...Today in our society it seems as though abuse has become something that everyone knows goes on behind closed doors, yet no one does anything to keep it from happening. As citizens in this society, as we witnesses these crimes, it is our duty to put an end to it. And also to help protect the children in our society that are incapable of protecting themselves. Statistics done by the Children’s Bureau show that 9.3% of children that are recorded as abused are children with disabilities. These children that are unable to defend themselves are the ones that are being abused. The disabilities that these victims suffer from are behavioral, emotional, learning, intellectual, physical, visual, and hearing. Can you imagine being verbally or emotionally abused with out being able to see who is doing that to you. Or being physically disabled and being physically abused without being able to run away from it. During one of the survey’s done by the Bureau, it showed that 41 out 50 states having reported that most of their children that were abused, were disabled. But what can we do to change this. There are many options as to help prevent this from occurring in the lives of children today and in the future. One of those options is to start a parenting class for parents that give birth to a child with a disability. Help educate them on the disability and the risks of abuse. The Oregon Alliance for Kids With Special Needs (OAKS) had developed a program to protect children with disabilities...

...“Me! I never brought her up at all, except give her a lick of scrap now and again.” Later I thought it ironic that instead of Alfred providing for his daughter, yet he wanted Higgins to give him his “nights” as a father. Alfred and Eliza’s relationship is based on what he can benefit from her. He goes to the extent of making arrangements for Mr. Higgins to keep her for money. To add to this he gave Mr. Higgins permission to punish Eliza in a violent way if she was to get out of hand. Professor Higgins, the man who was successful in the art of English language, was indeed the man that abused Eliza the most. From their first encounter he describes Eliza as a creature “with her kerbstone English.” In my belief that was a foreshadow of the verbal abuse yet to...

...organizations are developing flatter, leaner structures that support a more empowered, team-based workforce. The nature of leadership has also changed significantly over time. Building on the body of work that has been done to understand leadership, the current paper explores the various theories of leadership and how these theories have changed over time. Starting with a review of work done on leadership, the trends and changes over time are discussed. In addition, characteristics of successful leaders are identified. Given current developments in organizations, a call for change is presented in the context of teams and team leadership. A modified view of leadership is proposed that may be more appropriate in team-based structures. such as verbal approval, praise, and encouragement. It is important for managers to have a clear set of behaviors that will gain the reward. Coercive power is on the other end of the spectrum in comparison to reward power. This power is used as a way to punish an employee in order to get the desired behavior. Employees usually do what is required of them out of fear of what may happen if they do not comply. Managers may withhold pay raises and promotions or verbally abuse employees. Legitimate power is the authority that a leader has due to their position in an organization. A leader is only different from a follower because they have more responsibility then the follower. Referent power happens when the followers look at the leader as someone who has...

...As a Human Resource Manager I would provide Bob Wilson of Wilson Brother’s Limited with the following information around stereotyping in the organization. Stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice are similar concepts that are grouped together however each have their own specific characteristics and meanings. Stereotypes are regarded as the most cognitive component and often occurs without conscious awareness, whereas prejudice is the affective component of stereotyping and discrimination is one of the behavioral components of prejudicial reactions (Wikipedia). The textbook definition of stereotyping is the process of assigning traits to people based on their membership in a social category. Stereotypes tend to be mutual beliefs across society and even several cultures instead of the shared philosophies differing from one person to the next. (McShane, Steen and Tasa p. 65). People are often oblivious to their own stereotypical opinions and engross in such sentiments for three common reasons. First, is that it simplifies our understanding of the world, second is that we have an inherent need to understand and anticipate how others will behave and third, it is motivated by the individuals own social identity (McShane et al., p. 66). Stereotyping has both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include (as outlined in the website article Pros and Cons of Stereotyping): • It is a simple way of organizing and remembering information about other people • It reduces the amount...

...Bullying- I think that bullying is best defined by saying: a unsecure person looking and prying on someone that they see they can take advantage of either physically or mentally. I think the physical part is mostly in young adults and children. I think the mental bullying come into place in the work place and a lot in relationships. I think it is important to define the word bulling accurately because there are several types of bulling. It could be physical.it could be mental. It could also be verbally. The reason I say verbal and mental is because verbal you could call someone names and etc... Mentally you could play with someone’s mind by placing thoughts of threats and losses. I think in the two article the same problem was punishment. Who should get punished and should there be a standard for bulling. I think that this is a problem due to fact that there are different types of bulling it is hard to set a standard when at most times we are talking about children and who is to say if they are aware of the severity of being a bully. I think this affects the victim mostly because they never get justice. I think it’s hard to make right are take back the effects of being on the receiving end of being bullied. I don’t think that my definition of bulling has changed after reading the articles. I think that it was reinforced by both of the articles because they was on two different topics but surrounding the main subject knowns as...

...of Horizontal Violence In nursing, there is a growing concern called, horizontal violence. Horizontal violence is an act of aggression from one nurse to the other. Horizontal violence impedes teamwork, hinders patient care and causes a negative work environment (Becher & visovsky, 2012). Even though workplace politics exists in every profession, the effects of horizontal violence, or bullying, in nursing is a costly behavior. Nurses feel devalued in the workplace and experience psychological effects. Patients are likely to experience less favorable outcomes, and retention is difficult costing facilities large amounts of money to recruit and hire replacements. Types of violence Horizontal violence is physical and or verbal behavior that is believed by the recipient, to be degrading, threatening and considered inappropriate (Bartholomew, 2014). According to Doyle (2001), there are several ways to undermine one's dignity in the workplace. This list includes: humiliating and intimidating the victim, verbally assaulting, and implying threats. Intruding on co-workers, and stalking the targeted person, is another form of horizontal violence. Moreover, repeatedly imposing deadlines and tasks that are unfavorable or impossible is also considered as a form of workplace bullying. Dellasega (2009), states that the participants, willing or not, of horizontal violence, are divided into three roles. The first role is the perpetrator, the nurse or nurses responsible...

... we try to look for ways to get through them. Some may be smart, and some may be not. The three most common issues among teenagers that I will be discussing in this essay are drug use, bullying, and self-harm. Illegal or legal drug use can be seen anywhere, even in school. Peer pressure and low self-esteem can be the cause of many teens looking at drugs for many reasons. Drugs are serious substances that can harm the users and anyone around them. Drug use can lead to drug abuse, and will lead to a much more serious problem- addiction. Using drugs is a way for teens to escape from their reality for a while so they can feel a little better. There are many teenagers that have been bullied or are being bullied. Bullying can be physical or verbal and can inflict significant damage on many. Along with the advanced technology, bullying can be done anonymously and make things even worse. Because of bullying, the suicide rating among teens has increased and has resulted in many to drop out of school. Most victims of bullying turn to drugs and self-harm than to an adult to talk about it because they feel alone and that no one would be able to understand. Self-harm is a way of expressing and dealing with emotional distress. Some teens can hide their cuts and lie about how they are feeling, but deep down they are dying. Teens self-harm to distract themselves from the pain they are feeling inside. As illogical as it may sound to others, self-harming can be soothing. Self-harm can relieve...

...Gerund and Infinitive Phrases Gerunds and Infinitives are both verbals. A verbal is a word formed from a verb but functioning as a different part of speech, usually a noun. Gerunds are formed when an “-ing” ending is added to a verb, and every infinitive is composed of “to” plus a verb. When grouped with modifiers, gerunds and infinitives form verbal phrases that perform the function of nouns. Using Gerunds in a Sentence In the examples below, the gerund appears in italics and the main verb appears in bold. Gerund as subject Because gerunds act as nouns, they can take any role that a noun would usually take in a sentence. The most obvious role is the gerund as subject, in which the sentence is about an action: Ex. Waking up early is always difficult. Waking up early is the gerund phrase that forms the subject of the main verb is. Gerund as a direct object A gerund or gerund phrase can also be the object of a verb, making it the recipient of an action Ex. Usually, my problem is staying up too late. ...Case Study 1 1. In this situation I believe that it would be appropriate if the front desk agent had the manager complete the checkout for this customer. In this case the first desk agent is receiving a lot of verbal abuse from the customer, which upset her but she did not want to show it. If the manager completed the checkout he or she could have relaxed the customer because a manager is in a position of authority and wants everything to run smoothly in their hotel. 2. I would have handled the situation in the same manner as this front desk agent. Obviously this customer was frustrated that he was late for his flight. The front desk agent did nothing wrong while she was getting verbally abused by this grumpy customer and I believe I would have done the same if I was put into her position. 3. What I would have done differently was in the beginning when the agent asked for the customers last name I would have had him spell it out the first time if I did not hear him clearly. Also since I knew that the man was clearly in a rush I would have not told him to go to the business center to make his photo copies and then fax his papers. I would have done it for him right there to help speed things up for him. Case Study 2 1. If I was in Jill’s situation I would first contact the incoming guests before they arrived to see if they were still intending on staying at the hotel. If not then she could start to put guests in the split suites and parlors. In this situation the manager wants...
