...A Different Shot My chosen text is “In Creve Coeur, Missouri” by Rosanna Warren. Only in Creve Coeur would an expert photographer firebug snap a shot so eloquent: fireman bent low over the rag of body held like impossible laundry pulled too soon from the line, too pale, too sodden with smoke to flail in his huge, dark, crumpled embrace. He leans to the tiny face. her hair stands out like flame. She is naked, she has no name. No longer a baby, almost a child, not yet a ghost, she presses a doll-like fist to his professional chest. Her head falls back to his hand. Tell us that she will stand again, quarrel and misbehave. He is trying to make her breathe Strong man, you know how it’s done, you've done it again and again sucking the spirit back to us from its lair of smoke. We'll call it a fine surprise The snapshot won a prize and the fireman saved her that night in Creve Coeur. 9/11, the Columbine Massacre, the Holocaust, Hurricane Katrina. All four were terrible and sad events. Yet, the photographs taken of these events are some of the most moving in the world. They may show some of the saddest things one can imagine, but they are still looked at as beautiful. The photographers of these events are said to be masters of their craft, and they receive praise from thousands of people, but what about the family members of those depicted in these pictures. How would you feel if you lost your mother? Even better, how would you feel...

...Every year on September 11, the country mourns a terrible tragedy that happened in America. A tragedy that changed America forever and brought attention to the importance of the need for strong emergency services. America lost nearly 4,000 people that day and 400 of them were firefighters and police officers. They represented on that day what the definition of a hero is. A hero is somebody who puts their life before others, who shows bravery in time of trouble and who didn’t ask for recognition for their heroism. With two buildings going down and civilians still inside, the New York Firefighters and Police Officers put their lives on the line. Their responsibility was to make sure they could get as many people out as to the best of their ability. The Officers and Firefighters had to come to terms with the fact that their chances of getting out of this was not very high. Even though they could not save everyone, the emergency service tried to complete their job to the fullest. They were going to make sure as many people could get out of the building and be taken care of by the paramedics down below. Without their bravery and courageous acts many of the people that survived would...

...Affirmative Action Jackie Carter COM/220 May 18, 2011 Staci Weaver CheckPoint - Introduction and Conclusion Are affirmative action policies and programs still necessary in this day and age, even if it creates reverse discrimination? One of the country’s top debated issues is affirmative action. Affirmative Action came about when President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10925 that created the President’s Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity whose purpose was to ensure all employees are treated fairly, without regard to race, creed, color, or national origin (Elliott & Ewoh, 2000). Since its inception, Affirmative Action program and policies have taken on a life of their own. Affirmative action is a term that refers to mandatory and voluntary programs intended to affirm the civil rights of designated classes of individuals. Affirmative action or Executive Order 11246 (EO11246) was created, after the civil rights movement, by the federal courts to ensure companies were not using discriminatory hiring practices. Affirmative action is similar but different from equal opportunity. Equal opportunity is an attempt to avoid discrimination by applying the performance related criteria to all applicants, in other words, each individual should be given the same treatment as all other individuals. Unequal treatment of minority groups is considered discriminatory and illegal. This process ignores the past history of discrimination of an employer and also...

...one another extremely well. Andrew and I communicate with each other in our own way. An outsider looking in couldn’t even understand a conversation between the two of us at times. Anyone who knows either of us knows that if you’re hanging out with the two us you’re in for a day filled with laughs and acts of randomness. I have known Andrew for eight years now and I can confidently say he is one of a kind. He is a completely unpredictable person and I think that’s why I am so close with him. When thinking of the similarities between Andrew and myself, I think the fact that we enjoy each other’s company so much makes us as close as we are. We are two individuals, although we relate on many things, we aren’t the same person and have different views and thoughts on many subjects. When I got together with Andrew recently and began discussing family, the first topic of my Analytical Paper, Andrew replied, “I don’t have a family”. Now - 1 - before he gets the poor and abused label, this is the type of thing Andrew says on a daily basis. He’s not the type of kid to sit down and have a serious conversation with you right away. If you...

...he events of 9/11 were huge. The body of evidence that the administration, or other agencies within the US government, were involved is also huge. The problem with summarizing the information is that the scale of the operation and its cover-up are so vast. Finding smoking guns is like picking up litter on a field. It's hard to move in a straight line. That makes it hard to create a simple narrative. My personal questioning of the events of 9/11 began a few years later, when my sister went to a 9/11 conference and brought back books, DVDs, and enthusiasm. I watched the DVDs and became especially fascinated with one clip where the North Tower appeared to be literally erupting as it fell. One streamer caught my eye because I was able to follow its trajectory. I did some simple measurements right on the TV screen and estimated that the horizontal ejection velocity of that stream of debris was around 60 mi/hr. These ejections of material were from high in the building. How could heavy steel members be thrown sideways so fast when even the downward collapse had not picked up very much speed? This did not seem to me to be consistent with a purely gravitational collapse. I was hooked. I started using some video analysis tools I use in my teaching to analyze the motions of various ejecta and the buildings themselves. Several videos of the collapse of both towers show waves of horizontal mass ejections that race down the faces of the buildings, nearly keeping pace with material falling...

...privacy? As drones grow more popular, it becomes even easier to recognize that they could be used for things that might not be the best idea. For example, there have been multiple instances where drones have flown over women sunbathing on the beach and taken a few pictures without them knowing. I know I wouldn’t want that to happen to me! “The issue gets more serious when it comes to surveillance by authorities. The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom from “unreasonable searches and seizures” of Americans and their property. But advocates for civil liberties warn that police could use drones to follow your car, or be able to gather evidence against you without a warrant.” (Source #1) This gives a completely different view of things. Usually, the police are the ones that try and ensure your privacy, but in this case, it’s the other way around. People have noticed situations like this happening in real life, which makes the idea of having drones without regulations to keep people safe out of the question. Tell me, would you feel safe if you were being spied on by a drone? After all, every drone has to be controlled by a human in order for it to fly… Creeped out...

...Employee Retention Executive Leadership BY: Michael D. Jackson Assistant Fire Chief Department of the Air Force Mercury NV An applied research paper submitted to the National Fire Academy as part of the Executive Fire Officer Program March 1999 2 ABSTRACT Over the last five years (1993-1998), twenty-one members of the Range Complex Fire Department (RCFD) have left for various reasons. The problem is that because of a reduced personnel budget the department has not been allowed to replace all of the members that have left. The ensuing reduction in staffing has resulted in a fire station closure and a reduction in customer service. Operationally this reduction has resulted in increased response times, reductions of vehicle staffing and increases in overtime. The purpose of this paper was to identify why personnel were leaving the department and to suggest ways to improve employee retention. Descriptive and evaluative research methods were utilized to answer the following research questions: 1. 2. 3. Why have members left the Range Complex Fire Department? In general, why do employees leave the fire organizations they work for? What does the upper management team of the RCFD believe are the reasons personnel are leaving the department? 4. What retention programs are used by other federal fire departments? To identify why employees were leaving the RCFD nine interviews were conducted with former employees that had left the department in the last five years. A literature...

...Augustus Caesar Born Gaius Octavius, Augustus was born in September of 63 B.C. Octavius' father, Gaius Octavius, was a praetor for two years until he died in 58 B.C. Therefore, Octavius grew up without a father for most of his life. Through Octavius' long life of seventy-seventy years, he accomplished a great deal. He reduced the size of the Senate, he was an integral part of the second triumvirate, and he was elected the Pontifex Maximus, just to name a few of these accomplishments. Octavius received the name Augustus by holding the consulship and receiving various awards. This title was not given out to just anyone. In order to receive this title, one must be a large contributor to the city (Boardman 533-534). Octavius Caesar was related to the famous Julius Caesar through Octavius' mother. Atria was Octavius' grandmother and Julius Caesar's sister, therefore making Octavius his great-nephew. When Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 B.C., his will read that Octavius was to be adopted by him, making Octavius his son and heir to the Roman Empire. Also, in his will it stated that every citizen of Rome would receive a cash gift. Octavius rushed to Rome to take his throne, but when he arrived in Rome, he realized the Antony had already taken control of the city. He could not persuade Antony to release the money in Julius Caesar's treasury so he had to borrow all the money he could to give the gifts to the citizens. Julius Octavius Caesar was only eighteen when he was thrust...

...Criminal Law in Action Final Project: Arson Michigan v. Tyler, 436 U.S. 499 Arson: Michigan v. Tyler, 436 U.S. 499 Michigan v. Tyler was decided in 1978. This was the first arson case to go to the Supreme Court. Only a few defense attorneys read the case briefs which made the fire investigator’s job easier. Before this decision search warrant at a fire was unheard of. Loren Tyler and Robert Tompkins leased a furniture store, Tyler’s Action, in Oakland County, Michigan. On January 21st, 1970 the fire occurred before midnight. The fire department extinguished the fire and found two jugs containing flammable liquid. The arguments of the state was questions of when and to what extent of warrant is to be mandatory for post fire and by analogy other post disaster investigations and of which evidence is admissible against in particular arsonists who burn their own buildings. The case arises as out of facts which were the most part are typical of any arson for profit case with two small exceptions. In relating the facts and in attempting to justify, a warrant was post fire searches in general as well as the searches which occurred in particular in this case. Testimony of Oscar Frisch, a former employee of the respondents will prove that he helped move valuable items from the store and old furniture into the store a few days before the fire. He also related that the respondents had told him there would be a fire on January 21, and had instructed him to place mattresses...

It is the largest of 35 local municipalities within the County; has an estimated population of 404,048 people; and has a land area of 35 square miles (US Census Bureau, 2006). Miami employs 3,408 full-time positions and several hundred part-time positions (Miami, 2010, p.73). The City of Miami has three single-employer defined benefit pension plans: The City of Miami Firefighters’ and Police Officers’ Retirement Trust (FIPO); the City of Miami General Employees’ Retirement Trust (GESE); and the City of Miami Elected Officers’ Retirement Trust (EORT). With the exception of the EORT, participants in the FIPO and GESE pensions are required to contribute minimum percentages of their salaries. The City of Miami’s contributions are made from the city’s General Fund. (Miami, 2010, p.282) A single-employer defined benefit plan means that there is no portability of creditable service years for a retirement plan if one wanted to change employers and the pension payout of...
