...We all care about what others think of us and want to be liked (despite what rebellious 15-year-old you might have said). The basics of getting people to like you are obvious--be nice, be considerate, be a decent human being. Those things are all true. However, there are also many smaller, more discreet things you can do that can have a huge effect on how others perceive you. Most of these tips are little techniques you can implement every day. They may seem insignificant or even silly, but give them a try and you might find yourself becoming exponentially more popular. 1. Use a Person's Name Let's face it--we're all huge narcissists and we all love the sound of our own name. Learn names and make use of them. Always use an individual's name in a conversation. A classic from Dale Carnegie's famous book How to Win Friends and Influence People, this tried-and-true technique is sure to increase your fan base. 2. Smile--With Feeling! Although we live in a digital age that increasingly substitutes technology for human interaction, we are still at our cores very social creatures. As humans, we use social interaction as a tool for feedback, and we make a lot of conscious and subconscious choices based on how others engage with and respond to us. When someone offers a huge grin brimming with authenticity, happiness rubs off on its receivers. There have been many studies showing how mood, whether positive or negative, spreads between individuals. If your positive attitude...

...Anthony Migliore Professor White Themes of Modern History 27 February 2015 The Renaissance The Renaissance, literally meaning “rebirth”, was a time of great change from the previous era of history. The Renaissance is a rebirth of Greco-Roman culture and ideas that differ greatly from the medieval way of thinking. During this period of time there were intellectual, artistic, and educational advances that were seen as a bridge between the middle ages and the modern era. A great number of Renaissance advancements can be credited to a few “Renaissance men” who achieved revolutionary things in many fields. A Renaissance man is a term defined as “a person with many talents or areas of knowledge” and, unsurprisingly, there were many of these men during the Renaissance. A well-known Renaissance man is Leonardo Da Vinci who was a painter, engineer, mathematician, and many more things that make him a renaissance man. Da Vinci embodied the characteristics of the Renaissance in his artistic works and paintings. One such characteristic is the Greek technique of linear perspective. Linear perspective was a Greco-Roman way of painting that seems to have been lost during the middle ages. Linear perspective is a much more advanced method of painting that results in a strikingly realistic image if used in the hands of a skilled painter such as Da Vinci. Linear perspective involves tracing all images in the painting to connect to one point in terms of angular position. Using this technique...

...If Piero was the one singled out for the unhappy nickname, it was simply because he didn’t outlive his father long enough to be known for much else. To Piero, however, goes the merit, or blame, of establishing a principle of succession there where no succession should have been. Piero was head of the Medici bank by hereditary right, but there was no constitutional reason why he should have taken over from Cosimo as key man in the Florentine state. Frail, bedridden and bad-tempered, he was nevertheless more determined and effective than his republican enemies. Born in 1416, Piero ran the show for just five years before handing over the vast family fortune more or less intact to eldest son Lorenzo in 1469. Lorenzo was to be known as Il Magnifico. So much for keeping out of the public eye. Just twenty when thrust into the limelight, he puts his eggs in other baskets than finance and commerce, allowing the family bank to slide into now irretrievable decline. Like his father and grandfather Lorenzo...

...Audience Analysis Gloria Aguilar COM285 October 23, 2011 Catherine Cain-Turner Audience Analysis In business we often communicate with a diverse group of people that come from different backgrounds and within the organization, from different divisions and responsibilities. Communication happens in different ways within an organization, by e-mail, memos, phone calls and many times in meetings. To effectively conduct in person meetings, it is important to know the audience and their characteristics, considerations on the diversity of the audience, appropriate channels of communication to ensure that the message is effective. In business, when organizing a meeting, your audience may include a diverse group of people like stakeholders, department managers, salespeople, and customers. To understand your audience, you must do your research; know your audience and the role they play within the organization. Characteristics of an audience can be irrelevant but it is necessary to consider the ones that matter for an effective message. Economic or cultural are some of the things that you need to identify if speaking to a group. “In many organizational situations, you’ll analyze your audience not as individuals but as members of a group. Focus on what group members have in common. Although generalizations won’t be true for all members of the group, generalization is necessary when you must appeal to a large group of people with one message” (Locker, Kienzler 2008). We live in...

...knowledge of the Medici family and their relevance because it uses many details and facts that piece together a main topic and idea. What made it easier to understand was that the article was divided into five sections; introduction, birth of the Medici dynasty, the descendants of Cosimo de’ Medici, a new Medici branch comes to power, and the Medici dynasty in decline. This division made it easier to go through the article when it came to the writing process of this paper. What made the article from Tuscany-Toscana so unique and informative was that it told the story of the Medici family through some of the significant Medicis. Unlike many other sources, this article introduced the Giovanni di Bicci de Medici, Cosimo dei Medici, Lorenzo il Magnifico, Giuliano, Cosimo II, Cosimo III, Gian Gastone, and Anna Maria Luisa. This article was more on the lengthy side but it was an easy read because it was also divided into segments per Medici. Reading this article allowed the readers to learn more about the members of the family and their significance and contributions to art, economics, Florence, and Italian Renaissance. The article of The Medici Family was more difficult to read and understand, but it had more or less the all the basic information you to know about the Medici family and Florence itself. Among the internet sources, this was the only one to discuss Italian Renaissance and Florence as an introduction to the Medici Family. It is heavily loaded with facts and information, written...

...matters’. The introduction of Brain May’s guitar solo, utilizing in a chromatic bass line plunging from F to B flat, builds tension as the story descends into madness (McLeod, 2001). The most abrupt and most confusing section of the song comes with the transition to a mock opera. Replacing the hard guitar and drums with piano and vocals changes the overall dynamics of the piece. His vocal melody breaks to a more fragmented recitative-style with static word and note repetitions. “Bohemian Rhapsody’ featured over 180 vocal overdubs to achieve the sonic choral effects to achieve the operatic vocals” (Mcleod, 2001). A devilish persona, is taken on by Mercury as he recites words typical of popular operas, such as “Scaramouche, Galileo, and Magnifico” which are then chanted back to him by a choir which could represent the devil. The operatic section ends with the chorus, ‘Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me’, before another abrupt transition into a stereotypical heavy rock anthem. The chaos of the operatic nightmare is over, replaced by the loud dynamics and aggression of a contemporary hard rock band (McLeod, 2001). Ultimately, and very generally speaking one could say the story speaks of a character that commits a sin, sells his soul and ultimately redeems himself (Kokozej, 2006). Queen’s creative, unique and eccentric sound has undeniably led to their success. Through research of compositional techniques, an at first confusing Bohemian Rhapsody, becomes a song with an abundance...
