...Book VII Summary: Book VII, 514a- 521d In Book VII, Socrates presents the most beautiful and famous metaphor in Western philosophy: the allegory of the cave. This metaphor is meant to illustrate the effects of education on the human soul. Education moves the philosopher through the stages on the divided line, and ultimately brings him to the Form of the Good. Socrates describes a dark scene. A group of people have lived in a deep cave since birth, never seeing the light of day. These people are bound so that they cannot look to either side or behind them, but only straight ahead. Behind them is a fire, and behind the fire is a partial wall. On top of the wall are various statues, which are manipulated by another group of people, lying out of sight behind the partial wall. Because of the fire, the statues cast shadows across the wall that the prisoners are facing. The prisoners watch the stories that these shadows play out, and because these shadows are all they ever get to see, they believe them to be the most real things in the world. When they talk to one another about “men,” “women,” “trees,” or “horses,” they are referring to these shadows. These prisoners represent the lowest stage on the line—imagination. A prisoner is freed from his bonds, and is forced to look at the fire and at the statues themselves. After an initial period of pain and confusion because of direct exposure of his eyes to the light of the fire, the prisoner realizes that what he sees now are things...

Different ways to learn language In this paper, I will argue that __As a student, Lovey can speak Standard English if she focuses on, but she does not like to say it when she talks to friends because she thinks it is not necessary. Even though she felt ashamed about her family, she loves more._ Examples from the text that help to prove the thesis (provide page #s): 1. “No one will want to give you a job. You sound uneducated. You will be looked down upon. You’re speaking a low-class form of good Standard English. Continue, and you will go nowhere in life…” (9) 2. “And nobody looks or talks like a haole. Or eats like a haole. Nobody says nothing the way Mr. Harvey tells us to practice talking in class…” (10) 3. “yeah,” says Wilma Kahale. “ I thought all Jays suppose for be smut. But you cannot even reduce one stupid fraction….” (14) 4. “ I think about dying every night. Sometimes I want to die at strange moments in the day. Sometimes every day….” (17) Introduction: What will you talk about in your introduction? As we all know, Standard English is very important for one person to live. Just like the teacher said, we must talk and learn Standard English. But the best way to learn it may not be the way which the teacher...

... 2 Few tasks an person faces are more emotionally or mentally challenging than that of managing conflict. And yet, conflict is a fact of life in this world, so it’s crucial that all people learn how to manage it with an eye toward positive closure. Over the course of a lifetime, every eperson will have countless opportunities to work with others through relational, philosophical and methodological differences. On occasion those differences may lead to personal strife, and the person’s opponent may appear to be an enemy. At such times the words of Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount will take on added significance: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:44) What is Matthew 5:44 telling us? Love your enemies, “ It is impossible to love the conduct of a man that curses and reviles us, and injures our person or property, or that violates all the laws of God; but though we may hate his conduct, and feel deeply that we are affected by...

...Self-Reflection Inner critic is that destructive voice in your head that tell you you’re not smart enough. This is a mine inner critic; sometime I blame everything to myself as the cause of something or the voice in my head tell me that I’m not good enough to do something. Maybe other can do it but I cant because I don’t have the skill or knowledge to do it. A lot of time when I was measures myself against other, such as their accomplishment, attributes or their appearances and I feel that I don’t have any those, so my inner critic tell me that I’m not good enough. There one time I want to go for an audition and I saw a lot people who can make it and very talent but my inner tell me that I don’t have what it take to go for an audition so I decide not to go, sometime I think my inner critic is my obstacle that in front of me that stop me from reach my goal. When I look at myself in the mirror and the voice in my head tell me that I don’t look pretty enough that when I lost my confident and don’t believe in my self that must, and also when I fail a test I end up blaming myself that I’m not smart that why I fail. And I know a lot of my life I’ve been called shy and quite so many times I found myself using this as an excuse to not perform my best or at least speak up when I should have. The inner defender is the voice inside that that tries to protect us by deflecting criticism outward. Over all, inner defender is not relate to me that much because I don’t blame other for everything...

...Nicolas Ceccacci March 11, 2016 Philosophy 101 Michael Candelaria Philosophy Midterm Paper What does the allegory of the cave suggest about the nature of education? The allegory of the cave is supposed to be a metaphor for the world we are living in. That finding this truth or overall good is how people will be able to gain the most knowledge. Socrates is explaining to his student, Glaucon, how he believes it’s our own ignorance of goodness and truth that will prevent a man from gaining this nature of education. What Socrates fails to mention in my own opinion is how this allegory supports a role in the nature of education. In my essay I want to go over what my interpretations are of this allegory and how it’s structured to represent our learning throughout our life. This will lead to my argument explaining how irrelevant this metaphor is simply because it is an allegory. For my second argument I will mention how I disagree with Socrates views on the nature of our education. For the last part of my argument, I want to go over what I believe is also involved with the nature of our education, not being just the “Good”. I want to briefly go over what exactly this allegory represents to me. By establishing my understanding towards what the allegory means, I can hopefully strengthen my future points that I am making. It is obvious that Plato structured this allegory to represent the divided line that separates what we know from our senses and our mind. The allegory...

...answer the phone calls. I had encountered different problems of the clients with regards on their account through phone calls and face to face interaction and because I had no idea on their queries, I ended up asking the persons who are capable to answer their problems. It gave me the idea to communicate very well to my co-workers by providing them the information of the clients before accepting the calls and meeting with the clients. In that way, I had developed my good communication skills towards my bosses, co-workers and clients. I had learned to encode a payroll account by encoding the names and new account numbers of their clients. But, we were restricted in encoding due to the privacy of the client’s account. In that case, we had never used the pc again. I had learned to prepare application form for the new client’s. This had helped me to be fast and efficient in preparing the right documents to be given to the client’s. I started to organize many documents. I started to arrange the new clients ATM card form, payroll account, existing and endorsed in alphabetical order. At first it wasn’t easy. There were too many documents and you will need to sort it from A-Z. Then I realized that it wasn’t hard after all. You will just need to focus, time and patience to finish the task. There were also files that needs to be arranged by dates like accounts of the newly hire employees of the client’s company, routing slip, memorandum, ATM card blocked, summary of the payroll accounts...

...supervisors and the good feeling of pride in your work. But achieving that goal can be a challenge due to outside forces and your own destructive attitudes. Excellence is essential in rising above the crowd and in providing others what they want. You benefit by improving your own esteem and self-worth, as well as how others view you. This means that you must do excellent or high quality work in everything you do. How you do things relates to how you feel about yourself--your attitude, confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and pride in your abilities. It is also important in how others look at you. Excellence and quality products and services are essential for a business to be a success. You may ask, why and how is this so. Well for starters, let us take a look at our school for example. Stella Maris is a good school with a number of outstanding features. Students achieve well because of the good teaching they receive and the strong guidance that teachers provide. There is some outstanding teaching in many departments. Teachers plan well to interest and challenge students. Excellent relationships and mutual respect create a very positive climate for learning. Where this is matched with methods that allow students to engage with the learning the pace is brisk and sometimes the atmosphere is “electric”. Furthermore, an excellent curriculum makes a very strong contribution to students’ enjoyment of learning and their success in national examinations. The wide range and good balance of academic...

...Lead Your Tribe to Success Interactive Five tools for surviving the concrete jungle. By Micheal J. Burt and Colby B. Jubenville “Zebras and Cheetahs” “Zebras and Cheetahs” Book You have likely watched one of many popular survival shows where people are dropped into a wilderness with little equipment, and it’s up to them to survive until they reach safety. Along the way, they must fashion tools to make survival possible So, what does your work have in common with these survival shows? It can often feel like you’ve been dropped into an inhospitable environment (the global economy) with few ready-made tools, and you must get yourself, and your whole tribe, to safety. You need to be a certain type of leader to plot a safe course forward— specifically, a Zebra and Cheetah (Z&C) leader. Z&C leaders exhibit qualities of both animals. Like zebras, they boast a distinctive appearance that others can easily recognize. Like cheetahs, they possess great speed and quick accelerators. And like both, they utilize their senses so well that they excel in adapting to their environments. Thus, these leaders are able to survive and thrive in the fast-paced, highly competitive business world. Just being an engaging, adaptable, forward-thinking person won’t convince people to follow you. To lead diverse tribes in the concrete jungle, you must show others that you have the tools to survive, including a map, and know which way to go. Five simple tools will help you...

...had contact with the soul of the decease. This also answers my second part of my question. I feel that when the body dies the soul lives in two places. The first is the soul lives on in the memories and lessons that where also past on by the individual. The other place is the soul lives in heaven with the divine. When I was child I also had a short stint in catholic school. The one thing I can remember is the teaching regarding free will and living your life by the way god intends you to live. I feel that people have free will that can be seen in freedom of choice a person has in the decisions they make day today. I also feel that people are not judge by the choices or mistakes a person made, makes them good. It is the choices we make today right now that determines how good a person is. The next question I had was introduce to me by a friend in high school. He said to me I hate when someone says keep it real. People who say this have no idea what real is. To me real is something a person sees, experience, or feels. This is all surrounded by a person instinct, without even thinking a person sees a flower. By observation he already knows with out thinking that it is real and its soft....

...experiment was an opportunistic experiment in which mentally ill children were the victims of and parents were deceived into giving their consent through unethical means such as blackmail. Children were living in a school that was overcrowded and hepatitis was rampant. Instead of the school raising their sanitation standards they took advantage of this and began experimenting with the virus and injecting it into the children. These children had no idea what they were having done to them and no way to understand given their mental state. Some parents were told they would only accept their child if they placed them in the hepatitis wing and gave consent to be involved in the experiment. When parents would tour the facility and a consent form was given to them, the manner at which the school explained the virus sounds like nothing more than a stomach bug that may last for a week at best. Willowbrook made it sound like it was in the best interest of the parents and child if they gave their consent to participate because if they caught hepatitis from another child then the symptoms would be far worse than if they were given a milder dose from the school. There are many ways someone may look at this and ask their self was it justified as we will see. "Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness." This quote is a summary of what Utilitarianism defines. A utilitarian believes that your action should...

...of him. Characterization of Dan and Beth Dan is married with Beth and they have three children. He is the provider in the family. He is ambitious about getting a career as an actor. Dan is an insecure person, because he does not believe in himself. For example at the casting, when the woman asks him about his experience and how his American accent was, he was a little nervous. He lies often and he is afraid to say the truth. He is a soft man and sometimes weak, because he is not strong enough to say his opinion and feelings. The fact that he only wanted a child and not three, says a lot about him, because he thinks about it, but he does say it to Beth. However, he mean is not his fault either his decision, but Beth’s. Anyway, he is good father and loves his children. He makes an effort to make everything works. Beth is a housewife. She takes care of the children and the daily duties. She seems to be in control, because she takes most of the decisions, besides she has the last word. It was her decision to have three children and to...

...(Excerpt from The Good Wife’s Guide: Embracing Your Help Meet) When I encourage wives to joyfully serve I’ll often suggest that they look past the family. Look through them almost as if they’re transparent-to where you see God, so that you’re doing the work for the Lord. That’s where you want your Glory to be--not through the praise of mankind. Everything we do should be for the Glory of God, and so if you are cleaning for someone and you feel resentful, change your perspective on it. Say, “You know what? I’m doing this for the Lord, and I desire to please him.” With that in mind, a fellow blogging friend told me that she used to pot this verse on a card and hang it above her sink where she was doing dishes, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ~Colossians 3:23-24 I Love that verse because it reminds me that even something as seemingly insignificant as doing the dishes can be done unto the Lord. After all, there’s no better way to joyfully serve than with a heart of WORSHIP! If that verse encourages you to joyfully serve, then why stop at the kitchen sink? Wouldn’t it be uplifting to post scripture around the house as a reminder that we are serving the Lord with a heart of Worship? I think it would! So I dug out a few of my favorite scriptures that I thought might be a good fit around the...

...In The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, a character named Johnny is a very important friend to his gang. Johnny is a great character to choose because he plays a large role in the lives of the people around him. Johnny is an uncommon person to find. He has characteristics that are hard to discover in someone, especially a guy. Readers will identify this because his personality traits are unique and is easily likeable. This book is well written. In a way it is relatable because everyone has their friends that they hang out with, like the gang. They stick together and stand up for each other but there is always someone who seems to not like everyone but still may need them in their group. Maybe only for rides to hockey practice or to help fight in a rumble like in the book. They seem to like each other in the end though, they might not admit it to anyone, or even themselves but at the end of the day they like and need each other. At the start of the novel, Johnny is scared at so many things. He is one of those boys who “jumped at their own shadows.” (Hinton, 179) The Socs ganged up on him and beat him up. “Soda reached him first. Johnny was lying face down on the ground. Soda turned him over gently, and I nearly got sick. Someone had beaten him badly. We were used to seeing Johnny banged up- his father clobbered him around a lot, and although it made us madder than heck, we couldn't do anything about it. But those beatings had been nothing like this. Johnny's face was cut up and bruised...

...Overall, I did an okay job. I was been able to overcome my fear of speaking in front lots of people. The audience paid good attention when I was doing the speech. If I have another chance to do the speech, I will do better on the part attention gather, speak more loudly and clearly. I would maintain the good eyes contact. II. Commemorative Speech: I did not do well on this speech because of the content of the speech. I most likely like an information speech than a commemorative speech. During the speech, I was using so many of “ah uhm”. I would more carefully prepare the speech with the right topic. I would keep the cute style of delivering the speech and good eyes contact. I had improved a little bit on the voice and the volume when I speak. III. Demonstration Speech: I did a best demonstration. The audience paid good attention when I was doing the speech. I have a little problem that I didn’t make eyes contact for a while when I was more concentrate on the cooking. I would pay more attention on the eyes contact next time I do my speech. I have prepared well for the speech. I was nervous because I have to talk while demonstrate the cooking. This speech is the most perfect one that I did over all. IV. Delivery Video Clip: It was a short speech but I did a pretty good job on preparing a good video clip. The right video clip of a little speech of the good speaker. V. Persuasive speech: I didn’t do well on this speech over all. I got a long pause while doing the speech. I...
