CHAPTER 1CASE PROBLEMS

1. Suppose that you are a high school economics teacher. You plan to visit your principal’s office and convince her that tourism should be included as part of one of your courses. What arguments would you use? One of the things that I would explain would be how tourism is actually a major part of the economy. Tourism has brought in large amounts of revenue and has helped increase the GDP of the nation as well as the states and cities that are thriving. Tourism helps to create jobs and should most definitely be something that children should learn more about.

2. You are the minister of tourism of Jamaica, an island country. Identify the instructions you would issue to your statistics department concerning collecting data on tourist arrivals and expenditures. Some of the information that I would gather would be how are they getting here and how long are they staying. The reason for this is simple. If more people are coming by way of cruise ship and not air plane, this may mean that they may not be staying that long and this may be one of the many stops for the cruise ship. This also means that they are not going to be able to go out and experience the island therefore not much money will be made. However, those patrons who choose to fly in, they will be staying for a longer period of time and will be exploring more of the island thus bringing in more money for the island. Also, if there are more people visiting the island for a day via cruise line versus spending a few days via airplane then there may need to some promotions made so that more people would choose to fly in and stay longer.

...KELLER GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT | HOSP 582 – Survey of Hospitality Management | Week 1 Homework | Professor: Eva Smith | 1/9/2016 | | Email address: Halander@gmail.com Chapter 1 1. What is the role of a manager in the hospitality industry? The role of a manager in the hospitality industry is wide and varied. However, the manager must focus on 3 main objectives, namely; a manager must be able to direct the operations of business to achieve goals on schedule, within budget and make a profit. Secondly, a manager must also be able to relate to employees and guests to create a successful work environment and experience for the guest. Lastly, a manager should always make sure that guests feel personally welcomed and everything in the facility is working smoothly. According to our text, “there are three general kinds of hospitality objectives with which management must be concerned: 1. A manager wants to make the guest feel welcome. Doing this requires both a friendly manner on your part toward the guest and an atmosphere of “liberality and good will” among the people who work with you in serving the guest. That almost always translates to an organization in which workers get along well with one another. 2. A manager wants to make things work for the guest. Food has to be savory, hot or cold according to design, and on time. Beds must be made and rooms cleaned. Gaming facilities must be service oriented. A hospitality system requires a lot of work, and the...

...Week 5 Assignment Name HOSP594 Chapter 12 Case Problem: 1 To maintain and hopefully enhance the appeal and quality of its area’s natural resources, the city council has decided that it needs to enact protective laws to help ensure its future tourism success. What specific laws and regulations might these be? Natural Resources are described in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 C.F.R.). The C.F.R. defines natural resources as encompassing land, fish, wildlife, plants, air, water, and other such resources belonging to, managed by, held in trust by, appertaining to, or otherwise controlled by the United States, any State or local government, or any foreign government. Natural Resource laws protect such areas as national parks and beaches, endangered species, and rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Natural resource laws are to thank for the preservation of such national treasures as Yosemite National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Niagara Falls. Natural resource laws also prohibit activities that would damage the natural environment. Examples include laws pertaining to drilling for petroleum, mining operations, damming rivers, and preventing or allowing certain forest fires. ...Running head: HEALING HOSPITAL: A DARING PARADIGM Healing Hospital: A Daring Paradigm Lisa Killeen Grand Canyon University: HLT 310V July 13, 2013 Healing Hospital: a Daring Paradigm Although the physical aspects of patient care are most easily measured, the spiritual dimensions are most often overlooked by caregivers. Healing hospitals have developed a paradigm to address spiritual concerns, which studies have shown to significantly improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. A healing hospital provides health care to patients through application of a healing model with three components that, most importantly, ensure that the patient is surrounded by love. According to Chapman (2007), hospitals have adapted a formal approach to healing consisting of three separate components: the integration of technology, a physical facility design that promotes healing, and a culture of radical love and care. Spiritual healing is not considered to be of traditional pharmacotherapy approach, therefore, the barriers in creating this environment in today’s hospitals are many. The purpose of this paper is to explore these three areas and their relationships, as wells as, barriers to the holistic healing of mind, body, and soul. Relationship to Spirituality It is documented by Allen and Crouch (2005), that spirituality as a subject and the need to address patients’ spiritual needs...

Duration of Benefits

...To work or not to work? Thesis title: An analysis of the relationship between the marital status of an employee and the period of time taken off from work due to injuries sustained at the workplace Abstract The primary aim of this paper is to analyze the statistical relationship between the marital status of an employee and the period of time said employee takes off from work due to injuries sustained at the workplace. The analysis will be conducted on the basis of data consisting of 7,150 observations and 13 variables. This paper will aim to observe as many factors which have bearing on the duration of benefits, as is reasonably possible, with a specific focus on the role of the marital status of an employee. Such an endeavor will necessitate the observation of a variety of aspects consisting of emotional, physical and sexual factors. The overarching aim of our analysis is to draw the attention of employers towards the different factors which impact durat (the time duration of the provision of benefits) and pique the interest of other researchers to conduct further studies on the issue we have raised in our current undertaking. Introduction The primary assumption of this paper shall be that married individuals have greater tendency to prolong the time they take off due to injuries, as compared to unmarried individuals, because their spouses are also members of the active workforce. Accordingly, married individuals can afford to take more time off because they are not...

Benefits must rest on the foundation of the organization’s needs and expectations. As such, a benefit is not defined until there are analyses of demographics, utilization, and the current and future requirements of the beneficiary population. Then the healthcare resources, costs and financial projections are analyzed to determine the infrastructure that will be required to deliver the benefits. This chapter focuses on the elements of healthcare benefits. WHAT IS THE NEED FOR HEALTH INSURANCE? Individuals at different age levels must ascertain their need for healthcare services. The uncertainty of one’s health and the expense of requiring hospitalization, physician care, or other health resources lead many to consider purchasing health insurance. As an economic and cultural decision, some purchase monthly benefits, while others choose only catastrophic care for unintended problems requiring hospitalization. 413 32400_CH17_Pass1.qxd 10/5/08 3:17 PM Page 414 414 Chapter 17 Fundamentals of Healthcare Benefits WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE? ...BIOPURE Corporation. 1. Give your best estimate of the sizes of Biopure’s market, potential market, and what you recommend as the target market in the animal market? Do the same for the human blood market? Who are these people (or animals)? Since the definitions of these different markets can be vague, it may be useful to operationalize these concepts in terms of circles on a target which represent the likelihood of being a customer and when they should be targeted by the company. Thus, the “target market” (center) would be those customers whom the company should try to attract now since the product could/should have strong appeal at the present time. Or, another useful way might be to describe each group, its size, and the probability that that group will be a prospect (and then explain why). The discussion of target market selection on pp. 48, 72-74, & 231 in the textbook may help. The “market” would include the target market but would also include those who are either less likely to benefit now from the product and/or should not be targeted at this time for some reasons (e.g., the amount of resources available). The potential market would include the above but also other segments that would have much less need or ability to recognize their need at some time. Note that there are likely multiple segments with decreasing likelihoods of adopting the product at any time, depicted in outer rings of the target. Potential Market – Set of consumers who have a sufficient level...

Bylaws

...09/29/13 HCA524 Medical Staff Bylaws We live in a world filled with rules and regulations known as laws. These laws may constrain us at times, but laws provide direction and expectations for our behavior. Just as we have to follow laws as a society, there are professional rules and regulations designated by organizations. Medical staff bylaws are a set of rules established by hospitals to set up a framework for excellence in terms of quality of care, accountability and relationships between the medical staff and the governing body. The question asked is, are bylaws a contract? To answer this question we must look at three things: What defines a contract, analyze court cases to clarify the issue of contracts, and finally review the pros and cons for physicians and hospitals of medical staff bylaws as a contract. Definition of a Contract: According to Stuart Showalter (2012), there are four elements that define any contract: competent parties, meeting of the minds, consideration, and legal purpose. The competent parties consist of the hospitals, physicians, and medical staff personnel who are employed by the hospitals. Meeting of the minds occurs when hospitals create terms in the contract and the other party reviews and accepts these terms of the agreement. Here both parties must agree on the exact same terms as stated in the contract for a meeting of the minds to occur. Consideration, typically given in the form of money, can simply be an agreement...

Misrepresentation of African American Students

...The Misrepresentation of African American Students in Special Education Programs SOCI 2301 Research Proposal Introduction In the American education system, there is a steady increase in the number of Black students that are placed in special education programs. Black children are primarily labeled with either being Educable Mentally Retarded (EMR), or having a Behavioral Disorder (BD) (Kunjufu, 1995). This is a concern because statistics show that even though African American children only constitute 17 percent of all students, they compromise 41 percent of all special education placements, and out of the 41 percent of black children that are placed in special education programs, 85 percent are boys (National Research Council, 1999). These statistics are not only alarming, but it has also been recognized that African American students, particularly black males, are either misdiagnosed or misplaced into special education programs. This is a noted and ongoing problem within the public school system, and it is a problem that is raising many questions. For instance, why are black children disproportionately labeled? Why are black boys labeled EMR and BD more than girls? Do these labels adversely affect their self-esteem? Is there a difference between these statistics and the lack of black male teachers in the school system? Are there differences between black and white female teachers as they relate to black male children...

This study reports on the content analysis of hand hygiene posters (NZ69) and their messages (NZ75) using message-framing theory. The results showed that posters seldom drew on knowledge about effective ways to frame messages. Frequently, they simply conveyed information ‘telling’ rather than ‘selling’ and some of this was confusing. Most posters were not designed to motivate, and some conveyed mixed messages. Few used fear appeals. Hand hygiene posters could have...

Bloodstream Infections and Iron Metabolism

...Bloodstream infections in intensive care units (ICU) are a major trigger of morbidity and mortality[1, 2]. Several risk factors for bloodstream infections in ICU have been previously established, like length of stay[3] and performance of invasive procedures, such as placement of central venous, arterial or hemodialysis catheters[4, 5], mechanical ventilation[3] and tracheostomy[6]. Additionally, it has been suggested that patients with iron deficiency could also be more susceptible to infections than those with a normal iron status[7–9]. In fact, iron is a fundamental nutrient for humans, but also a key element for bacteria growth[10–13]. Essentially, free iron in circulation promotes the release of siderophores by various bacteria, which in turn, allows the latter to compete with the host for the existing free iron. To enhance bacterial growth, the iron complexes formed are thus incorporated by receptor-mediated endocytosis[14, 15]. Moreover, evidence also suggests that a second mechanism exists for acquiring available iron in the bloodstream, through the secretion of hemolysins[16]. Iron metabolism is extensively altered by inflammation. In fact, sequestration of this element normally occurs in response to an acute inflammatory reaction, which might represent part of a defense mechanism of the human body[10]. For patients admitted to the ICU, two correlations have been established for sepsis: a direct correlation between C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin concentrations...
