Lead with respect, not with power.
Throughout my Global Lead experience, I learned a lot about what a global citizen is and how to become a better one. I also learned a lot about myself and who I am as a person and leader and also how I lead my life. I believe a global citizen is one who is aware of what is happening around the world; one who genuinely cares and is curious, and one who has the desire to help in any way possible. When I first arrived in Greece and we talked about being a mindful traveler, I realized that I had never even thought about that. I realized that even when people visit America, I am not mindful of their culture. My Global Lead experience really made me realize that I never really took the time to learn other cultures and what was happening outside the United States. The only things I really ever knew about other countries were the things that affected America. I wasn’t even aware that I was not being a global citizen. Being a global citizen means to be aware of things going on outside your country and to try and help in any way possible, even if it is something simple like supporting another countries product. The Greece culture is so beautiful and full of history. The people are so nice and courteous to visitors, especially us when we visited. Almost everyone there knew English, which really surprised me because I am not fluent in any other languages. The fact that pretty much everyone spoke our language showed me a good example of global citizenship and what its like to take your time to learn about other countries. There is a wide variety of other languages being spoken in America, today. Foreign exchange students, teacher assistants, professors, and businessmen are just some examples of people that I am surrounded with everyday that speak other languages, and I think I should lead with respect and take interest in their language rather than just expect them to know everything I say. Wanting to take action plays a big part in global citizenship to me, and I’ve learned that I can make a difference not by what power I hold, but by how I express what I believe in, my values, and my strengths.
During one of the first classes in Greece, we talked about the history in Greece. Hearing about this history, and actually seeing it during our many tours, like the Acropolis tour, showed me that Greece’s history is very important to the citizens there. They are openly proud of their history. In America, we have history, but our history is only a couple hundred years old. Greece’s history, historical ruins and temples go back thousands of years. The fact that they love their history so much and like to share their history’s stories shows me that their country’s history is a big part of their civic responsibility. In America, our civic responsibility is, like we talked about in the citizenship lecture, our human rights, like the right to vote, health, education, protection, the freedom of speech, the love for our country and many more. I found many similarities in Greece like their deep love for their country, their right to vote, and their right to have scheduled demonstrations protesting some governments’ decisions regarding the economic crisis. I also noticed unfamiliar things such as: not many policemen, no military or talk of any kind of army, and very little visible poverty. Due to the economic crisis going on in Greece right now, there were many people unemployed which has caused many to become homeless (The Invisible Tour). The economic crisis was taking a toll on the whole country and making many businesses suffer from rising unemployment and declining living standards (BBS News, 78). Even with all of this going on, the people I talked to were still dedicated to their country, and they were extremely courteous to us as visitors. They were grateful for us because we were from America and one local even said, “America has always supported us.” To me, my civic responsibility as an American citizen, besides my human rights, is to represent my country in a positive way and to demonstrate leadership by being respectful and appreciative for my country. When that Greece local told me that she was grateful, it gave me a proud feeling to be from America. Also, during Judy Boyle’s speech about the NO project and human trafficking, she talked a lot about spreading awareness and how people are putting on events and trying to reduce the amount of human trafficking going on around the world (Judy Boyle). During one of our classes in Crete, Pierce told us to write down something we wanted to do to make a difference and we got in groups depending on the overall theme of our big ideas. When I got in my group, I realized that a bunch of the girls from LSU all sort of had the same idea; we wanted to spread awareness for the NO project around our campus. Talking about this and sharing ideas, I sat back and observed everyone. Everyone was so passionate about this, just like I was, and our country allowed us to do something about this issue with the freedom of speech, and it made me really grateful. These ideas also reminded me of civic responsibility in a way because we all felt like it was our responsibility to help make our country, and others, safer and more aware of this problem. I feel as if bettering our country, even with just spreading the word of a major issue like human trafficking, is part of my civic responsibility. I don’t have to be a part of the government or a major leader in my country to make a difference.
Throughout my journey, I learned what my true values and beliefs were. Coming into this trip, I knew what I believed in and what values I led my life with, but this trip made me look deeper into my beliefs and values than I ever would have thought. I learned that I am very passionate about my religious beliefs, and that my faith in God is what gets me through everything in my life good or bad. I really realized this when I met one of my, now, best friends on the trip. She is also very passionate about her beliefs, and we would share our beliefs with one another and have deep conversations about how our faith has gotten us through some hardships in our lives. Maria, from the Salvation Army, said things about how she just thanked God for leading her where she was now, which made me realize that I live my life trusting in Him and His path for me. I have also realized my true values and their meanings. When I first looked at the list of values, it was unbelievably hard to pick only three out and then narrow them down to one (Values). Once I did narrow them down to just one, though, I realized that I really did live my life through that value, zest (Values). I have lived my life thus far with just a positive outlook on everything, a positive attitude, happy energy, and with the attitude to just live life to the fullest everyday. I live everyday with many values like open-mindness, honesty, equilibrium, beliefs, and many more, but I realized that zest is a huge value I really think about all the time. Now looking back at my trip, I really did try and live everyday to the fullest and with a positive and exciting energy. I did things I would have never even imagined I would come close to doing whether it was bungee jumping off the Corinth Canal or holding a huge Boa Constrictor, I did them all knowing that I would regret not facing my fears and taking every opportunity if I didn’t do them. I truly tried to put everything I had into the classes, tours, and just everything this trip offered me and I am so glad I did. Listening to the man speak on The Invisible Tour about his hopes and dreams, the whole experience just showed me how great of an attitude he has about his life no matter what hardships he faces. That man truly had an impact on me and how I look at my life. He taught me that life is more than materialistic things and what “class” you are ranked. He taught me to be grateful for everything I have, my family and friends, or even just the ability to look at someone in the eyes and have a conversation with them (The Invisible Tour). The Invisible Tour also brought to my attention my value of open-mindness and judgment. I have always believed it is not right to judge people that I don’t know and that I should have an open mind towards anything that comes my way in life. During the tour, our tour guide made me realize that the stereotype of “the homeless” was wrong. No one would have ever known that our tour guide was homeless if it wasn’t for him telling us his story. People these days are so quick to judge others, and that is something I have always tried to be conscious of. I think this tour really made me realize how aware of it I try to be because everyone is equal in this world and everyone deserves to be treated that way no matter what they look like or wear. I believe that my Global Lead journey didn’t really change my values or beliefs, but it magnified them and gave them names such as: zest. Although many of the values compliment each other and I do believe I live my life with more than one or three of the values on the list, it was neat to see words put with my thoughts. I have always had strong beliefs and values, but I have never known a specific name for them. I just knew what they were without putting them into words, but I think that seeing them put into words and definitions really helped me realize how deep and important my beliefs and values are to me in my life. Through people I have met and spoken to, as well as the lectures, I have learned a deeper and wider aspect of my beliefs and values and what they truly are.
My journey also really opened my eyes to things that are happening in the world today that I would have never believed and made me want to be a better global citizen for when I returned home. Judy Boyle from the NO Project really got to me when she talked about how there are little kids that are enslaved into manufacturing companies that make products that I buy everyday like chocolate (Judy Boyle). I am a huge chocolate lover and Judy’s talk really opened my eyes to make sure that I buy fair-trade chocolate to ensure that poor little kids did not have to slave in the making of one single piece of chocolate. I believe that it is my duty, as a global citizen, to be aware and even spread the awareness of fair-trade products. I really want to spread awareness around LSU’s campus about fair-trade; even try to get only fair-trade products sold on campus. Another thing I am going to do to become a better global citizen is keep updated on what is going on around the world. I am going to watch the news more and take an interest in other countries. I would also love to look into programs that help kids living in poverty and try and help in any way I can, even if it is donating a couple of dollars a month. After reading “Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story”, I realized that what she said about people stereotyping her at the mention of her saying she was from Africa is very accurate. Any person that doesn’t “look” American I feel like are automatically stereotyped by where they are from no matter if they know that person or not. I really want to be conscious of this when meeting new people from other places and not stereotype them based on their country. I know that when we were in Greece we were stereotyped the moment we landed. We talked in Dr. Shannon’s lecture about being stereotyped as “ugly Americans” (Ugly Americans Lecture). The fact that there was a stereotype called that towards us really made me sad, and it made me want to prove that not all Americans behave that way. This is another way I feel like I can be a global citizen here at home, by not stereotyping people right away.
As you can see, I have really learned a lot about myself and how I want to lead my life. Through my values, strengths, and personal experiences on this trip, I have realized that I can make difference. I don’t have to be a major leader of any kind or have a lot of power, but if I lead with respect towards everyone, myself, and what I believe in, I can make a difference no matter what.

...position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned from personal experience. Being a captain of a football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader. Leadership is respect. Respect by others. You can't force people to respect you; you've got to earn it. A good leader earns respect from his, or her, peers. They know he is their leader and when he tells them to do something, they do it, and they respect his position. A captain deserves respect from his teammates. The respect your team has for you helps drive your team to do their utmost. They see the “C” next to his name and know to look up to him and respect him. Leadership is responsibility. Taking responsibility for your actions and the actions of the people around you, being able to take the hit for what your peer has done. When a situation needs to be improved, a leader makes the choice to take responsibility. They take responsibility for the goals they seek with their peers. A captain takes responsibility for what his teammates have done. He takes responsibility for losing a game. The result of a game is the reflection of his leadership ability to the team. Leadership is example. Being able to not only use your voice, but use your actions. Having those behind you follow you as you lead by example. This is the ability to translate intention into reality. Leadership

...have certain characteristics that help people to recognize them leaders. Amongst these are confidence, morality, discipline and respect. One important quality of a good leader is confidence. When a leader believes in himself, others will follow suit. Leaders cannot expect others to believe in them if they doubt themselves or the decisions they make. In addition, in order to lead, one must have a sturdy set of moral values. A steady set of values will always be a reference when one is faced with tough decision-making. People should be able to predict how their leader will react to certain situations because they know what creed they live by. A leader with moral values gives those who they lead assurance that the decisions they make will be desirable ones. Another trait that a good leader possesses is discipline. Leaders must be able to first discipline themselves and then those who they lead. With little effort, a leader should be able to put others on the right track. Finally, all leaders need respect: respect for themselves, respect for others, and most importantly, respect from others. A leader with no respect is no leader at all. People adhere only to those whom they respect; therefore, a leader must earn the respect of others through consistent and continue accountability. Any person who has these traits (confidence, morality, discipline, and respect) possesses the keys to leadership. It is their choice to use them effectively or not to use them at...

Healthyrelationships

...I believe that respect is the key to having healthy relationships: respect will always make a relationship with your family, friends, significant others, or the general public stronger. When I visited my fiancé in Germany I saw many types of disrespect. The married guys would go out to clubs and bring back girls. We went out on a sunny day and walked through the streets of Nuremberg. The sun was beating down on our face and reflecting off the rooftops. The streets were clean and the buildings were so colorful it looked like a picture out of a child’s storybook. Then the guys threw their garbage on the ground instead of walking to the enormous metallic garbage can that was four feet in front of them. My fiancé and I discussed the disrespect that was being demonstrated by other soldiers and decided to respect others and ourselves to maintain our relationships healthy. Families should have a certain level of respect which many families lack. If families respect each other then communication will become easier. This would lead to families arguing less and trying to see the other member’s point of view because we’d respect each other’s ideas. This would then lead to a happier family. Friendships also require respect. Friends are people who we can trust and talk to without being judged. We must realize that all people are different and have different ideas or wants. Friend should respect one another’s beliefs and if a friend tells another something in confidence then that friend...

...unto you”. I believe that to get respect, you have to give respect. I believe no matter what age you are, your social status, or your authority over others, you should treat everyone with respect if you want to be treated the same way. Respect is a widely-known term, that many people claim to live by, but few actually do. In many ways, respect is like air. When you have it all around, no one has a second thought about it, but when you take it away, it is all people seem to think about. For example, if you disrespect someone, they will go on and on about how “they should be respected” and “you can’t talk to me like that”. However, in most cases, the person being disrespected, is the one who is never respectful in the first place. This is where the Golden Rule comes into play. If you want to be respected, you have to respect others. Many adults seem to feel that, because they are older, they automatically have some kind of high-set bar of respect they should receive. True, elders should be respected, but if they treat young children or teens like they are a piece of trash, why do they then deserve respect in return? Because of age? Age is but a number....

Leadership

...are very different and each affect the company in different ways. Having effective leadership in an organization can lead to many positive things including more efficient and productive workers. Leadership is the process of influencing others to achieve group or organizational goals (Williams, 2014, p. 291). Managers tend to focus on doing the right things, but leaders are focused on doing the right thing. There are many notions about what a so called leader should possess. Leadership has played an important role throughout history. Whatever we do or wherever we go, there are leaders providing leadership in our lives. Different types of leaders and different approaches to leadership exist and all are used differently by different people. These methods view leadership through different perspectives. A leadership style refers to the leaders who carry out the roles and responsibilities of the leadership process. Just look around and I bet you can think of a handful of leaders just off the top of your head that are people you look up to. As Brian Tracy states “Leaders are made, not born. Nobody comes into the world as a natural leader. A person becomes a leader by, first of all, deciding to become a leader, and second of all, by learning the skills necessary to “elicit extraordinary performance from ordinary people.”(2014) People not only look up to but also respect leaders. The ideas and theories of leadership have been revealed and introduced to us from thousands of years ago. Leadership...

...initiative); leadership motivation (the desire to lead but not to seek power as an end in itself); honesty and integrity; self-confidence (which is associated with emotional stability); cognitive ability; and knowledge of the business. An effectively functioning leader must possess many or all of these required traits. The question of whether or not people are actually born leaders, learned leadership, or inherited the trait, remains to plague the minds of many. What does it take to be a great leader? Is it family history, environment, or an acquired trait? In this world, there are two types of people. One type is known as the leaders, and the other as followers. Some decide whether they want leaders while others naturally fall into that role. Either way leaders and followers possess different qualities. It is not to say that being follower is bad role, they are just in a different position than a leader. Not all followers can become leaders, but it is possible for some to do so. These sport activities can also lead to positive educational and social values. Participating in sports can help children and young adults become more responsible, self-motivated, and even disciplined. Skills such as anger-management, attitude control and time management are also learned over time if consistently dedicated at a sport. With the new advances to technology, many children and young adults become addicted to computers, the internet and social networks. Servant Leadership

...PSC 410 Individual Leadership must be based on core values that render balance between achieving a goal based on your mission statement and leading people to accomplish that goal, without disregarding the value of those whom you lead. To lead with love is a vital behavior to me because love requires me to treat people with dignity and respect. As a leader I cannot expect from them what they do not see in me or see me doing. From a personal perspective, I have decided to treat everyone equal and with respect. I believe if you cannot treat people of all races and nationalities with dignity and respect you do not qualify as a leader. I want to treat those who follow me with the same respect as I would want. Organizational Hence one of the main problems in bad leadership is the absence of love and respect in top leadership. Many leaders love their company, organization, and the mission, yet they lack love for the people who work for the company and carry out the mission. This lack of love can be noticed by employees. They will eventually know that their leaders only see them as tools to accomplish the bottom line, not people who deserve respect and dignity. Such company that identifies its central focus on the mission apart from the people is doomed for destruction. The doom of the company is because of poor leadership. Disrespect

...I think disrespect is one of the biggest issues in the united states military. Respect is something everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Unfortunately, respect is not something that is given all the time. Maybe this is because respect is not clearly understood. What is respect? The Webster’s Dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. Another definition shows respect as a feeling or attitude of admiration and deference toward somebody or something. And disrespect is defined as the lack of respect. This does not explain completely what it is, but at least it gives us an idea about what it may be. As a matter of fact, there are many forms of respect. There is physical respect. Physical respect is shown through body language. The way you might move your arms and hands while talking to someone, or the way you might stand, and even your facial expressions. People have different definitions than others when it comes to respect, so when it comes to physical respect, you have to be careful on how you present yourself. In the army, when talking to an NCO, lower ranking soldiers should always stand at parade rest. This is part of the army standard. Another form of respect is mental or emotional respect. This is the way you perceive someone. Verbal respect is also a form of respect. This form is the one that is most abused. When a lower ranking soldier is speaking to an NCO, they should always be professional and respectful towards...

In the book they had a hard time deciding who should be elected as leader. Ralph was elected but Jack thought he should’ve been. Ralph and Jack were two different people and lead differently than the other. So I questioned myself, what makes a leader effective? What makes a leader effective in his/her group? Well an effective is hard to come by, but to me an effective leader must have these three important characteristics. They must be Courageous, if a leader isn’t brave enough to do the tasks that he asks others to do why does he deserve to tell you to do that task. Another thing a leader must be is respectful, I don't know about you but if someone doesn't respect you why do they deserve respect from you? If a leader doesn't respect their group members then why should they be respected as a leader? Last thing is trustworthy. If a group doesn't trust their leader then they shouldn't be leading, because if you don't trust somebody why would you do what they asked. Information Systems

...advancement in technology, various changes have been adopted regarding the manner in which businesses carry on with their operations. A major attributable factor to this end is the aspect of globalisation whereby technology has played a very important role. In this respect, information systems are key players in meeting of organisations goals. According to Moursund (2003), information system refers to a wider system of activities, people and data that helps an entity to gather, process, store, and disseminate information through computerised or manual ways (p.11). As a major discipline in relation to promotion of organisation’s information needs, information systems focus to explore an interface between management, computer science and information science. Computer science a major attribute of information systems basically focuses on information technology. Two common opposing worlds such as human activity and information technology are brought together through the application of information systems. As per Devaux (1999), business businesses in the modern world have become more and more dependent on information systems as a measure of dealing with complex markets in which they operate (p.19). The major concern in respect to this attribute is the internal organisation of structures in which business businesses operate. Currently, accurate and complete information is a basic tool used by business businesses to survive in competitive markets. Major developments such as dynamic cooperation...

Well a good relationship can lead great ideas, creativity and achievement. Against: (clarries) I have nothing against your point; however did you ever think already that if we treat each other equally it can lead more to a harmonious relationship? Against: Definitely, that is also what I’m thinking because as we accept that we are all equal, like the gender equality what boys can do girls can also do. With that I think we can achieve a more harmonious relationship if we accept that we are all equal. Pro: Well yes I get your point but we really need to accept that we are different from each other.
