Written by Charlotte Brontë, the novella Jane Eyre states “The soul, fortunately, has an interpreter – often an unconscious but still a faithful interpreter – in the eye” (343). No matter how many people are in this world, whether if it is through a spiritual (religious), traditional or through an accustomed interpretation, created based out of a curiosity for life’s answers, everyone has a different way of defining what culture actually is. Taking Everyday Theology’s example of hermeneutics, one can say that culture is simply based on the art of discernment towards the disclosure in the work of how something came to be or grasping exactly what cultural texts are doing and are about. J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays state “However, we recognize that we cannot apply the meaning for the ancient audience directly to us today because of the river that separates us (culture, time, situation, covenant, etc.). Following the steps of the Interpretive Journey provides us with a procedure that allows us to take the meaning for the ancient audience and to cross over the river to determine a legitimate meaning for us today” (Grasping God’s Word 41). Taking this into account and comparing it to the steps of the Methodological Coda found in Everyday Theology, one must look at the broader sense of a culture’s background before applying their interpreted definition of what culture truly is to their lives today. Without doing this, a misinterpretation is created which can lead to people being made to look like leaders of the old covenant, from the nation of Israel, embarking on the conquest of Canaan like Joshua was doing in Joshua 1:1-9, which they are not. However, once interpreted properly, one can compare these verses to the knowledge that through serving God and trusting and meditating on His word, believers can draw strength and courage from God’s presence while embarking on new journeys in ministry or wherever they may feel He has led
