Growing up can be a very difficult road for anyone. As a child back in elementary school, the social challenges I faced were difficult, but they helped me to develop skills I needed to become successful both socially and academically. Back then, I had trouble keeping friends, and was often isolated from others. At home, I spent most of my time in front of the television. However, things began to change in the third grade. While doing a project on space, I fell in love with the study of the planets in the solar system. After that, I fell in love with the school library and went there every day to read. The library ran out of space-themed books for me to read in the fourth grade and I turned my attention to history. In fifth grade, I had an opportunity to join “Library Club,” a club to help out the librarian with the organization of the library. This became my escape from uncomfortable social situations, and my first volunteer work. By this point, I was a very studious person, so I decided to focus more on improving my social skills and become more social. It was in middle school where I fully realized my problems in elementary school and how scared I was. I realized I shouldn’t be polite and kind just for manners, but that I should always be caring and loving to everyone I meet, no matter how much they may hate me or are viewed negatively themselves. However, as I began my plan to catch up to everyone socially, I began to see the aspects of maturity that I lacked. The biggest hindrance was shyness. Shyness kept me away from many people during my time in middle school, but the people I did get to know taught me how to really let loose and have fun.
