...Occupational Therapy: Political Engagement and Social Transformation Occupational Therapy: Political Engagement and Social Transformation An international occupational therapy movement that embraces political engagement and social transformation has been forming (Frank & Zemke, 2009). There has been a shift away from the medical model in the last 30 years (Frank et al, 2009). The political factors and societal factors that play a role in this shift strongly stem from the human rights movement (Andrews, 2013). Andrews (2013) categorizes the human rights movement in three categories: 1) proliferations of human rights, 2) growing human rights culture, and 3) human rights violations by nations and private sector. Andrews (2013) outlines defining historical events that contributed to the human rights movement as the aftermath of WWII, the end of the Cold War, the 1993 Vienna Declaration of Human Rights that defined woman’s rights, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the recent global economic crisis. According to Lang (2001), the social transformation model arouse out of critique of the medical model that focuses on the individuals’ physiological and functional abilities. This is now a shift towards a focus on society’s ability to integrate individuals successfully. Incompatible physical...

The Blackfoot People

...paper takes a look at the Blackfoot Indians cultural and religious practices in contemporary America and the influences of Christianity and Westernization on their religion and culture. I argue that the intolerance of Christianity had a profound impact on the way Blackfoot Indians practice their religion. My findings found that Christianity has changed the way Blackfoot Indians practice their religion, but that there is a movement to convert back to the traditional ways of their ancestors. The purpose of this article is to provide a better understanding of the intrusiveness of a religion upon another and what long term affects it may have. Modern day Blackfoot Indian culture has struggled to survive for over 150 years since the first white settlers found their way to modern day Canada and the United States. The Blackfoot people have fought and struggled to preserve the traditions of the past and incorporate what were once their forefather’s beliefs with European influences and traditions. Today most of the Blackfoot people live on reservations in Alberta and Montana; there they find a unique balance that allows them to live modern day lives and preserve traditions of the past. Blackfoot Indians have developed into agricultural people, abandoning their seasonal nomadic ways. In this paper I will examine how the Blackfoot people function and live in the present day; focusing on how religion and culture intertwine to form contemporary life for the Blackfoot people. The intrusiveness...

Communication Theory as a Field

...phenomenological, cybernetic, sociopsychological, sociocultural, and critical traditions of communication theory are distinguished by characteristic ways of defining communication and problems of communication, metadiscursive vocabularies, and metadiscursive commonplaces that they appeal to and challenge. Topoi for argumentation across traditions are suggested and implications for theoretical work and disciplinary practice in the field are considered.
