Throughout my high school career, I have demonstrated excellent leadership abilities both in and out of school. Having two younger brothers, I have always felt it was my responsibility to be a leader to them, rather I liked it or not. I’ve always wanted to be a good example for them, and I feel that they are part of the reason I am so successful today. Although we have a great father, who raised us in a safe, stable, and happy environment, I knew he did not want me, and my brothers to take the same path he did. Instead of coming straight out of highschool and getting a job to support a family, as he did, he wanted us to go to college, experience life, and travel, before having to worry about supporting a family. Throughout my high school career, I was the president of the Black Student Union, and the President/Founder of “Team Green” which was a healthy lifestyle club. I also participated in Rotary Interact and was a mentor in Freshman Mentor Club. All of these clubs required leadership skills. As the president of the Black Student Union, I was in charge of scheduling meetings, planning events and fundraisers, and communicating with both students, and staff in order to keep the club running. This was a big challenge for me being at a predominately hispanic school. In my graduating class only 7 out of 66 are African American, and there is only 1 African American Staff member on campus so we did not get much support as a club. There were times when I felt I were carrying the entire club on my back, and struggled to keep the club running, but I felt the black students on campus deserved a “safe space”. So me, and the small group of members in the club,have constantly fought to keep the club alive. The club has been functioning for four straight years with me as the leader, and I plan to stay involved after graduation even though I will no longer be president. Being part of the Freshman Mentor Club was also a big leadership role for me. Although I was not an officer in the club, I was a mentor for two freshman. Joining the Middle College High School program is a very hard transition from middle school, and many freshman struggle. I once struggled as a freshman so I decided to use all the skills I learned as a student to help these two struggling freshman. One of my mentees was a quick learner, but the other did not catch up as quickly as the other. I had to put extra time and effort in order to bring this student up, and by the end of the year all his grades were at passing level. I am not trying to imply that he was successful because of me, but I played a big role in his development as a
