What really is the gender wage gap? Is the gender wage gap something feminists should be protesting? Feminists have been around since the Seneca Falls Convention on July 19th, 1848. At Seneca Falls they fought for their right to vote, now they fight for equal pay. So, what is the simple explanation of the gender wage gap? The gender wage gap is easy to understand if you break it down into words; gender= female or male and in this case female vs. male, wage= a fixed regular payment and in this case the amount of money one gets, and finally gap= difference or a break or hole in something. If you put it all together it makes the difference between male and female salaries. So, why are feminists protesting something that they have no control over? …show more content…
The difference between men and women's work ethics comes down to one simple thing, children. Women already have to take maternity leave when pregnant and by the time they return they are very behind on everything and are exhausted by their new baby so they usually take some unpaid time off to be with their kid. While men usually go off to work and take care of the kid at night. When the kids get older they go to school but when they get sick, most kids want their mom as the mom is more compassionate than the dad. Jobs don't discredit women by just paying them less, they make more subtle moves by paying people with solid non-flexible hours more which tends to lean towards the less involved parent (which more often than not is the woman). Another thing is where you work. People who work from home can work and watch their kids, while as people who go to an office have to leave their kids. Another contributor is pay secrecy. Pay secrecy is when you sign a contract not to talk about your pay with colleagues. This causes women to not know if they are being underpaid.
