...October 2017 Literary Analysis of “Heaven is for Real” Directed by Randall Wallace, “Heaven is for Real (2014)” is one of the most eye-catching drama fiction movies in Hollywood (Wallace et al. 6). The performance and sense of humor reflected in the movie make it a perfect fiction film to watch. The director spells out the agenda of the movie handily in the title’s declarative sentence (Burpo and Vincent 12). The storyline of the movie is based on how Colton, the four-year-old star in the film visited heaven and survived to narrate the pleasures in heaven. The young boy did not die rather he was just going through a critical surgical process of appendectomy and had to be put through anesthesia, which gave him the sense of visiting another world. The movie revolves around a religious theme of life after death, which is a Christian belief (Wallace et al. 15). After the surgical process, Colton tells the story of his encounter with Jesus. The reader could easily make a comparison between this theme and the works of Dante, but in Lewis’ book the reader sees more humor and more realistic occurrences. For example, the narrator enters into the gate to heaven and hell when he steps aboard an ordinary city bus. The book begins with a sad person – the narrator – who is walking in a very evil city. The narrator looks around and sees that everyone in this city is suffering in some way. He then gets on the bus and finds that all the passengers are ghosts. However, as the bus comes close to heaven, these ghosts once more become people and the land becomes less evil. When the narrator steps from the bus he finds that the landscape is very real and because of this he is physically hurt. Yet the ghosts are allowed to pass through this land in order to reach a city that is apparently Heaven. When the bus reaches the city of Heaven, the passengers are allowed to choose whether they want to stay as ghosts or become spirits. Jack Post Abstract Although Douglas Sirk’ All That Heaven Allows (1954) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002) are both characterized as melodramas, they address their spectators differently. The divergent (emotional) reactions towards both films are the effect of different rhetorical strategies: the first can be seen a typical example of baroque discourse and the latter as a specimen of mannerist discourse. The reference to the terms melodrama, mannerism and baroque does not imply that these films are just formal repetitions of historical periods or that they thematically and structurally refer to historical styles, but that they are characterized by opposing discursive strategies which came to the foreground in a specific historical time and constellation. Because these discursive strategies return in other historical periods and socialpolitical circumstances in different guises and with different aims, they can be compared to what Aby Warburg calls Pathosformeln (pathos formula). He lived from about 1632-1705 and composed work in his later life that was ahead of his time, and anticipated the later style of Rococo. Giordano's work "Birth of the Virgin" was one of his most revered works. Using oil on canvas, Giordano experimented with the use of light and layers of perspective in this work, showing two tiers of the biblical scene that are connected in some respects, yet separate in their actual realms, to evoke a powerful yet peaceful mood just after the birth of the Virgin Mary. The overall experience of seeing this work in person is captivating because of the multiple dimensions and complexity of the image. The scene of the painting is set just after the birth of the virgin Mary, and she is shown being cared for by a group of attendants, with her father looking on close by, and her mother resting off to the side. The lines in the painting contribute to its complexity in that there is a horizontal line organization that separates the top tier (the heavenly realm) from the bottom tier (the earthly realm) of the painting.
