...We look back on life and wonder if someone would have told us how to live life a few years ago, we would not be in the same situation we are in now. For example, a relative telling you to not regret anything you do in life, or to always live in the moment and not look back. Advice is key to living a great life. If one listens to the people who have already experienced what he or she is now going through, one could embrace life and live it to the best of their potential. One should listen to their elders; they know what they are talking about. Even though I have not experienced a lot in my life, I have been through high school and know now how to handle it. One piece of advice is to always be independent and not thrive on following the crowd or trying to look “cool.” I, personally, have always been independent and love being on my own. If you try to be a follower, you will not experience life for yourself; you will be experiencing life through another person. Being independent during high school will also help you when you go to college and even after that. If you want to go away for school or are planning on moving out of your parents’ home, you will not have mommy and daddy to depend on. Not depending on anyone but yourself will bring you closer to finding out who you really are and you will have a better understanding of what life feels like when you are on your own. Not believing everything people tell you is also crucial for surviving high school. Teenagers talk...

...A belief that I have come to hold after starting high school is that private schools fall short of the most important benefits that public schools have to offer. I have learned this through my own personal experience of going to a catholic grammar school for nine years, and then transitioning to the public high school that I currently attend. Of course, the main purpose of going to school is to gain a good education that will help you be successful in the future. This belief I do hold true; both private and public schools grant this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each grant an entirely different social experience, and the social experience, in my opinion, is much more valuable than the academic experience. Along with gaining an education, part of being successful in life is learning how to interact and form relationships with people who are different from you. In grammar school, the majority of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform clothes, uniform hair styles, and learn at a uniform pace. There were no accommodations for people with slower learning paces; everyone was expected to keep up. Growing up, this is how I expected all schools were like. For nine years I was almost blinded to the fact that people of different religion and learning pace, even physical appearance, even existed in the real world. But the fact is there are more types of people than Catholics...

...attend Alpena High school are required to take a set amount of math, english, science, and social studies classes if they want to graduate high school. If all the required classes are not completed, students are not allowed to receive their high school diplomas. This is not the most effective way to prepare a student to enter the workforce or college. The best and most efficient method to educate and ready students for life after high school is to get rid of required classes and let students pick their own classes because: they can better prepare themselves for their career and college, college tuition could be reduced, students would not be restricted in their choice of classes, and required classes waste the time of both students and teachers. ...For me the past is cold and dark, I can't say I like to reminisce about it. Mom, and I would move around from one city to the next. I always adjusted to new learning situations following the changes. The new school I went to was a year behind so I would get A's without even trying because I have already done every assignment the year before. Then when we would move back, my grades would deteriorate because I was now two years behind the rest of the class. After a few years of this, it was now time for high school and we just relocated again. The journey to and from school every day for a year I passed through what we called the hood (ghetto). ...The first five years of my life after high school were thrown away. Sad to say, I allowed my peers to decide what type of person I was going to be. We didn’t take life seriously, and that was the biggest problem. It was my twelfth grade in high school, and due to my background with getting into various altercations during or after school, I was told by the principal, “You don’t have to come back to school until final exams and graduation.” Yes! I thought, I’m only going to school for one class anyway. My mentality and structure were fixed on getting a job. Even though my dad didn’t spend enough time with helping me to plan my future out, I was a follower of what I saw being done, and that was working hard to make a living. Now I was seventeen...

...If you give yourself a chance, you just might surprise yourself. I did just that and found a talent I never knew I had. I reluctantly accepted the constant pleads from my friends to audition for the school musical The Pajama Game. They had been in the plays before and always reminisced on the unforgettable moments the crew had together. They egged me on saying, “You’ll love it,” and, “It will be so fun if we all are in it together.” I tried everything in my power to decline the invitation with explanations of my glossophobia (fear of public speaking) and severe allergic reaction when I stand on a stage, but no one would buy it. ...After graduating high school, I was always told to go to college. But no one really gets into the details of all the paperwork before college, the reality check of cost of tuition, books, fees, the competition for programs, hours spent during homework, etc. All I knew was that college cost money, that I didn’t have, so I figure getting a job, working, and save up some money. As a young adult with no real responsibility, no car bills, cheap rent, no credit card or loan debt, a decent day to day job would seem like some real money for a just graduated, first job young adult. Well that’s what I thought at least. Sounds simple enough but now I know that without the right support and guidance, my life would’ve remained the same. Day to day job, just barely getting by. That’s what turned into “my after high school plans.” Work and save a little money here and there for college. That work turned into waiting tables at restaurants. At any new place it can be intimidating, being the new person. But as everyone gets to know each other, you connect with people you share common interest with. The past 17 to 18 years have passed quickly; time always does. As a parent, I am amazed at how much my own children have grown and changed in the past three and a half years. Their lives are just beginning, too, in a different sense. Their personalities are still forming, their understanding of the world is vastly and rapidly expanding with each day, and they are literally taking first steps and experiencing milestones at every turn. Seven months ago, Jordan decided to make his presence known. Reflecting with several of my students who were in the senior speech class that sent me off to the hospital, we were all in such disbelief over how fast those months passed and how quickly the school calendar disappeared. As a seasoned teacher, I can...
