...statements of cash flows? Blockbuster was reporting the cost of the buying DVDs in the investing part of the flow. However, after talking to the SEC they decided that these costs should be placed onto the operating cash flow. This had a large negative effect on their operating cash flows during the restatement periods 2. Read SFAS #95, paragraphs 24 and 85-87, and explain how this relates to Blockbuster. This is very similar to what the standard is referring to in paragraph 24. It is an asset that is rented out for a short period of time and then is sold when the movie become a little older. Paragraph 87 describes some of the situations in which classification is not totally clear. It says an item needs to be recognized based on the predominate source of cash flow. In this case the DVDs lead to rental revenue, which are part of the company’s operations. Read the article: “Quick Cash via Receivables Deals Can Leave a Blurry Fiscal Picture,” by Michael Rapoport, in Wall Street Journal, June 16, 2006, p. C3. 3. What “trick” can companies use to boost their operating cash flows, at least in the short run? Companies can securitize their accounts receivables. They bundle their receivables and then using an off-balance entity they sell these securities. The company will receive cash from these securities with the promise of paying back the investors when the customers pay the receivables. This allows them to increase operating cash flows and does not get...

...While in the initial session with Gladys I did not think that I was doing that great of a job. I felt as if I was having trouble making the conversation flow. I relied more heavily on the guide with the questions and while I was about to get a lot of information, it did mess my flow up some. I did not expand on things when I wanted to because I knew that it was going to come up later in questions that I would ask. After the session ended I did feel relieved that we got through it and I felt better seeing that I made the time because at times it felt like I was going quickly through the questions. After reviewing the session, I was pleased because the session did flow better than I thought it did. I also noticed that I said "umm" a lot during. I said it mainly when I was reacting to comments the client said and it was something that I wanted to...

...for a few minutes so that I could go over the details of the interview and answer any questions. I essentially explained the research itself, her role, and read the consent form out loud. She stated that she understood her rights in the interview and felt comfortable participating. When we finally met, I handed her the consent form and explained that we would each keep a copy, signed by both of us. After reading it over and signing, we began the interview. In the end, my actual interview turned out to be much more detailed than my interview guide, which is a really good sign of my informant’s knowledge of the subject. The guide was very helpful in reminding me what I needed to accomplish - I read it over a few times before conducting the interview so I would remember the key questions and not have to look down at the guide too much, which would break the conversational flow. It was important to me to ask every question, but I was not concerned about the order. Instead, I decided to start with the simpler, more broad questions and go deeper from there, leaving room for extra questions and tangents. This flow made for a very natural conversation. Prior to the interview, I considered showing my informant the guide so that she would know what kind of questions I was going to ask, but I ultimately decided against that because I didn’t want her to formulate any answers before I asked the questions. I believe that this ensured that I received honest and raw data. If I were to do another...

...Police are the gatekeepers of the CJS. They are the ones who find the people who are violating laws and arrest them based on their discretion and situation of the case. Since, the patrol officers are who start many of the cases that go to court. They are the ones that should be interviewed on whether or not the court system works, the court system has integrity and what would that specific officer do to change the court system. The first patrol officer that was interviewed was from the Mount Prospect police. When he was asked the first question on if he felt the court system worked, he paused and then smiled the word “yes”. He felt it did for the most part, as he felt most Americans did as well. He believed it all mattered on what side you might be on. He mostly found this question to be elementary and found himself confused, but he concluded it with determining it the best system in the world, but could use much improvement. The second question given to the officer was if he felt the court system had integrity. He thought that most people within the system do have integrity. However, he...

...What are the issues facing law enforcement today? That is a good question, but not one I think is best suited for a initial hire interview. Think about it, what power does a probationary officer have within the department to solve any "problems" facing law enforcement? I know what they are looking for in asking the question, but there are better ways to illicit a response on those topics. As to the question, perhaps the largest issue I see in LE is: Communication. Great answer to the board question, hit them back with such a broad response to a generic question. Communication has been, and will always be a large issue in LE. Its not just communication between dispatch and officers or officers and the public, but between all levels in the chain of command. Between departments within the agency, between agencies and other levels of government. We tend to play our game too close to our chest, though with good reason sometimes. We really need to work on our flow of information and resources. How do these issues coincide with those of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)? DHS must improve communication between law enforcement agencies in order to accomplish its mission because many threats and suspicious activity will be observed first, and possibly only, by cops on the street. DHS must remain vigilant that its surveillance authority is cautiously used to prevent or detect terrorism and violent crimes. DHS should keep its focus on crimes, drug or otherwise, that directly...

...improvement in our processes 3. Increase our market share. Measures and Metrics to Track CSF Data There should be measurements put in place to monitor and track progress. ...the values of: Effectiveness, Integrity, Simplicity, Structure, and Trust. So the selection system for an interviewer would obviously be to ascertain from a system of questions, if they align with the values of the Zara business model. First order of business in selection of a new-hire is to review their resumes and make sure that they have the basic set of skills to perform the functions of the job being applied for. I also like to take a look at their length of employment with an organization, and if they skip around from job to job alot. I offer that as a general statement being that it is, in practice, a part of the overall process. Additionally, I agree with her suggestion of selling the job. I think that it gets the juices flowing within the applicant’s head as to what they will be involving themselves in. If they are excited about what they hear then it is viable that this will reveal itself in the interview process. Conversely, if they realize they don’t really want this type of position, then they will reveal their disinterest during the interview. In Ms. Quinn's book "Don't hire without me" she stresses that the true benefit of interviewing is when you can get useful and actionable information about the applicant so that you can make a more informed decision. So I would first develop questions that will help define the applicants "Locus of control". Compiling a list of responses throughout the entire interview process would assess the Locus of control. If...
