Home-Style Cookies The production process for this small town cookie company is called a batch processing system (Stevenson, 2009). The batch processing system is basically used when a moderate volume of goods or services are desired, and it can handle a moderate variety in products or services (Stevenson, 2009). The process begins as soon as the management gets orders form distributers; these orders are then used to schedule the production (Stevenson, 2009). In the beginning of each shift has a list made up of the cookies that will be made that day and then are delivered to the person that is in charge of the mixing (Stevenson, 2009). The person who is in charge of the list and mixing enters the information into the computer, since the master list includes all the ingredients that are needed for the cookies (Stevenson, 2009). After putting the ingredients into the computer, the computer then determines the amount of ingredients that are needed, according to the quantity of the cookies that are being ordered, and relay information to the storage silos that are located outside the plant, where the main ingredients are stored (Stevenson, 2009). The company has two different ways to increase its productivity. The first way is that the diagonal-cut cookies tend to require less space than straight-cut cookies, and the result in a higher level of productivity. In addition the company recently had increased the length of each of the ovens by 25 feet which also increases the rate of its production (Stevenson, 2009). Both of these things make the productivity better for this company so it can make more cookies that are able to be shipped out. When it comes to increasing the length of the ovens for a faster output rate I think was a great idea, because you are able to increase the amount of cookies that are being able to put out more cookies that are being made which in return increases the rate of productivity (Stevenson, 2009). I think that the cookie company is making the right decision by not automating the packaging of the cookies. The workers are responsible for removing the defective cookies when they spot them (Stevenson, 2009). I also think that this company has a huge obligation to its employees. They would be putting so many employees out of work and they actually do so much for the company by checking the cookies that the x-ray machine says are bad and taking it off of the belt (Stevenson, 2009). The cookie company has the obligation of keeping the community safe. The cookie company has the obligation of keeping the community safe, because they discard the bad cookies and they also makes cookies that are healthier for the consumer (Stevenson, 2009). I also do not think that the size of this particular town where the cookies are made really matter. I think this because no matter the size of the town it would be able to branch out; right now the company sells in convenience stores and supermarkets throughout New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey (Stevenson, 2009). I think that it could and could not make a difference if the company was located in a large city; because even if they were in a big city they would still be having the same type of customer purchase their products. I also do not think that the size of the company is not a factor, because no matter the size of the company they would still be able to sell its cookies where ever it is able to sell the product. As a consumer what I look for in a cookie in a supermarket is the price of the cookie, if it is a soft cookie and some time I look at the brand. I think that the advantages for not using preservatives in cookies are that it gets a different type of consumers purchasing it products. Another advantage is that more consumers will buy this product for their kids (Stevenson, 2009). The company’s product produces soft cookies which in return make over 50 different varieties. This company makes its cookies with additives or preservatives. The quality of the cookies has enabled the company to develop a strong market niche for its product (Stevenson, 2009). This increase in addition with cutting the non-filled cookies on the diagonal, makes it possible to be more productive. When one uses the machine productivity measure, it is evident that the number of units of output divided by the dollar value of output per machine hour is higher increasing the length of the oven.
