...Boxing vs. Mixed Martial Arts Although the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) is relatively new compared to professional boxing, MMA has evolved into a very entertaining and increasingly more popular combat sport. MMA continues to cement its footprint in the world of sports entertainment while also causing more and more people to see that it is much more difficult to be a mixed martial artist than it is to be a professional boxer. For thousands of years combat has been a way for humanity to settle different disputes. Whether it be a dispute between two individual people or a dispute between entire nations. The world and its inhabitants have experienced their fair share of violence and war. Even today America is at war with individuals who are fighting for what they believe to be the right cause. Combat throughout the centuries has evolved. From huge armies marching on one another on a large battlefield to missiles being fired at a target from half way across the world, the way people fight has changed. Now, in today's society, combat has evolved into something else; a sport. The world of combat sports is vast and diverse. Individuals from all different disciplines of martial arts compete against one another to decide who amongst them the best fighter is. Two of the most popular combat sports in the world today are boxing and mixed martial arts. Ever since the emergence of mixed martial arts, it has been compared with boxing. Which sport is more entertaining and which...

...Laura Cox 03/07/2012 MGT Strategy Case Analysis: The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Cultural Viability I. Introduction The UFC, Ultimate Fighting Championship, belongs to the mixed martial arts industry. It is actually the largest MMA promotion company in the world. Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport. It allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques. There are numerous types of mixed martial arts including boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, karate, and taekwondo. II. General Environmental Analysis a. Technology Mixed martial arts have been around for a long time. It was first introduced in the original Olympic Games in Athens. In the beginning, fighters used a combination of Hellenic boxing a wrestling to fight. They could use any of their abilities until they had the other opponent knocked unconscious or surrender. There were no rules or guidelines to the fighting; it was all or nothing. Different combat sports evolved over the years into different areas of the world. This made the popularity of pakration decline. As time went on, rules and regulations were developed for the fighters and the technological advances helped this sport take off. b. ...There are a variety of sports in the world and the two that I find the most passion in are mixed martial arts and football. Despite that fact that the two seem to be very opposite of one another there are several similarities and differences between them. Over the years, the media has displayed controversial opinions towards martial arts and portrays it as being a barbaric sport for promoting violence. Standing on the sidelines and viewing martial arts at a UFC or TV standpoint, giving the benefit of the doubt, this is where most people judge the martial arts sport in comparison to football or any other. In reality, the two sports have an extreme amount of benefits and can also work hand in hand and produce positive outcomes for each team member. There is an "art" mentality in the mixed martial arts world. That art correlates to football as well as any other sport out there in such a way. The ability to train under an extreme amount of discipline, perseverance, mental focus as well as maintaining physical endurance pertains to both sports. Through jiu jitsu, team-mates learn valuable attributes such as respect, humility, and they also experience vast training under an extreme amount of fatigue, this strengthens the mind in its ability to focus in the most highest demands or extreme amount of pressure. In turn displays positive outcomes for both sports at hand. This ability holds advantages primarily for those who are less physically engaged or who seem small or weak at...

...when his head hit the mat. The stoppage has allowed him to avoid sustaining any more damage after having been knocked out and he will live to fight another day. Almost as long as there has been civilization there has been a dark and competitive side to mankind. This dark side is often what fuels our competitive nature, and causes the creation of almost gladiatorial like sports to test or strength and abilities against others. The roman’s had their gladiators, and in the modern age we have sports such as MMA. While there are a few sports whose all out brutality have caused them to be scrutinized by lawmakers and medical professionals none have had the uphill battle of mixed martial arts. Mixed martial arts, or MMA, are just as its name implies a mix of many styles of combat from the oriental martial arts to boxing, wrestling, and ju jit su, which is a form of submission grappling. And while MMA is a dangerous sport in its own right it is no more dangerous than the more widely accepted sports of boxing and professional...

You may choose a product or service offered by your employer or your own business, or one from another organization. Ultimately, to maximize your learning experience, choose a product or service brand that you have an interest in. Make sure there is information available about the industry and target market of the brand that you have selected. Think about why this brand needs an IMC Campaign—or why the existing campaign needs to be changed—what problem are you solving? Your name: Identify and describe the selected brand. UFC (Ultimate Fighting /championship). The UFC is a company that promotes MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights and events. Events take place in large public venues (mostly stadiums and arenas) and these events generally produce high viewership. While many events are televised on cable networks at no additional expense to fans, significant revenue is drawn from pay-per-view events. What brand problem are you attempting to solve with an IMC? I intend to discuss how the UFC can increase mainstream awareness and popularity to such an extent that it at least rivals the NFL (National...

...division than he belongs in, thus giving him an advantage in size. While losing 15 plus pounds in 48 hours or 30 pounds in a matter of a week may sound insane to the average person, this is a common trend for combat fighters. This hazardous practice known as weight cutting has been around since the beginning of contact sports. Weight cutting is a dangerous practice because it can lead to injuries, long-term physical and psychological effects, eating disorders and even death. Ultimately, weight cutting must be regulated to make it safer for the athletes involved since there is no evidence that links weight cutting with better athletic performance. Most people have never heard of the process of weight cutting, but it is common practice in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), wrestling, boxing, or in any type of sports where weight classes are involved. The process includes dehydrating the fighter's body to remove any water weight. Fighters will sit in saunas for hours, wear five jackets while sleeping to sweat the weight off, or even sit in a salt bath to remove water from the body (Huang). Weight cutting can lead to fighters losing more than twenty pounds and could shred as much as 13 percent of their body weight (Huang). Holly Holm, who fights in the 135-pound UFC female weight division, said she has a walk around weight of 155. She goes on to say that she is comfortable cutting ten pounds the day of the weigh-in (Huang). The two pictures below demonstrate what the process of weight cutting does...

Furthermore, when one walks into this gym, there’s a certain attitude all possess. Fight mode must be on when entering the gym and all worries and problems are left behind the door. Although there are many different individuals specializing in different areas of fighting, they all come for the same purpose and that is to better themselves as a fighter or condition their bodies, but most important to have more discipline and focus their careers as a future professional athlete. For one week, I spent time with one mixed martial arts fighter who goes by the name of Benji Gomez. His fighting name is The Brawler. Benji has been a wrestler for thirteen years and has focused on becoming a professional MMA fighter for four years now. Moreover, he is a three time state wrestling champion and former golden gloves champion and has an amateur MMA record of seven wins and one loss....

...The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Cultural Viability (Case 25) The following is a general environmental analysis of the ultimate fighting championship the business sector of the mixed martial art industry, with an analysis of UFC. The first section of this report will cover an overview of the trends in technology demographics, economics, political/legal, and social/cultural-global. Political/ Legal From the government side there always have been concerns for UFC for the safety of those who are involved in the sports because the first six UFC events had no time limits, no mandatory safety equipment and very few rules and also many observers assumed that “you’d have to have a death wish or at least be a little unhinged-to put yourself in that arena.” Which lead Senator John McCain started a campaign to ban the UFC; many agreed that the sport is too violent. Result of that the UFC is still illegal in the USA state for example New York, and lawsuits blocked it in other areas as well. Socio-cultural and Global UFC is becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the worlds. Many people around the world watching wrestling, and showing interest to this extreme form of sport. UFC start holding event globally, and “UFC programming reaches more than 416 million household worldwide via channels in Europe, Australia, South America, in Asia, middle east and also in North Africa.” which is why UFC is becoming popular around the world. The increasing number of audience around...

...Through-the-Legs Drill The through-the-legs drill is a great warm-up for wrestlers of all experience levels, but is helpful for beginning wrestlers who are just learning the basic penetration step. This drill is designed to help wrestlers focus on changing their level as they take their shot. If you are not familiar with the penetration step, check out How to Shoot in Wrestling. Grab a partner and you’re ready to go. Getting set: One wrestler stands with his legs slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, while the other wrestler starts facing him, in his stance, ready to shoot. There should be enough room to fit the shooting wrestler’s body as he goes through, so adjust your stance accordingly. Larger wrestlers may have trouble shooting though their partners’ legs; in this case, the wrestler should place one foot against a wall, allowing his partner much more room in which to perform the drill. Go!: On a coach’s command, the wrestler in his stance takes a shot in between his partner’s legs, focusing on changing levels and taking a deep step. Beginning wrestlers will have a tendency to shuffle through their partner’s legs on their knees, because this is the easiest route. Don’t get into this habit. Try to get through your partner’s legs using one big step. This is tricky at first, but in time it will seem effortless. It may help to place your hands on the mat as your shoot through, as well. Stand & repeat: Once you get through your partner’s legs, step up and face him (you...

...Tristan Jigo S. Abitona PE – D Sir Paul Andre A. Puertollano The Beauty of Martial Arts Long have we forgotten our individual culture’s basic traditions and ways of thinking. Through the years we humans have greatly evolved, changing our responsibilities from ploughing fields to paying for electricity. But even in this world run by electricity and technology, one human aspect still hasn’t changed: Fighting. It doesn’t matter what kind of fighting. Be it physical, mental, psychological, etc. Just to live properly at this age, means that we have to fight. Whether we fight for our pay checks, against time if we’re late, or against other cars wanting to take that one last parking space next to your favourite venue, it is still fighting. Watching this documentary about the art of Muay Thai has once again made me realize that Muay Thai (or any martial art for that matter) is hugely taken for granted. People do not realise that practicing an ancient form of art and disciplining yourself, with whatever personal reason, not only makes you into a better person but also brings forth a multitude of positive feelings and side effects. Gong-Prai Sorjintana, the 13-year-old boy from the town of Ayutthay, because of his current predicament, fights in the ring for a better future. One can argue that boys at such a young age should be doing other things like studying and playing. But our harsh reality has left Gon-Prai no other coice but to stop studying for a while and train daily to...

...Children Should Play Contact Sports Med Prep/ mod 3 The benefits of sports are immeasurable, participating in a sport, whether it is a contact sport or not can benefit a child in every aspect of their life. Participating in a sport keeps a child fit, reduces their stress, teaches them teamwork, gives them a skill, helps them learn how to socialize, builds their character, provides them with a constructive use of time, promotes good health, and boosts their self-confidence. Some people think contact sports are dangerous, but children cannot be protected from everything that presents a possible risk. Some children do get hurt in sports, but the vast majority of children who play sports will not have any long-lasting injury. Many other things are dangerous as well, such as riding in a car, risks present themselves every day, but not everything that is dangerous can be banned. The concept of children in organized collision based sport is to learn how to appropriately use their body in a safe and effective way. If you teach a young child to tackle they're far less likely to be injured than if you attempt to teach an eighteen year old to hit for the first time. As children play contact sports they are learning and growing in their skills that will benefit them later in life. Although there are risks to playing contact sports such as; fighting, concussion, possible long-term damage, and other serious injuries, the chance of most children suffering from these risks are low. Some...

Even before I started this school year, I had been training 4 days a week, learning about many different systems of martial arts. Good physical health means having muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and core strength. ------------------------------------------------- Muscular strength is the ability to exert maximum force. Muscular endurance is the ability to repeat a lift many times. Improving muscular strength and endurance makes completing daily tasks easier. If anyone ever needed help moving furniture, or any other heavy objects, I will be able to help because of the strength training I’ve done. Also, muscular strength and endurance gives obvious advantages in the martial arts, such as striking power, and the ability to overpower someone when grappling. In other words, if a...

...History of the UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship, a.k.a, UFC, is a very high intensity/somewhat dangerous sport, that has taken the entertainment world by storm. In this paper article, I will be talking about how this intense sport started, and I will be talking about the type of skills/martial arts that the competitors are highly trained in. Back in the mid 90,s is when this sport was not known by many, but had an underground fight club, meaning people signed up to fight in a cage with next to no rules. An anything goes match. (Bonandar,2013.) You can't accuse the early promotors of the UFC of failing to think big, in addition to extreme ideas like putting electric fences around the ring they fight in, or having live alligators swimming around in motes around the ring. Luckily, the doctors of the UFC were more practical in their thinking of how much harm this could cause the fighters. The UFC were "underground" until 1996, when a tape of one fight reached the desk of Arizona Senator and boxing fan, John McCain. He was not happy about what he saw on this tape he famously called it"Human Cockfighting"-John McCain. McCain sent letters to 50 states protesting against the sport and it worked. The UFC was practically shut down. (Bonandar,2013.) Until one of the entertainments most lucritive business deals were made. Casino billionaire brothers, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta bought the UFC for 2 million dollars in 2001. In three years, they were 34 million in the red. They got...
