Hitchcock’s Mothers

In watching a collection of Hitchcock’s works, we can begin to see that the mother role is an important factor in most of Hitchcock’s work. In retrospect, we can see that the mother is a convention used by Hitchcock to enhance embedded meanings in his work. The mother figure becomes salient in his works Notorious, Psycho, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Shadow of a Doubt. Many critics argue that the image of the mother that Hitchcock creates in Psycho and Notorious are representations of his own upbringing. However, Hitchcock remained a somewhat private person and it is impossible to depict these statements as true. The mother figures may actually be a projection of Hitchcock’s world and the times that he lived in. In this paper I investigate the meanings behind the maternal characters in some of his most successful films as they are hardly the same, but they do function as a way to advance the plot and add depth to the complexities of the characters’ minds Alfred Hitchcock never said anything negative about his mother. In fact, most quotes of Hitchcock regarding his mother have been nothing but positive. There is a story that claims Hitchcock having to report to the foot of his mother’s bed, confessing his daily activities to his mother. This would seem a little twisted in the eyes of today’s society - being forced to list off his sins to his mother’s ears. Nonetheless, the period in which his mother brought up Hitch retained a very common Catholic tradition for the children to give bedside confessions every night (McGilligan 9). Although strict, his mother was hardly different from most. With this being said, it is hard to claim that Hitchcock’s mother had smothered her son, or was at all a horrible mother. Through the dialogue in their conversation about Norman’s mother, we see the split personality becoming slowly more prevalent. This can especially be seen when Marion mentions putting his mother in “someplace,” referring to an institution, Norman’s face develops into this sinister look where his face falls behind the shadows while his eyes suddenly lights up; in this scene, Norman’s true character is hinted at and subtly foreshadows what is later to come. One of the most notable is the movie Psycho. In 1960 nobody had ever seen this kind of horror film. Audiences sat on the corners of their seats waiting for the next scene worrying about the characters they were seeing as the plot unfolded. I had mixed opinions about the film Psycho. I thought starting out that the movie was very slow. Not a lot was happening in regards to moving the plot forward and I found it difficult to watch. Towards the beginning I actually fell asleep a few times. I also didn’t like that the first part of the movie really had nothing to do with the middle and end of the film. What I mean by this is when the movie opened the audience was following the life of Marion Crane. We learn her back story. Marion was a secretary who embezzled forty thousand dollars from her employer and then took off with the intention of running way to her lover Sam Loomis. Along the way it begins to rain and she gets tired and decides to stop at the Bates motel and meets, the owner, Norman Bates which seals her fate. After they spend some time talking over dinner they both retire to their separate rooms for the night and Marion decides to shower before bed. At this point Norman comes in and stabs her to death. ...Genre conventions in North by Northwest and The Bourne Identity The Bourne Identity and North by Northwest are both classified in the thriller genre, yet the changes since 1959 are very recognizable. In both films, violence would have been somewhat shocking to the audience of the time. In 1959 the thriller genre was not as popular or extreme as today, and so they were likely stunned by the tension and visceral nature of the film. However, if you compare it with the violence in The Bourne Identity, it seems completely tame. There are numerous bloody fight scenes, a man attempting to commit suicide and other moments of such ferocity. Yet this film manages to retain a “12A” rating by the MPAA. This shows the changing state of film audiences, and suggests that the populace has become more and more desensitized to such violence. Furthermore, North by Northwest is a much more slow-paced and thoughtful film. It builds in tension and suspense more and more, keeping the audience questioning motives behind the enemy and begging for answers until the very end. In the Bourne Identity, however, there are more car chases and gunfights and generally high-octane action than ever before in a thriller film.
