Indoctrination In Kamikaze Pilots During World War II

The purpose of this essay is to analyze the question: to what extent did indoctrination implemented in the Japanese education system influence the Kamikaze pilots to volunteer during World War II? The first source to be analyzed is a final testament written in 1945 by Kamikaze pilot Captain Abe Masaya. The content of the source is valuable because Captain Masaya states he is happy to die, since it will bring forth the victory of his nation, and constantly refers to the Emperor, which is extremely relevant to this investigation since it demonstrates the effects of the indoctrination in Japan in Kamikaze pilots and their ideology. It is a clear example of how Kamikaze pilots were indoctrinated into seeing a divine image in the Emperor and the superiority of the Japanese nation; Furthermore, the origin of the source is of extreme importance since Captain Abe was a subject of indoctrination as a Japanese student; he was 21 years old when he died in 1945, which means he was in school in the 1930’s. Thus, this information allows the historian to analyze the educational system in Japan at this time and understand how it impacted Masaya’s decision. One limitation regarding this source is related to its content, since it does not provide information on what led the pilot to such patriotic thoughts, generating a need to cross-reference other sources.
