both harmful and useful. Moreover, despite the considerable amount of evidence, Fear is rarely a helpful emotion.
The sensation of fear is capable of influencing and manipulating people’s sense of morality and identity. For instance in The Crucible by Arthur Miller on page 667, Danforth is afraid to lose authority over the townspeople living in Salem and responds by saying, “ Twelve are already executed: the names of these seven are given out, and the …show more content…
The only thing to fear is fear itself, for it can easily dismantle the strongest and most wisest opponents. Although, there are some instances in which fear was overcomed by one of the main protagonist of the Crucible, John Proctor. John Proctor was accused of being associated with witchcraft and was bound to hang along with other victims. Proctor was given the choice to save himself and

Essay On Fear Of African Americans

...A common feeling amongst humans is “fear” which is felt when one feels like someone or something is dangerous. Fear is brought on by the sense of danger which leads people to become more cautious of their every move. This feeling is one African Americans experience not because they are always feeling afraid of something but because of the action of “segregation” setting them apart from the whites. The isolated feeling is done through “discrimination” demonstrated by the whites unjust treatment of African Americans. The ever-present fear that African Americans experience within society has been embedded through generations of segregation and discrimination causing Black people to believe they must hide behind a mask and to believe they must act “twice as good” in order to protect their body. Falling victim to generations of segregation and discrimination, African Americans experience a constant feeling of fear. Baldwin explores the idea of the segregated world in which he lives when he “discovered the weight of white people in the world. [he] saw that this had been for [his] ancestors and now would be for [him] an awful thing to live with and...

The Gift of Fear

...“The Gift Of Fear,” a psychology book written by Gavin De Becker, is an extremely useful and informative read. It gives valuable advice about how to act upon human intuition, how to recognize threats, and defines what real fear is and it’s purpose. I found the book to be extremely interesting. This book provided me with a sense of understanding on violence and fear and I feel much better prepared when it comes to recognizing dangerous situations. My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when a stranger is a potential threat. This was fascinating to me because I’ve been told since I was just a little boy to beware of strangers. But with all these warnings about strangers I had never been told how to recognize when a stranger was being genuinely helpful and friendly, or trying to harm me in any way. I found some of the warning signs intriguing such as a method called Forced Teaming. Stranger’s use forced teaming to create a sense of trust. They team themselves together with their victim by saying “we” and making it seem like they’re closer than they really are to their victims by pairing them together. Other warning signs were fairly obvious such as Discounting The Word No. This means that the stranger won’t leave when you ask him to. However, something I did learn by reading about this was that if you let the stranger get away with discounting the word no just once you have given them control. They feel as if you are weak and can be easily convinced. The proper...

Informal Learning

...Informal Learning The fear of heights or acrophobia seems to be a normal fear for those afflicted with it. It would seem that this fear is a basic way to protect ourselves from falls that could do serious harm. This fear is not universal, and luckily so. We would have many unclean windows on skyscrapers and our electric lines would be out of repair or nonexistent. This paper will look at the informal learning experience that can bring about acrophobia. Informal learning is an undirected form of learning that does not take place under an instructor or in a class room. It is generally unconscious and difficult to quantify. Focusing on acrophobia, the idea that heights are dangerous is all-around us. There are signs around us telling us to avoid the top of the ladder or gates to keep people from the roof. Looking at these examples a natural deduction would be that it is dangerous and should be avoided. Heights themselves are not dangerous but the potential to fall off them are. So a fear of heights is not as rational as a fear of falling. I was told not to climb in the tree out back but a friend, and I did anyway. We continued to climb until it began to get difficult and I watched him fall from the tree and break his arm badly. I clambered down the tree and after confirming with him that he was alright. I ran for help. We were not punished for our actions but told that these are the results of climbing in the trees. This informal education was an eye opener...

Survival

...unexpected survival situation man has the potential to overcome many challenges, beat incredible odds, and come out a survivor. But just what is survival anyway? Survival is the art of surviving beyond any event. To survive means to remain alive; to live. Survival is taking any given circumstance, accepting it, and trying to improve it, while sustaining your life until you can get out of the situation. And most importantly, survival is a state of mind. Survival depends a great deal on a person's ability to withstand stress in emergency situations. Your brain is without doubt your best survival tool. It is your most valuable asset in a survival situation. It isn't always the physically strong who are the most effective or better at handling fear in emergency situations. Survival more often depends on the individual's reactions to stress than upon the danger, terrain, or nature of the emergency. To adapt is to live. Mental skills are much more important than physical skills in survival situations. A person's psychological reactions to the stress of survival can often make them unable to utilize their available resources. You most likely won't use your physical skills if you don't have a positive mental attitude. One definitely must be in the proper frame of mind to survive an unplanned survival situation. Attitude or psychological state is most certainly number one. It is undoubtedly the most important ingredient of survival. With the proper attitude almost anything is possible...

This writing is about people’s fears, and shows you not-so-scary stuff. What is fear anyways? Fear is when our survival instincts react to something your brain feels it is dangerous. Fear is what tries to react to something your brain feels it is dangerous. Fear is what tries to keep you safe, and alerts you from danger. In “Fears and Phobias” it says “Fear helps protect us. It makes us alert to danger prepares us to deal with it.” Fear just protects us. The fear is our survival instincts, just trying to keep us safe from what we are afraid of. Being afraid of something is okay, so you shouldn’t be embarrassed about it, because everyone has something to be afraid of, or something that keeps you cautious or safe. Definition Essay About Fear

...Fear ‘’You,gain strength courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face...You must do the thing you think you cannot do’’. This quote was said by Eleanor Roosevelt it is talking about fear and how experience confidence and courage come with practice when we say no to fear and just doing our thing. Dictionary definition of fear says it's an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. His terrorization of her through physical violence is all he truly has, because he is not actually running anything. I believe he brings in the snake into the house, because it is his final plot for ultimate control. The snake then becomes a symbol of his authoritarian masculine energy. I believe Hurston intended this as Delia's true fear. It also reflects the shifting women's issues at the time. At this time many women were gaining rights to vote, and finding their independence. So, the collective fear for women in society was often the heavy- handed dictatorship of a man. Contrasted, the men in society were afraid of losing their control over women. Parallel with this, we can see Delia’s anxiety of the snake also being her fear of Sykes rule over her. The snake looming in the...
