HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 CULTURAL

Using demographic data for your local community or region:

1) Which major ethnic and religious groups are represented in the community in which you live? 20 points

According to the 2010 census, Wichita, Kansas a city with 400,000 people has grown by 11.1 percent in the last 10 years. Hispanic residents have overtaken non-Hispanic black residents as the largest minority group in the past 10 years, followed by African-Americans then non-Hispanic whites. Majority of Hispanic and Latinos are Roman Catholics with a few who are Protestants. Prayer and family are very important to this community in addition to herbal medicines for treatment of common illnesses.

2) Describe the culture and nationality of the surrounding population. 20 points

The ethnic terms Latino or Hispanic refer to a diverse population of Latin American descent that includes many nationalities and races. Latino refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. (cdc.gov). Many Latinos are accustomed to self-treating due to the availability of pharmaceuticals without prescription in their home countries. Obstacles such as illegal immigration statuses contribute to the fear of seeking healthcare.

3) What resources are available to meet their health care needs? 20 points

The City of Wichita has numerous healthcare clinics that serve the uninsured and low income population for a very small fee depending on your income. Most of these clinics have staff fluent in other languages other than English to overcome language barrier that most minority groups face when seeking health care services. Churches around the city organize fundraisers throughout the year and donate proceedings to the free clinics that serve the community. The hospital that I work at as well as other hospitals in the city of Wichita, donate unused medical supplies as well as medications

4) What mechanisms are in place to facilitate access to these services by these groups?

There are also various health fairs throughout the year that target major health issues such as diabetes, heart health and women’s health with the help of healthcare volunteers from the few major hospitals in town such as Via Christi hospitals, Wesley healthcare and Kansas heart Hospitals. My nursing colleagues and other staff at my hospital volunteer throughout the year at Jefferson Elementary school which is located in one of the underserved neighborhoods of Wichita by providing flu shots, shoe and youth wellness education throughout the year as part of our volunteer program.

5) On the basis of the Healthy People 2020 objectives, develop a health education program that uses cultural interventions to promote positive health behaviors for the group.20 points

Hispanics and Latino-Americans are at a higher risk for developing hearth disease such as hypertension and diabetes due to their nutrient rich diets. It important for the educational program to be in Spanish as most of this population only speaks moderate English. It should also be at comfortable place such as churches and community centers for this population as they would feel more comfortable. Educators should remain culture conscious and allow for adequate time for questions and concerns. Printed educational materials and pamphlets to take home for future reference is also a plus.

...overall health status Equality in Access to health services is one of the forty two topic areas in Healthy People 2020 that caught my view as one of the objectives to have the highest importance in achieving a national goal of healthy Americans in the future. But what does access to health care actually means? According Gulliford et al (2002), facilitating access to health is concerned with helping people to command appropriate health care resources in order to preserve or improve their health status but unfortunately gaining access to healthcare depends on some factors such as financial, organizational and social or cultural barriers that permits or limit the said utilization of services. Therefore having much available health services is not a factor in itself to improve the quality of healthcare but the utilization of such services by all of the people which will depend on affordability and general accessibility of the service. According to Healthy People 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012), it is important to have access to quality health care service in order to achieve equity in health and eventually improve the general health status of all Americans. This I think is one of the most important move that the state should make in order to make the vision of having healthy Americans, including all migrants, ethnic and minority groups, by the year 2020. Though free service is not always the key to have access to quality healthcare the state can definitely...

I chose this goal because I believe that social and physical environments can play a vital role in helping people live healthy lifestyles. I believe that this is evident in day to day life, from having a ‘gym buddy’ to posting how far you ran on a social media network, we all want to have our peers support us in our healthy living. Having a social support as well as a physical environment that promotes healthy living can be the catalyst to a future generation accepting good health as the norm. Looking further...

...PLANNING BETTER HEALTH FOR THE FUTURE Margaret Carriger Grand Canyon University Trends and Issues in Health Care HLT-418v Georgeana Lass Drew, Instructor July 12, 2014 In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be affected. In reading the 42 topics, and after much consideration, I chose the 10 most important that I felt would be impacted. 1. Access to Health Services- The need for accessible health care is vital for the success of health equality and for expanding the well-being of a healthier life for Americans. 2. Cancer- Research and advancements in cancer treatment have seen a decrease in both occurrence and morbidity. Healthy People 2020 advocate the development in cancer research to assess the advances made in decreasing cancer in the United States. 3. Diabetes- One of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the United States. More than 57 million Americans have a high glucose reading or levels that can increase the chances of Diabetes Mellitus...

...The topic i'm choosing is the Healthy People 2020 goal for the pediatric nurses. I chose this topic since I am a pediatric nurse, I feel that I am in a great position to help parents and their kids prevent illnesses and be prepared for expected changes. The Healthy People 2020 have set goals for adolescents which are defined by the ages 10-19 years of age (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012) and for early and middle childhood. The Healthy People goals are made to improve priorities and increase public awareness of determinants of health, disease, and disability; providing measurable goals and objectives to determine progress in attaining the health improvement priorities; engaging multiple sectors to improve practices based on evidence and knowledge; and identifying critical research, evaluation, and data collection (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). 11 objectives are set for adolescents this year. The objective that grabbed my interest was increasing the percentage of adolescents who have had wellness checks from 68.7% to 75.6% (Meadows-Oliver and Allen, 2012). That objective grabbed my interest because I feel like I can personally help meet that goal by educating my adolescent patients and their parents to receive a yearly check up with their doctor. The goals made for early and middle childhood is to increase the proportion of children who are ready for school in all five domains of healthy development: physical development, social-emotional development, approaches to learning...

...Healthy People 2020: Handwashing After reviewing the Healthy People 2020 website, I decided to teach a group of four-year-old preschooler’s proper hand washing for my teaching plan. To meet this need several health-teaching projects have been developed to educate the preschoolers on how to better care for themselves. This teaching plan would fit into the category of disease prevention and health promotion. According to Bastable (2010), health promotion focuses on increasing wellness through approach behaviors, such as hand washing, rather than avoidance behaviors. Also, hand washing is one of the most important and effective ways to reduce the spread of germs and decrease the risk of illness and disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). The most effective method for preventing transmission is hand washing. Participants will be taught the step-by-step instructions on how to properly wash their hands, and when they should wash their hands. Before eating, when preparing food, after shaking hands, after going to the bathroom and after coughing or sneezing will be emphasized as important times to wash hands. The most difficult part of creating this teaching plan was developing rationales for the instructional methods. There were a lot of influential factors based on development, learning needs and learning styles. I had to really think about the reasoning behind my methods of instruction and the intended audience. Once their routines were determined, I...

Healthy people 2020 as I understand, main objective, is to improve access to comprehensive quality health care. Healthy People 2020 Objectives

...Identify a Healthy People 2020 objective applicable to a population or aggregate to which you, your family member, or your assessment community belongs, such as adult Asian women, urban African-American adult men, or teenage athletes. Do you think the objective is attainable? Why or why not? What can you do as a community health nurse to assist the United States in reaching this goal? In searching for objectives for young adult women, I came across a variety of pertinent objectives for the population. Specifically, I’m choosing to discuss objectives: C-18.2— Increase the proportion of women who were counseled by their providers about Pap tests; and HIV-17.1—Increase the proportion of sexually active unmarried females aged 15 to 44 years who use condoms (Healthy People 2020, 2013). I think these two go hand-in-hand when working to promote health for this population. In 2008, 59.8 percent of females between the ages of 21 and 65 were counseled by their providers about Pap tests (Healthy People 2020, 2013). Healthy People 2020 set a goal of a 10 percent improvement, hoping to achieve a targeted percentage of 65.8. Data collected by the Health Indicators Warehouse (2008) demonstrated that persons of younger age, who are unmarried, disclosed a lower percentage of counseling than that of older, married adults. This is significant to me!!! With the STD epidemic is feels that we have in this country, wouldn’t education be sterner for these types of populations? On the contrary...

...Income provides families the key necessities they need for health such as warmth, food and shelter. It allows them to ameliorate possible harmful ‘blight’ or ‘toxins’. For instance, families living in vulnerable, poor communities that are polluted and underdeveloped. This requires a primary level of financial resources needed for good health, yet evidence reveals that there is a much more graded connection: higher income linked to better health (Benzeval and Judge 2001). Income and health are closely associated. Despite the economic growth America has experienced in the last few years and although life expectancy and health services have improved, the connection between income and health inequality has expand. With regards to the care of children, communication between the provider and parent encourages shared decision-making and helps the parent take charge of their child’s health. (CITE). Communication breakdown, which includes low health literacy, often occurs during office visits and can lead to the parent’s inability to manage their child’s health care (cite). Problem Statement Poor communication and low health literacy have been shown to cause decreased health maintenance, an increase in hospitalization, and infrequent use of preventative services (Nouri & Rudd, 2015).
