...Why an MBA The MBA is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. It is a degree designed to give you the ability to develop your career to its fullest potential, at an accelerated pace. What will you get out of an MBA? Aside from a powerful life experience, the MBA degree should supply three main value propositions: Skills, Networks, and Brand. Skills These include the "hard skills" of economics, finance, marketing, operations, management, and accounting, as well as the "soft skills " of leadership, teamwork, ethics, and communication that are so critical for effective management. MBA students acquire these skills inside and outside the classroom. Since MBA programs attract people from very diverse industries and cultures, a program should be able to leverage these differences and translate them into learning opportunities. Networks An MBA degree program offers access to a network of MBA students, alumni, faculty, and business and community leaders. This network can be very useful when beginning a job search, developing a career path, building business relationships in your current career, or pursuing expertise outside your current field. For example, entrepreneurs need access to capital, business partners, vendors, and clients. Arts-related businesses need access to funding and strategic management in order to position themselves to be relevant in the marketplace. Global businesses need access to local business cultures as they expand their enterprises to new territories...

...Executive Summary Lisa Benton is a Harvard MBA who had completed a successful internship with Right-Away stores, a convenience store chain in Chicago. Although she was offered an attractive position at Right-Away, Benton chose to accept a lower-paying, a junior position at Houseworld because of the company’s greater prestige and reputation for offering excellent classical marketing training in a structured environment (Weber, 1994). Benton’s new boss, Deborah Linton, offered a cool reception. Linton made clear during their first meeting with Benton that she did not like Harvard MBAs and gave the impression that she had no time to help train and familiarize her new team member. Instead, Benton was shown around by Linton’s other report, associate product manager Ron Scoville, who struck her as arrogant and whom also was cynical of MBAs. This paper will discuss and assess Linton’s leadership approach, make recommendations on how Linton can build an effective team, determine the reason behind Lisa Benton’s ineffectiveness to influence her boss and colleagues, and finally discuss incidents Lisa could have handled differently and offer recommendations to get her career back on track. Introduction Lisa Benton was frustrated and dissatisfied with her new job at Houseworld where she started by a lack of responsibility and poor relationship with her boss, Linton, a colleague Ron Scoville and recently with the reveal of her negative performance review. Benton was concern of her...

...“Competency models describe the behaviors and skills managers need to exhibit if an organization is to be successful” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, p. 252). In many organizations, competency models can differ between the different hierarchies of managers. As a person’s leadership role evolves so do the behaviors and skills he or she must possess to be an effective leader. This statement holds firm as with the case of Andra Rush. Throughout the case study, there are a number of competencies Rush displays. The first is personal drive which is the ability to demonstrate urgency in meeting objectives and achieving results; and the ability to pursue aggressive goals and achieve them (p. 253). When Rush worked as a nurse and heard complaints of unfair treatment, she took a proactive approach and enrolled in an MBA program to change and improve conditions. Not only did she have the drive to pursue an MBA, Rush accomplished this while working as nursing school graduate. Rush’s efforts can further more be seen through the formation of her trucking company. The success of Rush’s trucking company can be attributed to driving change which is challenging the status quo and looking for ways to improve team or organizational performance; and champions new initiatives and stimulates others to make changes (p.253). Since Rush is a woman and a minority, she challenged the status quo by entering a predominately white and male dominated trucking industry. Furthermore, more than half of the...

...Assignment 3 – Lisa Benton Case Analysis Jack Welch Management Institute Instructor Ardith Bowman JWI510 June 16, 2013 Introduction Lisa Benton is a Harvard educated MBA who chose to work at the Home care Division of Houseworld based upon the classical marketing training in a structured environment from an industry leader over Right-Away which she had interned at. Benton was informed she would become a product manager within 2 to 3 years, yet was not informed of the importance of her performance in the first year. She was informed that the product manager’s responsibility was to groom his or her associates to be “promotable”. Benton was assigned Deborah Linton as her Product Manager who informed her of her dislike for MBA’s with “MBA’s act like they know a lot more than they do” and “the only way to learn is on the job and your formal education won’t help you.” Ron Scoville, the Associate Product Manager and team member, shared the same sentiments with Lisa. Linton made it clear to Lisa that she was ‘going to have to prove herself like everyone else.” There would be no special treatment because she was a Harvard MBA. Linton informed her she should feel free to stop by her office if she had any questions and she was to report to her and not to Ron Scoville, the Associate Product Manager and team member. She also was informed she would get objectives for her job which she never received and later learned Linton was recently promoted and it was thought that Linton exhibited...

...spite of these factors, obtaining a Master’s degree in business (MBA) is still worth all the time and expense because of the value it serves. Having an MBA will help to make me more marketable in the health care industry and more likely to be considered for a management or administrative position. In the following pages I will discuss the reasons that, with the career goal of becoming a nurse executive, the value of an MBA degree outweighs the struggles that I may encounter while in the graduate program. In addition to acquiring a Master’s degree in nursing, to be a successful nurse executive one must also have some knowledge of how a business runs. The American Association of Nurse Executives (AAONE) lists standard competencies for the nurse executive. These competencies are outlined in a 2008 article in Nursing Economics and include skill sets in areas of financial management, human resource management, strategic management, and information management and technology. A nurse executive must be able to represent the nursing population while understanding the mechanics of the business. A nurse executive who can understand financial implications of clinical decisions and fiscal matters is a huge asset to the business aspect of the organization (Thomas et al., 2008). All of the competencies that the AAONE considers standards for nurse executives can be learned through an MBA program therefore making having an MBA an advantage for an aspiring nurse executive. Stichler (2006)...

...Leadership Style at Nike MBA FIRST YEAR 2012 MBA 8105 – ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR LEADERSHIP CONUNDRUM: NIKE AFTER KNIGHT Prepared by Narendra Hirani Registration Number MBA/2443/12 April 2012 1a) Discuss and evaluate the appropriateness of the leadership style adopted by Phil Knight. Philip Knight’s leadership style can be analysed using the various leadership theories that have been developed. Their appropriateness can be evaluated based on the information available in the case study. Rensis Liekert developed four systems of leadership, exploitative autocratic, benevolent authoritative, participative and democratic. Knight’s leadership style at Nike can be described as democratic as per the systems developed by Riekert. According to Riekert, the characteristics of a democratic leader are: * Has complete confidence and trust in subordinates; * Allows subordinates to make decisions for themselves; * Motivates by reward for achieving goals set by participation; * Shares ideas and opinions. In the case study, we note that Knight’s style of management is “hands-off”. This illustrates that he does not closely supervise his employees, but has confidence in their ability to do their jobs and make decisions which shall be in the best interest of the company. In the case study we are also told that Knight used to maintain silence on most business issues and this was interpreted by his executives as approvals to their approach and thus they took...

...An often-overlooked aspect in addressing the under-representation of minority leaders in professional settings is the need for early career exposure and the development of management skills. During college, my leadership experience with the National Society of Black Engineers (N.S.B.E.) highlighted this reality. N.S.B.E. presented an avenue for me to create opportunities for students to gain critical soft skills and build a career network. As Regional Chair, I led an executive board of 15 students from various universities to provide academic and professional development programs to support the region’s 3,000 members. While serving in this role, one of the problems I identified is the financial impact attending regional and national N.S.B.E. conferences had on students. Understanding how much of a tremendous opportunity attending these conferences is for the development and network of black engineering students, I led my executive board to restructure the region’s budget of over $100,000 to provide 15% to chapter conference support and secured additional funding by soliciting corporate sponsors to offset the costs for students to attend conferences. While leading student peers can sometimes prove to be a challenge, my motivational leadership...
