The Importance of Staff Diversity in Childcare

Since the introduction of affirmative action in the 1960's, diversity has become a growing concern. Diversity has also caused employers to become more aware of its necessity in the work environment. In a society that is growing more diverse by the day, businesses are forced to recognize the need for diversity in their overall management practices. Working in the childcare business has taught this author the importance of diversity among my staff and our classrooms. The services that are provided reach all types of families, cultures, and races. But the vast majority of childcare centers tend to lack diversity in their staff. The author of this paper intends to show directors of childcare facilities that diversity is important in order to meet the needs of their clients for three primary reasons: to incorporate all walks of life in an ever-changing society, to develop clear communication between staff and parents, and to enhance the learning environment for the children being taught. Diversity has become a part of our everyday society and culture. As childcare providers it is imperative that directors become aware of the constant change and equip themselves with the knowledge needed to meet the needs of the current society. According to Pearson (2000), “...early childhood educators and caregivers are faced with the dilemma of meeting the needs of an ever-changing population. As the population becomes more diverse, classrooms are beginning to reflect the larger population. In response to the expanding needs of young students, instructors and caregivers increasingly are trying to incorporate multiculturalism into their class curricula” (p. 2). As our society continues to transform, childcare centers must constantly change and incorporate the current needs of their parents and children. A childcare center

Cultural Interaction In Early Childcare

...practitioner, I now understand the importance of quality interactions between practitioner and child, as they help build strong relationships especially when the activity is meaningful and enjoyable (DCCC, 2012). Interactions in Happy Days Playschool are warm, nurturing and respectful, but through the Aistear-Síolta (2015) self-evaluations, I discovered that at times my interactions were often superficial or directive, which was denying me the opportunity to fully tune into the child’s learning and to build secure relationships with the child. Síolta (2006) acknowledge that the role of the practitioner in terms of ensuring constructive interactions with children is demanding, but through reflective practice, I was able to ‘slow down’ my every day interactions, particularly the technique of scaffolding in order to enhance children’s learning outcomes. Vygotsky (1962) stated that we learn through our interactions and communications with others. Vygotsky proposed that social interaction proceeds development and children learn tasks and abilities through...

Personal Framework

...The Journey into Cultural Care and Diversity in Nursing: A Personal Framework I have had the opportunity to work in many different areas of nursing, and have learned a great deal regarding cultural care and diversity among patients and their families. I have used my past experiences in each different unit and healthcare facility to improve my communication and rapport with my patients and their families to improve the continuity of care. I have been exposed to patients from different countries, cultures, and religions on a daily basis. I believe that it is crucial for the nurse to build a trusting non-judgmental relationship with the patient and their families to show compassion. When caring for patients I listen to their concerns, decrease the stress levels and improve communication and recovery. As a nurse I must take in consideration the culture and religion in which they come from, and care for them appropriately to avoid upset and miscommunication. My goal and focus is to use holistic care to provide the patient with a successful recovery. My personal framework paper will be expressing my own personal journey as a bedside nurse and using my own personal beliefs, values, and philosophies related to caring for culturally diverse patients. Madeleine Leininger’s Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory, and the nursing metaparadigm will be discussed, and shown how it is incorporated into my daily nursing practice. Health and Heritage

...Running head: HEALTH AND HERITAGE Health and heritage Health Promotion In Nursing Care Health and heritage Ever individual has a cultural heritage. Each culture views the world differently. Culture is an inherited characteristic and includes knowledge, beliefs, custom, skills, likes and dislikes. The fundamental role of cultural heritage is imitating, respecting the diversities and brings people together to face the future by informing perceiving and give importance to the understanding of the past. Heritage assessment tool was introduced for collecting information about different cultures nationalities and build cultural competences among health care professionals. It is used to investigate a given population or ethnic group. The tool helps to perform a heritage assessment depending on how deeply the person identify and answer the question and is helpful in setting the stage for understanding the health traditions of the person. The greater the number of the positive responses shows the persons greater identification with traditional heritage. Traditionally cultural knowledge makes people aware about the health maintenance, protection and restoration and is the three aspects of health promotion. It is derived from health beliefs and practices. Physical mental and spiritual well being of the individual is given importance and is viewed differently in each culture. As-Level Health and Social Care Unit 2

...A02-B In this section of my coursework I will explain how practitioners apply early years care values using communication skills to show service users value and support. I will use a range of examples to explain each care value in depth. For the each care value I will emphasise on how a nursery manager and nursery use their communication skills to apply the care value, which will cause the children, staff and parents to feel valued and supported. The early years care values I will be focusing on are: • Fostering equality of opportunity • Working in partnership with families • Being a reflective practitioner • Keeping children safe • Working in partnership with other professionals • Encouraging children’s learning development • Maintaining confidentiality • Making welfare of child paramount • Valuing diversity • Ensuring anti-discrimination Care value 1 - Fostering equality of opportunity This suggests that all children should be offered equal access and opportunities to learn and develop, therefore children should be able to make progress with their time in the nursery. Equal opportunity can be achieved, through the fairness of the staff working with the children at the nursery, and also through communication skills which should be consistent so all children have an equal opportunity of advancing within learning. Tone of voice: The nursery nurse should speak at an appropriate pace (i.e. slowly) so the children can understand clearly and respond, talking at...

Laws Affecting the Agency: The two (2) laws that I have researched are both dealing with the Title X Family Planning and The Federal Employment Discrimination Law. The Title X family planning program was enacted in 1970 as Title X of The Public Health Service Act (Public Law 91-572) Population Research and Voluntary Family Planning Program. The Family Planning concern with the compliance with State reporting laws. That reads; “Notwithstanding any other provisions of laws, no provider of services under Title X of the Public Health Services Act shall be exempt from any state law requiring notification or reporting of child molestation, child abuse, sexual abuse, rape, or incest. Fiction and the Work Environment

...go about their daily lives. The short story sheds light to what should be important in a person’s life; what should be a priority, the lessons taught to children through hard work and love. After reading Simpson’s “Coins” I was face to face with the lessons that the story presented, forcing me to take a look at my priorities and family, thus allowing me a moment to reflect on what I truly cherish in my life, which is the love for my family and the importance of teaching my children the qualities of hard work in order to appreciate all that we have. The story of Lola, the housekeeper/nanny, was one that I was easy to make personal connections to and provided me with an analysis of how easy it is truly is to lose sight on the priorities in my life. Much like the parents in the story, I have, at times, allowed the outside world negatively impact my place in my child’s life. I have too often placed work as a priority over my family, keeping long and unusual hours, and depending on others to pick up my slack and duties with my child. My particular...

Personal Statement: Valuing Diversity In High School

...I decided to spend the money to take Valuing Diversity as one of my electives because I want to be educated on the importance of what diversity is in the workforce. Being a finance major, I am hoping to start my own business as a financial advisor in the near future. In the business, I will be working with many people who are different then me and I want to help them plan for short-term and long-term goals to the best of my ability. Taking this class, I want to leave with a better understanding on how to communicate with others in the workforce and in real life situations. The first time I heard the word “diversity” the one thing that came to my mind is that everyone is unique in their own way. Everyone has different ethnicities, backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender identities, etc. For example, in high school one of my professors had put up a picture on the board. The picture showed a group of people getting along even though they were all different. To them it didn’t matter what color they were or what their background was and that is something I believe that we all need to work on more....

Cultural Diversity

...Culture Care Diversity and Universality Biography of Madeleine Leininger Madeleine Leininger’s theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality was developed in the 1960’s. The idea for this self-developed theory was constructed after Leininger recognized that nursing’s metaparadigm was missing two major components: care and culture (Leininger & McFarland, 2006). While working on a med-surg unit in the 1940’s, Leininger recognized many patients often reported that nursing care practices helped them get well, stay well, or adjust to another state of well-being ( Leininger & McFarland, 2006). In the 1950’s while working as a child psychiatric mental health nurse, Leininger realized the importance of culture in the care of children of different backgrounds (Leininger, 2001). From these experiences, Leininger reported thoughts of helplessness and culture shock due to her lack of knowledge of cultural factors that influenced nursing care. This led her to pursue doctorial studies in anthropology in the 1960’s. During this time, the theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality was developed. Brief Examination of Theory The general premise of this theory suggests that people of different cultures can define ways they experience and perceive nursing care and can also relate their experiences to their general health beliefs and practices (George, 2007). Leininger believed that people of different cultures can inform and direct professionals in such a manner to receive...

Gender and Cultural Diversity in Workplace

...Annotated Bibliography In the essay I will argue that having a diverse heterogenic workplace has many benefits. I will be focusing on diversity in employee cultural and gender. Due to the increasingly diverse nature of Australia’s workforce, organisations will have to use strategic tactics such as successful Human Resource Planning, in order to attract, select and retain a diverse workplace. A company with employees that bring different perspectives is presented to be able in finding more efficient ways to operate and grow (Wojcik 2012). Diversity programs enhance the ability of an organisation to meet client needs, which can improve its profits (Wojcik 2012) Dwyer et.al (2001) discusses the potential benefits of gender diversity, such as novel insights, perspectives, creativity, and experience appear to foster and support expansion into new markets. Finding a similar association between racial diversity, growth, and firm performance, This insight will assist me to form an argument to why organisations should select a diverse workforce. Management teams with higher proportion of women promote more interpersonal channels of communication, employee participation in decision-making and monitor feedback and development more intensely (Melero, E 2010) Communities and consumers want to engage with and do business with organisations that reflect themselves and the current population (Lieber 2012). Attracting diverse employees to organisations has a flow on effect on the...

Different Forms in U.S.Schools

...lot of different forms of segregation. One of the different types of segregation are the classes that they offer for girls and boys. One of the classes for girls is the Child development class which consists of teaching students how to be babysitters, what to do in case of emergency, how to feed a baby, change them, and care for them. Boys say that they should be able to register for the class, but know they will be harassed by the girl students in the class if they are allowed. Another class which usually is only offered to the boys is workshop. This class consists of how to make different things like wood work boxes, mailboxes, carpentry, doing flooring work, and working outside. Girls say they do not want to be a part of a class like that it’s usually for the guys to handle that type of class. Although there were a few girls say they are interested in signing up for the class. The girl students that were interested said they did not want to be wanting for a guy to do something like that when they can do it themselves. There is a test that these students have to take to get in these classes because they can be transferred into college credits. When can these methods affirm diversity and when are they detrimental to learning? Consider economic segregation, culturally-based schools. These methods affirm diversity in learning inside and outside of the classrooms. Each class should allow students free choice in which ever classes they want to enroll in. Diversity

...MANAGING WORKFORCE DIVERSITY AT IBM: A GLOBAL HR TOPIC THAT HAS ARRIVED J. T. (Ted) Childs Jr. To be successful, global companies must continue to look toward the future, and CEOs, senior line and HR management, and diversity leaders play a key role in that process. Workforce diversity cannot be delegated; it must be a partnership. Although the HR team plays the key staff role, total delegation from the top, without active involvement, is a recipe for failure. IBM considers diversity a business imperative as fundamental as delivering superior technologies in the marketplace. To ensure that talented people can contribute at the highest possible level, the company insists on a workplace that is free of discrimination and harassment and full of opportunity for all people. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Today, workforce diversity is a global workplace and marketplace topic. Any business that intends to be successful must have a borderless view and an unyielding commitment to ensuring that workforce diversity is part of its day-to-day business conduct. Success also must be measured as it pertains to a company’s composition and program content. A company’s management team must ask itself, “Do we look like our customers, at all levels of our business?” “Do our programs reflect an understanding of the demand for talent in a competitive worldwide marketplace?” “Is our business culture one that fosters inclusiveness and tolerance in each country where we do business?” and, most...
