Mom Contradictions

...unconditionally, but once in awhile she is a walking contradiction. Mom tends to do things that cause me to throw my arms up in disbelief. She possesses some impressive qualities from her bravery and intelligence to her overpowering love. Unfortunately, she has some less than desirable qualities, especially her tedious anxiety, her questionable common sense, and her obsessive-compulsive behavior. One of my mom’s contradictions is how she can be both brave yet anxious. When she was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, my family panicked; if we lost her we would always be broken. However, Mom held us together like she always does, and we somehow made it through worry and treatments with only a few breakdowns and occasional tears. She is also braver than the rest of us when it comes to social interaction. Mom is the outgoing one in our family...

The Single Mom

...The Single Mom NURS 440 April 26, 2015 Deanna Radford There are a lot of assumptions out there about single parents and particularly single moms. For example, there are people who believe that most single moms choose to raise their kids solo, are unemployed, and receive government assistance. While every story is different, most don’t support these assumptions. Once largely limited to poor women and minorities, single motherhood is now becoming the new “norm”. This prevalence is due in part to the growing trend of children born outside marriage, a societal trend that was virtually unheard of decades ago. When you examine U.S. Census data, the actual single parent statistics may surprise you. Single Parents by the Numbers According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 22 million children. This number represents approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U. S. today. Despite negative assumptions that most single moms “selfishly” chose to raise their kids solo, the majority of individuals raising children alone started out in committed relationships and never expected to be single parents. Of all single-parent families in the U.S., single mothers make up the majority. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, out of about 12 million single parent families in 2014, more that 80% were headed by single mothers. Today...

Teen Moms

...Daiejha Wilson 5-6-2014 Dr. Navare Teen Moms Being a teen mom is definitely not an easy task. Teen pregnancy is the number one reason why teen girls drop out of school. Many teenage girls begin to lose or forget about their dreams of ever finishing high school and going to college, and focus mainly on taking care of their babies. Without support and help from others, these girls are forced to end their education, to take care of their children. Statistics show that only about one-third of teen moms will graduate high school and a little over one percent of these mothers will receive a college degree before the age of 30. Becoming a teen mom should not stop a young woman from continuing with school. Therefore, many support systems, such as affordable childcare, support groups, public assistance, etc., should be implemented in their communities. Becoming a parent at a young age can alter a teen’s life tremendously. For most teenage mothers, school, let alone college are most likely the last things that are on their minds. They are worried about how they are going to take care and provide for their child. Many teen moms have no one to help them, they are basically on their own. Some have the desire to finish high school and attend college, but without the help and support it is almost impossible for them to do so. These mothers should be able to further their education just like the rest of their peers. However, teen moms have many factors in the way, such as not enough affordable...

...Intro With Country Music’s rise in popularity, it is important to note some of the most relevant changes in the music being produced in the genre. This industry is relatively new to the music scene and only began in the 1920s. Since its debut in the music world, Country Music has changed throughout the decades and evolved into what is now known as, “Sixth Generation” Country Music. The most noted difference, becoming more apparent as the genre has progressed, is the themes in the music. Country Music is most famous for telling stories of faith, patriotism, love, sorrow, and of the common workingman. However, the genre is seeing a change in the recent music being produced. It is becoming apparent that lyricists are moving away from the traditional themes of Country Music and introducing its new style, called, “Bro-Country.” This style is defined as contatining lyrics about pretty girls, trucks, beer, alcohol that leads to sex, and scantly dressed women. According to Neff, “…objectification, was the main form of sexism in country music.” According to Rogers, “Most people would assume that country is less sexist or has the least detrimental type of sexism within its lyrical content. However, one might also argue that it is more dangerous when sexism is buried within the lyrics. People might think this is “quality” music on the surface and really take the lyrics seriously. The idea that this is wholesome music is really what makes it necessary to study the...

Your Mom

...there. I felt like I was doing the same thing every day. So eventually I decided to not do my work. After a while the teacher decided to put me behind a small wall secluded from the class. It was a couple of weeks before I decided I did not want to go to school any more. Then my mom found out what the teacher was doing, it did not go over well. I’m pretty sure the principle was scared shit less. Needless to say I was not behind the wall any more. I can say I had good friends while I went there. One day I had a major migraine, everyone thought I was just faking it but one of my friends decided to walk me to the nurse. At the time the teacher was not in the class room, but on the way to the nurse she told us to go back. I don’t remember much after that. A couple of years later we had a new school in Wellsville. Same teachers unfortunately and the same principle, I was always told that he did not like kids. I had been late a lot due to the school being in a new area, walking there was the only choice I had. Apparently the teacher thought it would be a good idea to lock the door to the class room. So when I got there I could not get in and she would not let me in, so I went home. Then again my mom found out and the school had their hands full. If I remember right the teacher almost lost her job. The best year of my life was when I moved to Olathe and started at a new...

Teen Mom

...Teen pregnancy When it comes to teen pregnancy, there is no stereotype. Some teens can be persuaded into waiting. Others will have an opinion about sex and not change their minds for anyone. All teens have their own opinions about everything that they do and don't do. One teen might be the result of a teenage pregnancy and choose to wait. On the other hand, they might think that it is no big deal. Being a teen mom myself opened my eyes to many things. I got pregnant, partially out of choice - I thought that a baby would bring me and my fiancé closer together. It was mostly an accident though. There was nothing that my parents or anyone else could have said to stop me from having sex. I was engaged to the man of my dreams and gave myself to him entirely. Sometimes, the teen parents stay together, but unfortunately, as in my case, they often do not. The father of my child was just as excited and was looking forward to the birth of our son, just as much as I was. We had many plans for the future. We had already known each other for approximately four years, dated for around three years, and were engaged for a little over two years, before my baby was born. Everything was going great. Our love was only strengthened by my pregnancy. Once we found out that I was having a boy, the father was even more excited. He now lives in Nebraska, with his girlfriend of three months. He has only seen his son two times, since he was born. He was also called three times. It is so difficult...

Mr. Mom

...Reginia Lanes Dr. Graham English 105 14 April 2013 Mr. Mom As I sat through frustration of rush hour traffic, I received a text message from my best friend who is a male. The text message read “What’s a good age to start wearing tampons?” My sarcasm immediately kicked in and I almost replied back “Whenever you think you’re ready.” However knowing this is probably another one of those sensitive subjects for him concerning his daughter, whom he has raised alone since soon after her birth, I figured I better answer seriously. I responded “Whenever she’s comfortable.” As usual he replied “Ok, Just thought I’d ask.” You see my friend is one of the many men that have challenged the stereotype that has been placed upon them of being absentee or dead beat fathers once their relationship ends with the mothers. This is proving to no longer be status quo. You see I have several male friends who are raising their children, mostly girls, alone. Thus we now have a growing number of “absentee or deadbeat” mothers in our society. According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there is a significant rise in the number of single fathers raising kids. Specifically, the census data shows that the rise in families led by single fathers has outpaced the rise in single-mother families for the first time since 1970. Today, there is an increase of 14 percent of single-dad households. The number of single-mother households only increased by roughly 3.2 percent in the past 10 years. Gone are...
