In what ways, might engaging in pretend play in early childhood be beneficial for a child’s development?

Play can be hard to define due to the diverse understanding within different cultures and social norms. To play, is a child to interacting with the environment both mentally and physically. Per Smilanksy (1968) there are four developmental stages of play that a child progresses through. Functional play is exploring through movement using self and objects, learning about cause and effect. Construction play is the next stage in which a child gets creative and builds things, manipulating and experimenting with the environment around them. Dramatic play then follows suit; a child will pretend to be a doctor while role playing and inventing …show more content…

It is suggested that a child develops their ability for abstract thought through pretend play and social learning comes before cognitive development. This is in line with the nurture side of the great nature vs nurture debate within psychology. One such study by McAloney, K., Stagnitti, K. (2006) investigated pretend play and a Childs social competence. Within socia-dramatic play a child can practice and experiment with social skills, social opportunities and consequences. Giving a child an opportunity to practice different coping mechanisms in a safe and artificial environment and too evaluate and assess oneself. Social competency is having the skills to engage and respond to others in a way that is deemed acceptable in relation to social rules and norms. This research used fifty-three participants from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Children were observed and assessed using the Child-Initiand Pretend Play assessment and play with others was assessed using the Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale (PIPPS), this was completed by preschool teachers and parents. The results showed that the more imaginative a Childs play the more social they were with others. This study supports other research that has found, children who engage in a higher level of imaginative play are more socially competent. It would suggest that a Childs social development therefore would benefit from pretend play. The results can be used in everyday life to show play specialist that working with children and their pretend play skills can help with their social competence. However, this research used children from one country and therefore cannot account for differences across cultures. Parents having input into the Childs PIPPS assessment could mean a biased view and the parents saying what they thought was right not what was true

...Theater Today Matthew King How to See a Play 6/4/07 Fusion I have to say that overall I really enjoyed Performance Fusion. The physical theater was small, but much larger than the last show that we saw at Impact. After our first tour of the small theater, I didn’t know what to expect of a play there. My first impression of the small theater was that it was very bare, dark and small, so it was interesting to see the stage with sets and actors illuminated by the lights. Since the theater was small, the actors were easy to see. I also want to comment on the sound. I thought the acoustics in this theater were just mediocre. Although the theater is small and about the same size as the Ashby Stage, the actors were a bit more difficult to hear, although the microphones did help quite a bit. I thought most of the performances were great; however I enjoyed some of them better than others. My favorites were The Boogeyman, Rhythms in the Veins, and Playwriting 101: The Rooftop Lesson. I really enjoyed the way Boogeyman began. First off, the play opened with the heavy sounds of hard rock/metal band Godsmack, and then followed by a scary story by from the older brother to his little brother Timmy. During his scary story, I really liked the effect that the flashlight gave along with the strobe flashes that simulated lightning. I also liked the sound effects that were used in the play.
