When it comes to building great leaders within a company, it can be a big challenge. In this century, it is especially more difficult for leaders to perform and the rapid globalization thats happened is making it even more challenging. GE uses management science theory to manage and organize its company. The company uses the classical perspective to train its employees into becoming leaders, its uses behavioral management perspective by providing its employees a place where they can go and develop their skills. It has kept up with the contingency perspective by creating new leaders, that are able to advance as globalization changes. GE has used management science theory more than quantitative approaches to provide their customers the products and satisfaction they want. The company choices its employees based on how passionate and innovative the person can be, and it also helps its employees gain more knowledge and skills. GE has developed the Crotonville campus in New York, to help its employees and anyone willing to learn, bring out the best potential in their work, GE spends millions of dollars to provide that to people from all around the globe, which shows how much they care about what kind of people should be leading. GE has some of the most passionate and innovative people in this world, that is why GE has managed to stay as one of the top company's in the United States. The pattern of management developments at GE over the last century does reflect the pattern suggested by management theory. Management theory is a group of ideas which set general rules in how to organize and manage a business. GE supported the management theory because it uses the management science theory to grow since the day the company started. The company uses uses mathematical modeling and other analytical methods to make its management decisions. GE has had many leaders and has

Case Study 1- Performance Management

...Performance (Richardson) Wk: 1 Case Study April 14, 2013 Read "CASE STUDY 1-1: Reality Check: Ideal Versus Actual Performance Management System" on pages 28-30. Answer the questions at the end of the case. Part I: Characteristic | Current employer | Previous employer | Strategic congruence | No | No | Context congruence | No | No | Thoroughness | No | Yes | Practicality | No | Yes | Meaningfulness | No | Yes | Specificity | No | Yes | Identification of effective & ineffective performance | No | Yes | Reliability | No | Yes | Validity | No | Yes | Part II: Seven of the nine characteristics are present in the system that I am evaluating. The two characteristics that are not present here are Strategic congruence and Context congruence. These are the most important. Performance management is where managers want to ensure activities and work is congruent with the organizations goals. Strategic congruence is a way to guide employees in contributing to the organizations success. Thoroughness is indeed present. All employees are evaluated, including management. With thoroughness, both positive and negative feedback is present. Feedback is so powerful and can be misinterpreted. The type of feedback, employees and managers give can determine if it is effective or not. Practicality isn’t exactly ideal. While the evaluation system was easy to use, the basic questionnaire was not tailored to each job. Read "CASE STUDY 1-2: Performance Management at Network Solutions...

Security Management Case Study #1

...SMT 320 Case Study #1 Kristian Lauren R. Martin November 6, 2011 Case Study #1 Building the Foundation – Security Assessments As the security manager of a major corporation tasked with creating the initial security assessment and auditing program for the company, the first step in developing proposals for the security services would be conducting a comprehensive survey (policies, procedures and operations) of the entire facility to identify the critical factors affecting the security of the premises (Broder, 2006). The next step would be to analyze the vulnerabilities and recommend protection which is cost-effective (Broder, 2006). To start, establishing policies and procedures which define the mission of the security department should be the bare minimum in the role of the security department. These would include the following: * Protection against internal and external theft (to prevent embezzlement, fraud, burglary, robbery, industrial espionage and theft of trade secrets and proprietary information) * Developing access-control procedures (to protect the perimeter of the facility and other sensitive areas) and anti-intrusion systems * Establishing lock-and-key control procedures * Establishing a workplace violence program * Controlling the movement of people on the premises * Reviewing security personnel hiring and deploying * Establishing emergency and disaster recovery plans * Identifying the resources needed and available for the security...

Case Study 1 Surver of Hospitality Management

...Keller Graduate School of Management Case Study 1: Guest Satisfaction at the Convention Center Hotel Week 3 Irene Garcia Vilardosa HOSP582 Survey of Hospitality Management Dr. Pratt Introduction In order to be successful in the market it is not sufficient to attract new customers. Managers should also concentrate on retaining existing customers implementing effective policies of customer satisfaction and loyalty. In hotel industry, customer satisfaction is largely hooked upon quality of service. A management approach focused on customer satisfaction can improve customer loyalty, thus increasing the positive image of the touristic destination. Hence, exploring the importance for customers of hotel attributes in hotel selection is indispensable. Problems with front office In order to solve the customers dissatisfaction issues related with check in and check out, Frank should take into account the reservations and have more employees working at front desk when the number of reservations is higher so they do not have to be waiting for a long time. During major arrivals and departures days, the staff has to be increased so that the guests are quickly addressed and they can continue with their trips or business without wasting too long. Problems with housekeeping When dealing with a situation as described in which rooms are not ready, there are usually two possible options to consider. Either the housekeeping staff is not enough considering the number of...

Management 530 Week 1 Case Study

...MGMT530 – Conference Decision Week 1 Case Analysis Template Katrina Johnson Management 530 Managerial Decision-Making 1) Define the decision problem? This case is about an Accounting System User’s Conference that was to be held in New Orleans, LA. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, the hotel is no longer able to accommodate the conference. Management must decide whether to move the conference to a different venue or change the dates to a later time, giving registrants’ limited notice. 2) What is the general nature of the problem? Competition for participants to take part in this conference is critical for customer retention, product development and product enhancements. Due to the magnitude of the destruction left in the wake of the hurricane, there is a strong likelihood that the conference will not be held. In addition, switching locations could possibly result in a loss of customers and the reputation of the hotel. 3) What event triggered the situation? Although Hurricane Katrina was the root cause of the dilemma, a natural disaster is a foreseeable event. Management should have had a backup plan in place, therefore the triggering event in my opinion is the lack of preparation on behalf of management, conference organizers, and hotel management. 4) What are the imposed constraints on the situation? As stated in the case, all attendees have prepaid their registration fees. They have to decide whether they want to still attend the...

Human Resource Management Chapter 1 Case Study

...Candy Butchino Chapter 1: Zappos 1. The biggest challenge Zappos has to face is the sustainability challenge. The sustainability challenge consists of maintaining a sustainable company that survives in changing market climate by continuing to generate profit, while at the same time being careful to not sacrifice the overall good of the employees. A huge implication of this challenge that also happens to be a huge part of the company’s culture, is to assure the overall community and working environment does not suffer for the sake of profit. It’s a fine line for Zappos because the company has a vision to be the best online retailer with “best service and selection,” but they also want humble employees who are truly passionate about the company. That is a good goal because it’s an objective that will generate profit as a healthy company should, and I think the culture that the Zappos CEO created with the 10 core values is the perfect way to keep that balance of focus on that goal, while keeping emphasis on employee happiness. HR’s evaluations on how well the employees reflect these 10 values creates not only an expectation but a reinforcement on how important they are to culture. Doing this also creates increase of value for intangible assets such as goodwill and brand recognition. I think the Zappos.com library is clever and that HR should do more with that to maintain a positive vibe with the employees. It gives them context and reason to be passionate about the company...

Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-4706, United States a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Our study examines the state of qualitative case studies in operations management. Five main operations management journals are included for their impact on the field. They are in alphabetical order: Decision Sciences, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Journal of Operations Management, Management Science, and Production and Operations Management. The qualitative case studies chosen were published between 1992 and 2007. With an increasing trend toward using more qualitative case studies, there have been meaningful and significant contributions to the field of operations management, especially in the area of theory building. However, in many of the qualitative case studies we reviewed, sufficient details in research design, data collection, and data analysis were missing. For instance, there are studies that do not offer sampling logic or a description of the analysis through which research outcomes are drawn. Further, research protocols for doing inductive case studies...
