...“Making It Right”: A New Smashing Book on Product Management For A Startup World * By Vitaly Friedman * July 24th, 2014 * Smashing Books * 12 Comments You’ve seen this happen a thousand times. An organization struggles with a high level of internal enthusiasm and creative chaos that team leaders don’t know how to handle any more. To bring order into projects, a new product manager is appointed, under huge expectation, and with unclear responsibilities and big goals defined within a very short timeframe. That’s when things usually go south, resulting in failed projects, crushed teams and disappointed clients. That’s why we’ve teamed up with our author and friend Rian van der Merwe, a senior product manager with a sociology and UX background, to create a new practical book to help product managers in the digital space manage projects effectively — the right way, with the right strategy, in the right time, with the right team. Making It Right is a book about just that: what product management is, what it isn’t, why it’s important, and how to approach it strategically and meaningfully to get things done well. Available today. What The Book Is All About In the startup world, success is defined by the quality and reach of the product. The main purpose of this book is to help product managers who work specifically with digital projects build better — less complex, more focused, less long-winded and more intelligent — products. By featuring lessons learned and warning...

...Book: The Feiner Points of Leadership by Michael Feiner The Feiner Points of Leadership is one of the interesting and application oriented books I have read. I would recommend the book to my friends and colleagues who aspire to be a good leader. This book should be read by all the leaders and managers to be successful. It exemplifies some of the important skills manager or leader should practice at the same time it explains the mistakes one should avoid being a successful and effective leader. Michael Feiner’s experience in PepsiCo, given examples and instances in his tenure makes it easier to understand the facts in detail. These examples also helps retain all the points and laws explained in the book. After reading this book, I could relate it to my own managers I have worked for. I also could analyze the reasons behind their successes and failures. Leadership always misunderstood as the relationship with the people who are working for you but this book tells you every relationship in the organization is important no matter if it is with your subordinate, or with bosses, or with peers. First part of the book states about leadership. What it is all about and how it has been misunderstood. We usually think that, leadership is only about telling people to do the things. But leadership is taking all the people together asking them about their views and completing task successfully. Usually we see the leader as a great speaker or motivator, but leader has to do a lot of the...

...Discuss The Goal. What's the point of the book? How does the book relate to managing service organizations? Can you think of specific service examples of situations in which managers could improve service systems if they knew/understood the content of this book? Post a summary of your group's learning from the book to the class discussion. First of all, I was surprised with this book because this book explained difficult economy theory with novel form. The point of the book is about theory of constraint. The main character, Alex Rogo, is working as a manager of a factory. This factory is in jeopardy of lockout. Alex has only three month for showing the possibility of revival. During three month, Alex tries innovation with Jonah’s assistance. According to my understanding of theory of constraint, the first thing to do is finding bottleneck. Bottleneck is a kind of the point that decides the limit of the system. Let’s assume that 10 people are marching in a line. When people are marching in a line, someone in the back would often walk faster to catch up with someone in the front. Also, someone in the front sometimes would wait for someone in the back. Finally, the speed of the marching will be the speed of a guy in the last. Bottleneck in this example is a guy who is marching in the last. Let me give one more example related to service organization. One fast food restaurant recently bought a machine that can increase the productivity by double. So, this restaurant can make more...

...1 (a): How senior managers at WorldCom managed earnings: Senior manager of WorldCom (CFO, Scott Sullivan) has cooked up the earnings of the company by violating the two basic rule of accounting i.e. accrual and capitalization. They overstate the company pre-tax income by releasing the accrual balance to the income statement and by capitalizing the operating expenses in the books (Dick Thornburgh, 2004). As per the GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), a company should required to follow matching concept between revenue and expense for any accounting period. In year 1999 to 2000, the senior manager managed the earning by manipulating accounting entry of expense accrual i.e. they reverse the accrual to reduce the expense line in the income statement. Hence the accrual left in books was much lesser than as compare to the actual payment required to make in future (Hans-Ulrich Westhausen, 2010). In 2001 when only few accrual left to release, senior managers start disguising operating expenses as capital expenditure to avoid revealing of the losses of the company. As per GAAP, operating expense should booked entirely in the year to which it relate to while capital expenditure get capitalized and booked in expense head over the period in the form of depreciation. CFO, Scott Sullivan ordered the seniors to reclassify the operating expense to capitalize head so that they can be book in expense head over the period of time. Pressures led senior managers to manage WorldCom’s...

...head after reading Being The Boss was that I wish I had found this book years ago when I started this journey into management. The book was thought-provoking and sometimes difficult to comprehend because of the notion that I may be stagnating in my own professional development was quite unnerving. What was even more concerning to me was the fact that I may be missing some key relationship- building, as well as managing myself, network, and team. What this book has made me do is take stock of all of the work that it takes to hone a skill set to become an effective leader and to continue to develop that skill set no matter how daunting the task may seem. I had never really considered the ideas of the three imperatives and I would say honestly there are some ideas in this book that I do currently understand and utilize. That being said, I learned these skills through making mistakes, which for me was a very humbling experience to say the least. This is not the way to become a great leader, but I think it is the reality in many cases. After reading the book Being The Boss it has given me a road map of what I need to work on and how to work on it. I believe that after reading this book this will make me consider management in a different light and will change the way that I work on a day-to-day basis, as well as planning into the future. There are three major imperatives that the authors discuss throughout the book and they require you to think about your own situation and rate yourself...
