There is a radio commercial that many of you will remember. “When E. F. Hutton speaks, people listen.” This morning we have to think about the question, when God talks, do we listen? It’s a serious question, and one that we always hope the answer for is a resounding, “yes!”

Today is Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday before Lent. We celebrate this now precisely as a reminder that the one who leads us through the coming season of penitence and preparation is preparing us to participate in such glory with him both now and at his second coming. Hear the recounting of these events from Matthew:

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
The Transfiguration is moment when the disciples get a glimpse of what the Kingdom of Heaven will be like. Jesus, changed, speaks with two important of the past. Moses, the giver of the Law, and Elijah, a mighty prophet of God. This is enough to encourage Peter to suggest building a monument to the event. Then, even more amazingly, God spoke directly to the group and said, “Listen to Him.”

I want to go back to my question. Do Christians truly listen to God all the time? Looking at the world today, I think the answer would be an underwhelming, “kinda.” While He doesn’t come out and boom from the sky, God still speaks to us. The problem is, we mere humans are flesh. We have made it too easy to postpone God’s Will about as much as we put off writing our own.

Today we put our attention on work and play and don’t work on listening to God. Even worse, with technology, our attention is easily overwhelmed. A term you hear is, “information overload.” That used to be a wheelbarrow full of books, now it’s something that can be had by simply paying attention to a screen. Actually, we don’t even need a screen to flood our brain with information. All we have to do is turn on a radio. We hear all kinds of things every day, flooded with news, music and opinions.

Our brain actually tunes out some sounds that we hear often. During a meeting with a client I remarked on a noise that I kept hearing. One of the other people said it was a certain device that always made that noise and then realized that she had not heard it until I said something about it.

Listening in Church can be especially difficult. As my daughter said, “those sermons can go on and on and on.” When I told her I was preaching, it didn’t seem to change anything.

Something I’ve learned is that one way to make sure people hear you is to touch them while you’re talking to them. Sarah has had to remind me of this working with CJ. Even then, it’s difficult to remember to do it. Even though I heard what she said, breaking through the routine is a challenge.

That’s what God is doing here. Rather than talking through a prophet, God puts out His hand and speaks. He tells us to listen.

He tells us to listen to His Son.

But listening to Jesus is not easy. He tells us to do things, things that are uncomfortable like reaching out to the poor and needy. He tells us to do things that are unpopular, like standing up for our faith and His teachings. Things that do more than push us out of our comfort zone, like talking about His love to people don’t know. He tells us to do things that might put us in danger, like going out on mission trips to share His love.

Jesus didn’t tell us to do these things because He thought we’d like them. He told us to do them because it’s what we’re supposed to do. We’re supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves. We are supposed to care for widows and orphans. We are supposed to give of our whole selves.

But like children, we push those things aside and let ourselves be overwhelmed with the rest of the world. Sometimes we plug in the headphones of the modern world and do our best to tune out God’s voice. Other times we try to talk over God, doing our best to put our ideas and our thoughts over what He has directed us to do.

I have to say this: it doesn’t work.

We can try our hardest to block out God. He’s going to get through to us, one way or another. See, God has something that we have very little of, and that’s patience. He keeps on talking, working through those around us and in events of our lives to bring us to Him and to where He wants us to be. It’s a constant process, sometimes painful, sometimes confusing, but it’s His will.

As Christians we are supposed to be followers of Christ, led by His word and His hand. As we enter the season of Lent, we need to push aside those things that we try to hide from God behind. It’s time to listen.

...affect many parts of our everyday life and interaction with people. Nevertheless, it is a skilled that is overlooked in today’s unmindful society. The reason I believe that listening is of such importance is because nowadays people have developed the mentality of “every man for himself.” People are not concerned about their fellows anymore. We are only concerned about our own issues and problems. Listening is a skill that is acquired throughout a lifetime. It is an important virtue when it comes to communication.People should be taught from childhood the importance of learning how to listen. If we realized how much we would benefit from being good listeners, I believe that things would change. Lack of listening skills affects marriages, parents and children, teachers and students, employers and employees, foreign affairs, and the list goes on. If a husband and wife learned to sit down and listen attentively to each other they could avoid many misunderstandings that oftentimes lead to disputes, separation and ultimately divorce. Lack of understanding between children and parents is a very frustrating situation. Parents find themselves unable to effectively and efficiently raise their children and...

Listen Up

...Listen up by Sierra A. Slinger "This world is so fucked up, son." Crap. He's awake, and that means you're probably in trouble. You close the front door quietly behind you, and move slowly towards the living room, pausing at the door. He's sitting in the armchair, the one that isn't facing you, and you can only see one of his arms hanging over the side. You hesitate because you don't really have enough gut to go any further. You were really late, and you thought for sure that he'd be asleep, because sane people were usually in bed by eleven, and it's 2 a.m. But no, the asshole had to sit around and wait up for you, probably drinking himself to all hell, and, yeah, that's alcohol you can smell in the air, which is great, just great. You guess it's pretty sad, though, because you can see two untouched boxes of pizza on the table, and there's Hitch, your favorite movie of all time, sitting right there on top of them. He probably planned out a whole evening of bonding, and suddenly you feel like the worst son on the entire planet, because you actually kind of are. You are the worst, it's you. Crap. "Shit, sorry, dad, I meant to get home sooner, but Daniel set all his clocks back four hours, because he's an jerk, and he said he wanted to know what it would be like to live in Hawaii, or some place. Okay, I forget what he said exactly, not like it matters, because all that comes out of his mouth most of the time is the most refined brand of diarrhea, which comes...

Listen Up

...Listen Up! HCA/230 November November 10, 2013 Listen Up! To: All Staff From: Office Manager Date: Novermber10, 2013 Subject: Active listening and its benefits. As you all may know, I recently attended a conference where I acquired information about active listening and its benefits in the health care workplace. We all know that listening is a process that is learned. As health care providers and professionals it is very crucial to pay close attention to what our patients and fellow colleagues have to say regarding their health. The study of literature concentrating on communication and listening in healthcare agrees with the acceptance that listening is a vital aspect in patient contentment. (Davis, Thompson, & Foley, 2008). To become a more improved active listener you would only need to follow four simple steps. With these four simple steps we can all succeed as better listeners for our patients. The first step is do not interrupt the person who is speaking. Instead of saying something whenever the someone says something we may not agree with, it is best to just listen until he or she is through speaking. While you are listening, without interrupting the patient, you should also watch him or her as they speak. According to "Active Listening Strategies" (2013), " A lot of information can be obtained by watching as well as by listening.” (Look at the person who is speaking.). This way all of the information is given and received without anything being left...

Listen to your heart when he's calling for you. Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do. I don't know where you're going and I don't know why, but listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye. Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile. The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea. They're swept away and nothing is what is seems, the feeling of belonging to your dreams. Listen to your heart when he's calling for you. Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do. I don't know where you're going and I don't know why, but listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye. And there are voices that want to be heard. So much to mention but you can't find the words. The scent of magic, the beauty that's been when love was wilder than the wind. Listen to your heart when he's calling for you. Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do. Listen To Music Analysis

...When I was younger I spent so much time singing in the car or around my house, even though I was never all that great at it. I have many fond childhood memories of singing or listening to silly songs with my family and now that I am older I look back on those special times and am so thankful I was able to have them. Over the years I have begun to lose interest in music, since lately I have noticed that anytime I listen to any type of music the song is immediately stuck in my head and can get stuck in my head for many days and is quite irritating. Though I do listen to music in the car and while working out but other than that I prefer the silence. My current distaste in music has not caused me to disregard it from my past and the great memories...

Listen, to Hear and Be Heard

...Listen, to hear and be heard by June Hamid Listening is a natural way to learn a language, and more so for the English Language, where you hear the variety of speakers in their element. Just listen, and you could learn and enjoy all that the English Language can offer and more. The idea is simple enough, and altogether very easy to do. As one of the main functional skills in mastering the English Language, listening is very important. However it is often under used, and even under rated. The other skills, are reading, writing and speaking. Reading of course, goes hand in hand in building a foundation, and was given quite a prominence in my previous article ‘Hey you speak good English’. Listening, as I have often referenced with my audiences, is integral in honing both English proficiency and communication skills, and is crucial to understanding your audience (of one or hundred), who is the ultimate receiver and decipherer of your either very straightforward or convoluted message. In fact, I am very glad that it recently became infamous and was even emphasized up to eleven (11) times in a not too recent storm in a teacup/ debacle involving two very opinionated speakers. Of which, much has already been said about ‘that’ incident, but I tend to think that something very good came out of all this. For one, and for quite a reasonable time, the word ‘listen’ firmly entrenched itself in the mainstream psyche through advertisements using the word to flog everything from restaurant...

A Time to Listen, a Time to Speak

...A Time to Listen, A Time to Speak Chapter 3 of the book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there is an appropriate time for everything, such as planting and harvesting; building up and breaking down; crying and laughing; getting and losing; making war and making peace. Included in this list, in verse 7, is a time to keep silent and a time to speak. Good advice of course, but just how do we decide when to listen and when to speak? Like most things, the Bible gives us guidance in this area. Proverbs 18:13 tells us that it’s foolish to speak in a matter in which we have not heard. In other words, we need to hear the whole story, not just a rumor – get the facts. Likewise, James 1:19 tells us to be “swift to hear, slow to speak”. Both of these verses seem to imply that listening is actually more important than speaking. That makes sense to me, since God gave us two ears, and only one mouth. One of the things that influences how often a person speaks or listens is personality. Extroverts tend to be more talkative and think out loud; introverts tend to be quieter and think a great deal before speaking. You’ll often notice this at meetings. A few of the people do most of the talking. In the article “The Silent May Have Something to Say”, Kelley Holland describes this phenomena and compares a meeting to a tennis match in which a few vocal people talk back and forth , with most heads following those few speakers as they volley ideas. That’s a shame, because silent people...
