...Kelsey COMM 200: Gateway to Communication Studies November 20, 13 Review of Literature: The Rhetoric of Harry Potter Every so often there are stories that take the world by storm and make such an impact that they become part of our everyday world. (Czubek et al. 442) Jk Rowling’s Potter book series is by far one of the most loved series by adults and children for over sixteen years. First published in 1997, the world has fallen in love with Harry Potter and the magical world that he saved from destruction several times over. For me, growing up and being forced to read was always a problem until my father bought me the first book and I have been hooked ever since. A proud owner of all the books in hardback, audio books and all the movies, some would say I’m a bit of a Harry Potter nerd. For me, Harry Potter has become an everyday part of my world. In this review of rhetoric, three main components will be examined. The will be the examination of identities. Secondly, an examination of the commodity culture in the Potter books. Lastly, Christian undertones will be looked at. Identity Harry spent 11 years of his life not knowing who he was or where he belonged. He thought he belonged to his horrible Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. Todd A. Czubek and Janey Greenwald have written an article that explains the parallels between Harry Potter and the Deaf world. Using a “deaf lens” we can gain insight into social arrangements in the same way that fields...

...Today, as we live in a technology, business and consumerism world, advertising surrounds us everywhere wherever you go. You just can’t hide from it whatever you do – it will find you, trough television, internet, newspapers, magazines, outside and inside, on packages and so on. If one seize to exist, another, more modern and successful will reappear that will have more chances to reach you. In reality, people tend to hide from most advertisements and in most cases find it irritating, but it still exists and thrives more than ever. Why is it so? Why does advertisements doesn’t care and persists of putting the ideas in our sub consciousness that we need a new, better life with a bigger television, hair shining shampoo and the newest model of Lexus? In general, where did advertising came from and why? The word advertising comes from Latin language with its original meaning being "to turn toward.“ Sociologists and psychologists believe that advertising is a cultural thing. It is believed that first advertisements were created in Egypt 2 thousand years before BC. Then advertising was only notes on clay, wooden or metal tablets which offered information about what profession was of the shop keeper or what goods did he sell. Others believe that this still wasn‘t advertising, and that true advertising began when separate job roles and trade of goods were established. It was stated, that the value of advertising grew the most when in trades middlemen started to take action. They were...

...the twilight series, trendy fashion, reality TV and celebrity obsession are pop culture. No matter how much you say you don’t follow pop culture it is still a active presense in your life. It reaches all audiences of life as long as they are a part of society. Three major trends that are popular in America today are among those mentioned above. The iPod is in everyone’s pocket these days. It has become more of a pocket pc and less of a music device. You can get the latest news, social networking updates and email all on the iPod. Reality TV is also popular in America. Americans enjoy watching “real” people deal with the drama in their everyday lives. Jersey Shore is a (arguably) popular reality series. The Twilight series, much like the Harry Potter series 10 years ago, has taken American youth by storm. In pop culture trends you either love it or hate it, with majority of the people loving it. Popular culture affects the clothes I wear, the things I watch on TV, and the music I listen to. Now that I think about it, popular...

...Although of The Twilight Saga books are fictional with a mystical story line; these books will be remember for many years. The Twilight Saga has become so surprisingly popluar in the past two to three years. Reminding all of us of the Harry Potter novels. Though both groups of books targeted different age groups; the overwhelming popularity reached out to all age groups. Including children, teenagers, young adults, and grown adults. I look back to my childhood, and the books that were popular then were part of the bubble gum culture of the 1980's. When my children are adults, they will remember the Twilight Saga, and even Harry Potter. Then relate those types of books to their childhood. Which does a have different type of culture. I call it the fantasy and reality culture. I am positive there is a more specific name for it, but in my mind everything in today's media culture is either reality based, or fantasy based. Yes both are far from each other, but when one does not want to live reality, they are most likely to chose fantasy. I think that is why Twilight Saga and Harry Potter books have become so vastly popular. The only issues I can see coming from the fantasy part is the need for children to know how to decipher the difference between reality and fantasy. If this is not done, then there could possibly be all different types of issues for the children readers when they become...

...(A.1) Referral selling is when a consumer is persuaded to purchase goods or services by promising a rebate, commission or other benefit for supplying information that helps the trader sell to other consumers. The consumer does not get the promised benefits unless the supplied information is fulfilled. For example a salesman for a telephone company persuades you to sign up to a contract for a mobile phone plan and says that you will receive a commission for introducing the product to other customers who buy the same product. (A.2) Unconscionable conduct is when the consequences of a contract is unfair and harsh. Where one party is in a position to exploit a particular weakness of the other; either a business to business contract or a business to consumer contract. For example if a real estate agent drew up a lease agreement for a mentally deficient man and the contents in that contract exploited the lessor because of his condition. The contract for example would include things such as obligating the lessor to replace fixtures of the property even though the damage was not at fault of the lessor it was general fair wear and tear. The lessee exploited the fact that the lessor did not fully understand the laws regarding to the landlord’s obligation to replace fixtures of his property if the fixture is not fit for its use due to wear and tear. (A.3) i) A compliance program is designed to identify and reduce the risk of breaching the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and...

...The Popularization of Harry Potter Series The Harry Potter series, which is written by JK Rowling, is a miracle of literary history that it is well known in countries with various cultural backgrounds all over the world. It has been translated into seventy languages and sold over four hundred million copies in two hundred countries. The success of the Harry Potter series results in a success of its industry, including films, video games, toys, traveling attractions and theme parks. The Chronicles of Narnia is another popular fantasy storybook published in 1950. But why did it fail to achieve the same incredible success as the Harry Potter series? Part of the reason is because the Harry Potter series is not only a book for children but also a book for adults. The details of the books connect to younger readers’ real lives, while being inspirational enough to generate older readers’ considerations. It is far more than just a fantasy series. Harry Potter’s magic world is so real to readers because it is very similar to readers’ lives. There are governments, schools, pubs, banks, bookstores, train stations, the World Cup, prisons and hospitals in Harry Potter’s magic world. These are all things young readers can relate to in their lives. The similarity makes Harry Potter’s magic world real to readers. Besides, by offering detailed examples to connect her characters with readers, JK.Rowling successfully convinces her readers that the magic world is real and they can be part of it if...

...reader, mainly a child, to read quickly, and develop a clear understanding of exactly what is happening in the novel or story. During this essay, I am going to consider Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban of the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling, and Peter and Wendy of the Peter Pan series by J.M Barrie Any book in the Harry Potter series may be the perfect choice for such an essay due to the fact they are all unbelievably popular with readers of all ages. “As of June 2011, the book series has sold about 450 million copies, making it the best-selling book series in history, and has been translated into 67 languages.” As Harry Potter himself is the same age as the target audience, it allows the children reading the story to relate to him, and wish and wonder what it would be like to be like Harry Potter, and overcome the challenges that he has to in his wizarding world. In my experience, books within the genre of children’s literature are often very descriptive, for example “A dementor rose slowly from the box, its hooded face turned toward Harry, one glistening, scabbed hand gripping its cloak.” This excessive description is done in order to let the child let their imagination run wild whilst they are reading the story and imagine what various things look like. I for one after reading the Harry Potter...

...Minister would love to ride on a bicycle in a city where traffic congestion is no more a daily topic but a Chinese super glue sticking cheaply with the urban life. The two wheeler moving its way through the traffic like solving a jig-saw puzzle is what produces a greater than normal exhalation by the passerby. Yes, for the guys and the minority girls- the most time consuming transport in Dhaka city would be bicycle after motorbikes which is now the ‘buzz’ of the city. Why do u need a BOOM BOOM GO? Apart from impressing the girl next door with the bicycle, the thrill is the most important feeling that goes through every rider’s spine everyday. Living in a huddled city where parking a car is like telling Hagrid to share the sit with Harry potter in a rickshaw, bicycle can easily solve the problem with easy parking. Bike also reflects the personality and status of a rider, which often can connects with the individuality. Moreover, nowadays bicyclists often feel like they belong to a big community, and that sensation gives something in common that the bicyclists share a bond that sets us apart from the rest of the two-wheeler world. As for instance BDCYCLIST and Mojammel Vai- the new Gp Advertisement says it all. The ease of commute is so evident that even a school going student shows frustration like Ussain Bolt showing frustration while disqualified for 100m race in this Olympic when a bicycle whooshes past the jam. Escaping and adventure is what the most common byproduct...

...who wouldn’t spare a single life, that old character has been redefined and molded innumerous number of times to appeal the current generation audience, the current vampires sparkle and get married. The biggest part of the fantasy genre of films in my life would clearly be imagination and hope. A lot of these movies gave me the mental strength to always wait for the good things to happen when hard times were wandering upon me. A lot of people become actively imaginative and creative with their thinking. But the real reason this genre stands out than any other would be the part where everything non-existent or everything that we wished existed can be brought to life on a screen. One of the biggest films series like Lord of the rings, Harry Potter, Marvel Superheroes, and Twilight etc., all have used the...

...Name: Eslam Eid Essay Teacher: Mrs. Harp English: 9-5 Date: 6th Dec, 09 In J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the chambers of secrets, the author establishes ghosts as characters with feeling through the dialogue, action, and thought of Moaning Myrtle. Myrtle always haunts the girl’s bathroom when she gets angry by flooding the toilets. ‘Hermione said,’ “ Yes. It’s been out of order all year because she keeps having tantrums and flooding the place.”(133) Myrtle shows us that she always haunts the girl’s bathroom when she gets angry. Myrtle always cry when people start talking about her in a mean way, for example some people call her fat Myrtle or ugly Myrtle. ‘Hermione said,’ “Oh, no, peeves, don’t tell her what I said, she ‘ll be really upset.”(134) This quote proves that Myrtle always cry every time somebody talks about her in a mean way. Anytime somebody upsets Myrtle, she goes to the bathroom and tries to kill herself, but then she realized that she is already dead. ‘Myrtle said,’ “Peeves upset me so much I came in here and tried to kill myself. Then of course, I remembered that I’m... I’m...”(156) this quote shows us that Myrtle is always sad, that when she tried to kill herself in the bathroom she realized that she is already dead. So in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, the author establishes ghosts as characters with feelings through the dialogue, action, and thought of Moaning Myrtle. Myrtle...

...New Jersey. Emma Watson would be a great candidate because she fully embodies those traits and they are evident in her personal life along with her work as an actress. Having a spokesperson who values getting education such as Emma Watson would be a perfect match for TCNJ because it is a very reliable institution when it comes to academics. Also, it has the reputation of holding its students to very high standards. Before moving to United States Watson attended and excelled at an independent preparatory school in Oxford, England. From there she enrolled at the American Ivy School, Brown University. Although some might argue that Watson is just another college dropout movie star because she left Brown University to finish filming the Harry Potter series. However, after filming was over she returned to Brown and graduated. In an interview with Vogue magazine when asked about her education she responded by saying, “I’ve been fighting so hard to have an education…” (Foreman). It is evident through her efforts to finish college and her success as a student that education is very important to her. Because the students that apply to TCNJ care deeply about their education it is important that the spokesperson value it as well. Emma Watson feels...

...like news article or academic essay. If you ask how to write creatively, I would say inspiration can basis from anywhere, anything and anyone. Yet, it is not purely about thinking ‘outside of the box’ and writing something exciting. Creative writing is a style of writing mostly appears in feature stories, both fiction and non-fiction work. Writers need to generate their expression, maybe a viewpoint, an analysis and a story, from their inner-person meaning by their self of feelings, emotion, thoughts, opinion, imagination and even life experiences. It is a freedom writing, however, all should be a very original composition. Take an instance of our British leading fantasy novelist J.K.Rowling and her creativity of ‘Harry Potter’ series. The character Harry Potter is her sudden inspiration in 1990, when she was on the train to London, suddenly came up an idea to write a story of a little boy gets into a wizard school for study. It looks seems a children’s novel, while behind the wizards and magic adventures, there is deep moral fable, full of struggling between good and evil, life and death, right and wrong, love and hate, and that’s reflects Rowling’s life spiritual pathway and even her ideal of heroic characters. Other than fiction story, creative writing includes variety of its genres. It broadly uses in creative industry in order to express in kinds of format diversely. Sometimes it can be used persuasively, such as journal, article, invitation and presentation; while sometimes...

...A modern hero like Harry Potter, from the Harry Potter series, and an Anglo- Saxon hero like Beowulf, from Beowulf, are fairly similar, yet are completely different. These heroes have different motives, these two heroes are set in different times. Harry Potter was set in the nineties and Beowulf in the eighth century. Having different time settings makes the motives of the heroes different. Harry Potter’s reasoning to do things is based out of love. Love is a big part of his life even though his parents, his godfather and his mentor died he is still able to love. Without love he wouldn’t be alive, he would have died an infant. Harry relies on love to trust in his friends to help him in his battles. Beowulf never really had anything close to family, so he did not have anything equivalent to love. Which made him have different motives. That were simply fighting in favor of his king. His battles were never for personal reasons because he did not have an emotional attachment to anything. For example, when he went to go fight Grendel it was because he owed him a favor not because the battle was centered around him. Beowulf is very self-confident. When he was waiting in the hall he said that “Grendel is no braver, no stronger than I am! I could kill him with my sword; I shall not, easy as it would be.” (Raffel 44). Beowulf claims that he can defeat a demonic monster that was spawned by Cain and that it would be too easy a fight if he used a sword. Harry Potter on the other hand is...

...Asbjørn Møller 3.u - Grenaa Gymnasium DATE \@ "d. MMM y" 21. nov. 2014 Opgave B Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event The text ‘Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event, are the words spoken by the United States’ President Barack Obama. The Speech was given in 2009 at Wakefield High School in Virginia. It works as a motivational speech for every single American who will be starting his school after that years''s school holiday. As President Barack Obama is speaking for the schools all over America, he’s using very direct speech, with a lack of metaphors, as it would probably do more harm than good. “So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back to school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you.”(P. 7, l. 17) It’s important to keep in mind, that Obama is speaking to pupils from smaller grades. Actually pupils who just started school or kindergarten. Therefore it needs to be simple, so it’s possible for everybody to understand. When a president suddenly shows his face on the TV screen of every school in the country, that president has to do an effort to be taken seriously. And to show the viewers that he can be trusted. He does that in various ways: “Hello everyone - how’s everybody doing today?” (p. 7, l. 1), in this example he’s speaking as if he was talking directly to the listener. This creates Ethos, as he’s appealing to the moral...
