A computer is an electronic machine which helps solving problems quickly and easily. It solves problems according to instructions given to it by the computer user.

- The first computer was invented in the US in 1969 at the Rowayton Library in Norwalk, CT

Invention
Nobody knows who built the first computer. This is because the word "computer" used to mean a person who did maths as their job (a human computer). Because of this, some people say that humans were the first computers. Human computers got bored doing the same maths over and over again, and made tools (mostly mechanical calculating devices like abacuses) to help them get the answers to their problems. It is said that the inventor of the 'modern' computer was Charles Babbage.

Automation
Humans have a problem with maths. To show this, try doing 584 x 3,220 in your head. It is hard to remember all the steps! People made tools to help them remember where they were in a maths problem. The other problem people have is that they have to do the same problem over and over and over again. A cashier used to make change every day in her head or with a piece of paper. That took a lot of time and people made mistakes. So people made machines that did those same things over and over. This part of computer history is called the "history of automated calculation," which is a fancy phrase for "the history of machines that make it easy for me to do this same maths problem over and over without making mistakes."

The abacus, the slide rule, the astrolabe and the Antikythera mechanism (which dates from about 150-100 BC) are examples of automated calculation machines.

Programming
Main page: Computer programming
Some people did not want a machine that would do the same thing over and over again. For example, a music box is a machine that plays the same music over and over again. Some people wanted to be able to tell their machine to do different things. For example, they wanted to tell the music box to play different music every time. They wanted to be able to program the music box- to order the music box to play different music. This part of computer history is called the "history of programmable machines" which is a fancy phrase for "The history of machines that I can order to do different things if I know how to speak their language."

One of the first examples of this was built by Hero of Alexandria (c. 10–70 AD). He built a mechanical theater which performed a play lasting 10 minutes and was operated by a complex system of ropes and drums. These ropes and drums were the language of the machine- they told what the machine did and when. Some people argue that this is the first programmable machine.[1]

Most historians agree that the "castle clock", an astronomical clock invented by Al-Jazari in 1206, is the first known programmable analog computer.[2] It showed the zodiac, the solar and lunar orbits, a crescent moon-shaped pointer travelling across a gateway that made some doors to open every hour,[3][4] and five robotic musicians who play music when levers hit them. The length of day and night could be changed (AKA re-programmed) every day in order to account for the changing lengths of day and night throughout the year.[2] Ada Lovelace is considered to be the first programmer.[5][6][7]

The Computing Era
At the end of the Middle Ages, people in Europe thought math and engineering were more important. In 1623, Wilhelm Schickard made a mechanical calculator. Other Europeans made more calculators after him. They were not modern computers because they could only add, subtract, and multiply- you could not change what they did to make them do something like play Tetris. Because of this, we say they were not programmable.

In 1801, Joseph Marie Jacquard used punched paper cards to tell his textile loom what kind of pattern to weave. He could use punch cards to tell the loom what to do, and he could change the punch cards, which means he could program the loom to weave the pattern he wanted. This means the loom was programmable.

Modern computers were made when someone (Charles Babbage) had an idea. He wanted to make a machine that could do all the boring parts of math, (like the automated calculators) and could be told to do them different ways (like the programmable machines.) Charles Babbage was the first to make a design of a fully programmable mechanical computer. He called it the "The Analytical Engine".[8] Because Babbage did not have enough money and always changed his design when he had a better idea, he never built his Analytical Engine.

As time went on, computers got more and more popular. And that stands out at the beginning. This is because people get bored easily doing the same thing over and over. Imagine spending your life writing things down on index cards, storing them, and then having to go find them again. The U.S. Census Bureau in 1890 had hundreds of people doing just that. People got very bored and very frustrated, and would say, "There HAS to be an easier way to do this." Then a clever person worked out how to make machines do a lot of the work. Herman Hollerith figured out how to make a machine that would automatically add up information that the Census bureau collected. The Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation(which later became IBM) made his machines, and everyone was happy. At least, they were happy until their machines broke down, got jammed, and had to be repaired. This is when the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation invented tech support.

Because of machines like this, new ways of talking to these machines were invented, and new types of machines were invented, and eventually the computer as we know it was born.

Of Mice and Men

...George said “Aw, Lennie!” “George put his hand on Lennie’s shoulder” (Of Mice and Men). “I ain’t taking it away just for meanness” (Of Mice and Men). “That mouse ain’t fresh, Lennie; and beside, you’ve broke it petting it” (Of Mice and Men). Here George demonstrated he cared about Lennie’s feelings. He wanted Lennie to understand that he was not taking the mouse from him just because he didn’t want him to have it; it was because it was died and he could get sick. George showed compassion toward Lennie when George places his hand on Lennie’s should as a way to comfort Lennie because the mouse was taken away from him. Another instant when George demonstrated he cared about Lennie was when Lennie got in trouble for the first time in Weed. Lennie said “jus’ wanted to feel that girl’s dress---jus’ wanted to pet it like it was a mouse---Well, how the hell did she know you jus’ wanted to feel her dress?” (Of Mice and Men). Because Lennie grab this girl’s dress and wouldn’t let go he got accused of raping this girl. Since, no one was going to believe Lennie didn’t do anything bad to this girl but only grabbing the dress both Lennie and George had to escape from Weed before they would kill Lennie. Here George again demonstrates how much he really cares about Lennie because they escaped together. George did not leave Lennie alone in this situation. George understood that Lennie didn’t mean any harm but was mentally unable to recognize that his actions were viewed at...

Second, what i've noticed that my artist does sculptors of animals. I've also noticed that he does paintings of the past. When i look at his paintings i think of the times when they would draw on the walls. His style seems soft but then again feels bold and heavy. His artwork isn't really satisfying to look at, in my opinion. His art is more realistic than abstract. I wasn't drawn to my artist, i couldn't find any that I really liked...

Men Withour Women

...nothing to do against death and the scars of the war in Men without women In this essay I’m talking about the main issues present in the following short stories in Men without women by Ernest Hemingway (1928): In another country (25-29), Hills like white elephants (29-33), The killers (33-40) and Now I lay me (83). In another country is about a wounded American soldier recuperating from an injury by receiving treatments from machines in a hospital in Milan, Italy. Machines. With him there’s an Italian major receiving treatment for a shriveled hand. There is a strong optimism of a physician employing the new machines which is contrasted with the skepticism of Italian major who, disbelieving in the machines, nevertheless comes regularly for therapy to his hand. That daily attendance is interrupted only with the sudden death of the major’s wife. The machines were new, as result, the narrator and the major were trying them. And although they both didn’t trust in the machines they were under their treatment because they really wanted to recover. The major wanted to be his wife and the narrator probably wanted to clean his pride because his wound and medals were “fake”. What I think can be infer from the text is that even if the machines have success healing the soldiers, the war for them won’t end because is not just facing enemy on the front line but also picking up the pieces of their damaged lives and facing the prospect of tomorrow. As a consequence the machines are not...

Benjamin

...everyone. I think people are like a clover one plant but with three parts. With some observations I want to go into depth and determine if people change the ways they talk depending on whom they are talking to, family, friends and co-works/ professional world. I feel that the way someone speaks determines the way people think about them. It is important because no one wants their co-workers to think they are not smart or friends to think they are arrogant. I took the time to go and observed two people in their daily lives. I followed Mark and Tina around for six hours each- two at work, two with their family, and two with their friends. Mark is 50 years old and has 3 children; he has been working in the same factory as Tina for the last 30 years. Tina has been working in this plant for the last 7 years and is 30 years old. She also has 2 children. I chose to follow Mark and Tina because they work at the same factory, went to the same high school, and grew up in the same area. I did this because I felt like this would make my observations close to each other, therefore if there are any changes in the way they talk between family, friends, and co-workers it would reduce the chances that it could be from outside influences. The first time I went to observe I went to a factory in Findlay, Ohio to see both Tina and Mark at the same time. I sat and observed them without asking them any questions. I did not want to ask them any questions because I did not want to influence...

Moral Standards In Macbeth

...written by William Sakesphere about a British nobleman who brings about his own horrible fate. In Macbeth, Macbeth starts out by being a good man with high moral standards. As the play continues you can see his standards become lower and lower in his sides and soliloquies. Macbeth soon realizes that trying to push your own fate instead of allowing it to play out the way it was meant to will get you into trouble. In act one scene four Macbeth delivers a soliloquy that tells his feelings about killing Malcolm and the King: The prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down, or else o'erleap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black...

Evil Deeds

...The argument which I am focusing on is titled “No One Knowingly Does Evil” and is written by Socrates. This argument concludes that those who do evil things do them involuntarily. According to Socrates it is not in human nature to choose to act in a way what one believes to be harmful, instead of a way that is good.  He claimed that all wrong, or evil, is only done out of ignorance and not from the intention to do evil. This view appears controversial because people are known to occasionally commit deeds that are apparently evil either out of self-interest or acting on impulse, against their better judgment. It is at this point that we come to an important clarification. Socrates did not state that doing wrong to others is ever right, but that the motivation for such actions determines the character of the will involve. Socrates maintained that people are never motivated to bring harm to themselves. Since Socrates believed that wrongdoing always harmed the wrongdoer, he saw all wrongdoing as a mistake in judgment or an expression of ignorance. This is especially true in cases where a life full of wrongdoing never physically harms the wrongdoer. Socrates believed that the most pitiable of humans were those who lived under the delusion that their wrongdoing benefited them. Socrates saw no conflict between self-interest and morality. On the contrary, he saw virtue as the greatest benefit and maintained that immoral actions actually harmed the agent and could therefore only be committed...

Hamlet’s Revenge

...Hamlet’s dead father’s ghost, Fortinbras, and King Claudius also look for revenge. Overall, the play Hamlet portrays revenge as a destructive and powerful emotion that negatively influences the characters. The first incident where revenge is brought up in the play is at the beginning when Hamlet confronts the ghost of his father. Horatio, Hamlet’s friend, is the one who tells Hamlet that there is a ghost that Hamlet needs to see. Intrigued by this thought, Hamlet goes with Horatio to see this ghost. As it turns out, the apparition is the ghost of Hamlet’s dead father. The revenge is mentioned when the ghost commands Hamlet to “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” (1.5.31) The ghost does not hesitate to mention revenge; it is a natural act that Hamlet should commit to honor his father. Hamlet is told that his father was murdered by Claudius and Winston 2 now must seek revenge for that murder. According to David Kastan, “To be Hamlet, to deserve the name, at least as far as the Ghost is concerned, is to be a revenger.” (112) At first, Hamlet is shocked by this news and seems unable to understand what has just been told to him. Even his friend Horatio comments, “These...

Business of Facebook

...Considering he is a college drop-out, he has done well for himself. This genius of a man has built Facebook into the most used social network in the world. The inspiring thing about it is that he is still building. He refuses to be complacent and will not settle for anything but the best. As I know from the article, there is a lot of knowledge to be learned from the 27 year old entrepreneur, who made his first million dollars at age 19. This article is very useful in learning how to be a successful entrepreneur. Some important advice that I retained from this article is to stay in control of the situation. It's important not to let people walk all over you or take advantage of you because if you let them, they will continue to take advantage of you all the time. It will also allow you to gain respect from others when they see that you are steadfast. When executives met Mark Zuckerberg in his Adidas flip flops they assumed they were dealing with a young kid who happened to come up with this great idea but didn't know how good it really was, however, Zuckerberg outsmarted them in many ways. Many "big shots" jumped on the opportunity to try and buy Facebook from Zuckerberg. Their thinking was that they were dealing with a money hungry, ignorant adolescent. They were wrong; they didn't even know that they would actually learn something from him. One of the most important things that I gained from the article that will be useful for me as I become a manager is not to jump on the first...
