...Managing Time as an Adult Learner Don Campas Foundations of Online Learning American Military University Jane Herder Managing Time as an Adult Learner In today’s world there are many obstacles and challenges that adult learners can face starting college. As adults get older and inherit more responsibilities making the decision to further one’s education can be overwhelming and frustrating.”it-define ‘it’ this can be rewritten as “more responsibilities making the decision to further one’s education can be overwhelming and frustrating.” can seem overwhelming and frustrating when adults make the decision to further education. There are things in adult’s lives that have to happen on a daily basis such as taking care of children or work and attending college classes may become put at the bottom of the stack of priorities over time if adults have not planned properly. When an adult makes the decision to attend college it should become one of the priorities of their life. Prior to any study task, it is necessary to acquire some study skills including the reading and thinking (Motevalli, et al). There are a few strategies that adult learners can employ before they start the journey of furthering an education. Most students qualify for some sort of financial aid, including adult students. This may be in the form of scholarships, loans, grants, or employer reimbursements, and did students know that programs now exist where student/one student/one can earn college credit for...

...Managing Time as an Adult Learner Time is an amazing concept. Time has been said to be worth more than gold, jewelry or even money. Many would trade valuable items in order to have more of it or even go back into it. We are given time and told to “spend” it wisely. From birth our time is filled with things to do, to learn and to accomplish. What if there was a secret to freezing time, what would it be worth? As a child earns money some choose to save or some spend quickly. Can you “spend” your time that way? It appears the older we get the more time we lose, but have we lost it or just not “managing” our time. Between work, home and family all of us look for ways to cut corners and provide our normal 24 hour day with just a little more time. Usually we give up one of the most important items needed in our day, sleep. Sure twenty four hours in a day, you should be able to survive on four or five hours of sleep. But for how long can we keep this up; or how many days of this can we endure. Now that we removed sleep from our day, or shortened our sleep by a few hours we can now accomplish all of those tasks. Well then we begin the process of procrastination. Procrastination is an avoidance of an action or task. My children are the perfect definition of procrastination. “Clean your room” we tell them, “I’ll do it later” they reply. Later comes, it is still not done and then they will not be able to do something they wish to do. Adults are almost just as bad. Whether it is a task...

...Managing Time as Adult Leaner Time management is not scientifically something one can do, as time is constantly moving forward. However, anyone can manage the choices on what they do with their time. Who has time to manage family, career, and continuing education in today’s world? The answer is everyone with proper planning. All adult learners should consider establishing a study time and a study area. Students should make sure they remain healthy and find a great support system. To illustrate for one, successful adult students need to create calendars of events in order of priority to stay focused and well directed. Having a calendar that takes priority into consideration will assist everyone in ensuring all tasks are completed at work, all family commitments are met, while still allowing ample time for school work. If you really want to get into high gear, start tackling the items on the top of this list, which you have deemed as being important and urgent. The second in second place, the third in third place and so forth, you are ready for high productivity (Jackson 2010). Adult learners will benefit from a flexible mindset and schedule, so sure the ability to shift items without affecting the deadlines is part of the schedule (Dumbauld). Everybody should include personal time as part of the calendar....

It is not healthy for an adult student to work and attend to other aspects of their life without thinking about leaving the college environment and just tend to the everyday need of their families. Adult learners are returning to college by the thousands to learn that they may not be able to handle such a heavy workload when they start out, but some adult learners says that they can handle the pressure of family, school and work. Is this healthy for the adult learners or are they headed for more than they bargain for. Coupled with financial strain, work and family commitments accounts for more than 50 percent of adult college students dropouts according to a study conducted by the Inside Track, a national student coaching company. ...a student can manage a full time job and continue his or her education at the same time. Distance education has emerged as an important form of education in the last few decades. In recent years, the offering of online courses and programmes has become increasingly popular not only in distance education institutions, but in traditional universities as well (Wheeler, 2002). There are many Universities in Malaysia that offers Open and Distance Learning to adult learners or to the people who are working and wanting to further their studies. Among the first university who offers the Open and Distance learning was Universiti Sains Malaysia, which was known as “Off Campus Study” back in 1971. (Supyan , 2004). Since then, the demand for Open and Distance Learner has increased tremendously. After Universiti Sains Malaysia, many other universities started to offer Open and Distance Learning, such as UPSI (Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idriss), UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), UPM (Universiti Putra Malaysia), UiTM (Universiti Teknologi MARA) and also many private universities, to cope with the increasing demand and number of the adult learners. ...broadcast with "iPod" being the name given to a family of portable MP3 players from Apple Inc. "MP3" is a frequent file format for electronic audio files. From an educational perspective the use of podcasts are limitless. Since creating podcasts is fairly easy and inexpensive, instructors can easily use them for delivery of supplemental information or review of previously covered material. Podcasts can also be used for acquiring new and supplemental knowledge from expert sources on the web. Listening to podcasts provides learners with different learning activities in addition to readings and lectures thus reaching a wider audience and supporting a broader range of learning styles. This paper will focus on the questions of what podcasts are, why they are useful in higher education, and, most importantly, how faculty and students can use podcasts to enhance learning experiences. Advocates of podcasting believe that it can offer unique educational benefits to learners. One of the earliest reports describing the potential of podcasting in education was by Clark and Walsh (2004). They highlighted that "listening is instinctual, [but] reading and writing are not" (p. 5) - that linguistic psychologists have found that unlike reading and writing, children do not learn how to understand the spoken word, but are hard- wired with the skill (Chan and Lee 2005). Similarly, Durbridge (1984) stressed the advantages of audio for learning. In his opinion, the spoken word can influence a learner's...

...graduated or a decade since you sat in a classroom. There are significant challenges posed to adults who decide to pursue education. The good news is these challenges are being recognized by many educational institutions, and non-traditional educational opportunities are becoming widely available. School and institutions are realizing the increasing importance of making learning accessible to everyone and are, consequently, offering more flexible options for students. Many institutions offer evening and weekend classes, as well as online or distance education options. As more adults return to school, more services and resources become available to assist with this challenging but worthwhile endeavor. Ultimately, adult learners face a very unique set of challenges when deciding to enter or re-enter the educational sphere. In my case, I am facing some challenges since I started classes at ITT. I will talk about three of them, because they are the biggest ones for me. * Taking classes at not my first language is the biggest challenge for me. * Due the difficulty level, the stress that going back to school brings, is the second one on my list, * It is been more than ten years since the last time I took classes. So I have forgotten the techniques of study. Taking Classes in Second Language. Learning a second language is a real challenge, especially when you are an adult. Your first language is so entrenched in you by years and years of listening, writing, reading...

...Proposal by Lisa J. Moses EDD 7712 CRN23487 Contextual Issues Affecting Adult and Continuing Education Nova Southeastern University November 12, 2011 2 The collaborative assignment helped to identify and consider the demographic, economic, political, ethical, and social-cultural changes and emerging challenges occurring in the adult and continuing educational arena. The research identify concern for the motivation of adult learners. Kenner & Weinerman (2010) indicated that adult learners have difficulty integrating into the academic environment because of their different learning needs (Kenner & Weinerman, 2010). According to Bastable (2008), the needs of the learner are often impeded by anxiety, a functioning support system, motivation, risk-taking behavior, frame of mind, and developmental stage, which are all factors of emotional readiness to learn. Another challenge is related to language differences amongst different ethnic and cultural groups. Last, but most important, is the realization that adult learners who had previous negative experiences in school are likely to have doubts about their academic capability (Goto & Martin, 2009). With that premise in mind, the writer proposes the establishment of the Esprit de corps Learning Initiative, a non-profit organization, which offers a complete program targeted to the educational enhancement of the adult learner. The comprehensive description of proposed program Esprit de corps is defined...

There are barriers to avoid, as well as key components to include, when creating online learning environments. There are many technology options to choose from to deliver course material, but instructors must keep in mind the adult learners’ unique needs. Creating Online Learning Environments for Adults As our world embraces technology, the way instruction is delivered to students is evolving from face-to-face instruction to online formats. Creating effective interactive learning environments for adult online courses is important to the success of students. Online learning is a relatively new format for teaching, but as a growing field, it is important for educators to understand the best methods for creating learning environments with available technology. Technology can enhance or defeat the building of community learning environments. Social constructivists understand that learning takes place in a community setting, where instructors and students interact to construct meaning. Connectivists realize knowledge is increasing at such fast speeds that it is important for learners to know how to find pertinent...

...analysing challenges and barriers, I’ve located three areas of improvement using this model. Being in one of the biggest clinic in Southern Malaysia, the major challenge is to endure high workload either in clinical or non-clinical works. Subsequently many of staff especially juniors which also involved in mentorship programs are unable to define and located their own learning needs. As an improvement, I’ve choose to develop the learning contract. It can be defined as an agreement achieved between learner and mentor to develop shared expectations about what will be learn by the learner and how the learning will be measured (Boak, 1953). In my opinion it’s a dynamic process which can be expanded in time and scope to helps learner with learning and career development. Ghazi and Henshaw (1998) stated that with supporting learners using learning contract, it will enhanced their achievement in assessments and attendance. Evaluating learning contract as a tool for learning, it will leads learners to be more accountable and motivated for their own learning....

...Essay - HNC Business Management Level 4 Personal and Professional Development 1.1 Cunningham1 has defined self-managed learning as “…idealised adult action learning”. Therefore, self learning is a process where the learner develops their learning goals, decides on strategies to make it happen, identifies resources needed to achieve it and adopts the process to evaluate their achievement. Self managed learning can only be effective if a person has the ability to independently decide about their learning and can manage this without much institutional support. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that most people, though understanding the need for such learning approach, are unable to identify and manage their learning without guidance and support from an institution. Hence, people go to an institution to learn. However, It is the responsibility of the learner to take charge of their learning. In an adult learning environment, where most learners have been out of touch with learning for a while, it is important that the tutors initially provide hands on approach to guide the learners. Gradually, ‘tutor dependency’ reduces and the learner becomes more self dependent, starting to manage their learning more effectively. Self learning process can be facilitated through research, using online tools such as web logs, wikis, search engine facilities, use of social software and other multimedia tools such as audio and video equipment...

...Cephas GEN/200 November 3, 2013 Jim Tagliamonte This essay will explore views on the relationship between personal responsibility and educational success. The reasons the two qualities are essential to success in life, how to attain them as well as how to maintain and apply these characteristics to other areas of life, therefore transforming into a self-directed learner to be successful. The quote below is an excerpt from The Measurement of Personal Responsibility in Adult Learning. This quote speaks volumes on the prominence of personal responsibility within educational success and what self-directed learning entails. (Caffarella 1993) described the importance of learner responsibility and control: "The ability to be self-directed in one's learning, that is, to be primarily responsible and in control [emphasis added] of what, where, and how one learns, is critical to survival and prosperity in a world of continuous personal, community, and societal changes" (P. 32). Garrison (1997) supported this position in his definition of (SDL Self Directed Learner): "An approach where learners are motivated to assume personal responsibility and collaborative control of the cognitive (self-monitoring) and contextual (self-management) processes in constructing and confirming meaning and worthwhile learning outcomes" (p. 18). (Betts, 2012, p. 12). The traditional definition of responsibility is the state of answerability, or accountability for something within...
