1: The purpose of the neuron is to send messages and receive messages from the brain. The structure of the neuron starts with what’s called the soma. The soma has a cytoplasm and a nucleus. The soma has branch like things coming off of it called dendrites. The dendrite is what I would call the starting point. It starts at the dendrite and works its way down. Connected to the soma is the axon, and the axon is like a passing point. It sends the message it received down to the terminal buttons. The terminal button is the final passing point to get to the next neuron. Around the axon there is something called myelin, and the myelin is kind of like a protective coating. It is coating that is contained of fats and proteins. The way this process works …show more content…
When studying the brain structure there are tests called computed tomography (better known as a CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Computed tomography (CT) is a scan that can detect a problem in the brain structure using an x-ray technique to find things like an injury or tumor. The magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) uses radio waves to get more details in the scan. The magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) is one of the more popular and commonly used out of the two. In the brain function category there are two common scans done which are the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the magnetoencephalography (MEG). The electroencephalogram (EEG) studies the brain waves. Studying the brain waves can determine many things such as: being awake, sleeping, or even a seizure. The process of the electroencephalogram (EEG) is done by putting electrodes all over the outside of your scalp and collect your brain wave activity. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is done by magnetic fields. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is used to see parts of the brain and which areas are active at different times. The way this test works is you have a machine that comes down around your head. Combined with brain structure and brain function there are two scans called the functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) and the position emission tomography (PET). Broca’s aphasia caused when you have damage to Broca’s area. People who have this happen have a hard time saying what they want to say and having it connect. The people that have damage to this area are able to understand and hear what people say, but they are not able to get out what they want to say. They know exactly what they want to say too but they cannot get out what they try to say. Wernicke’s aphasia is a damage that causes you to struggle understanding others and you have the right ideas but say the wrong words. They tend to be able to speak clearly but say words wrong that don’t match the situation. Spatial neglect is damage to the occipital lobe and parietal lobe on either the right or left side. In this case if the left side is damaged then your left eye will be the only eye seeing something instead of both eyes. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that causes your brain to just degenerate.
