...Hooking Up: The College Experience The situation is one played out in soap operas, many a movie, and every weekend on college campuses across the nation. Boy meets girl, boy and girl get drunk, and boy and girl wake up together the next morning. It’s the sensation that’s gripping the nation, hooking up. By the time of their graduation the average college student has had around seven of these encounters, twenty-eight percent of graduates have had more than ten while twenty-four percent of graduates never have participated in the culture (James, 2009). Hooking up has been viewed as degrading, liberating, dangerous, and as no different than prostitution. However, the opinion that seems to be most prevalent is that the hook up culture is fun and harmless. In order to fully understand the hook up culture we must examine how this culture is affecting its participant’s sexuality and their future relationships. In order to answer this question we need to first understand what the controversies surrounding the hook up culture are; why the hook up culture has become so prevalent in today’s society; how the hook up culture has possibly desensitized us to sexual assaults; finally and probably most important we need to understand what the impacts upon the future relationships and sexuality of those who engage in the hooking up culture are. ...In his introduction to The Pedagogical Wallpaper, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock notes how the pedagogical diversity of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wall-Paper” prompted him to collect essays for this book. He goes on to explain that “given the ubiquity of the text within various academic settings, I was also struck by the absence of attention to the text within pedagogical contexts. Despite the large (and steadily growing) body of criticism to the story, very little of it explicitly addresses its importance as a tool to facilitate learning or various ways in which to make use of the text in the classroom” (3). As a collection, Weinstock’s The Pedagogical Wallpaper contains informed, detailed, and diverse analysis that attempts to shore up the absence of “pedagogical possibilities” concerning Gilman’s transgressive short story (9). Among the contributors are a MOO space specialist, a Gilman scholar, a queer theorist, an existentialist, a formalist, and several reader/student-response theorists. Because each essayist presents a distinct critical perspective on Gilman’s text, each essay is likewise concerned with “how the narrative teaches and how to teach the narrative” (5). Dennis Bingham conducted a study on biographical films and discusses and history of the biography. He also looks at the various forms of the biopic, including theatrical releases, made-for-television movies and short films. Bingham argues that biopics of women are structured so differently from male biopics as to constitute their own genre. The conventions of the female biopic have proven much more intractable than the male biopic. This is due to society’s difficulty with the very issue of women in the public sphere. The difficulty kept female biopics in a cycle that constantly represented women’s lack of success and their mistreatment.
