Award winning actor Morgan Freeman resides in the small town of Charleston, Mississippi. This small town is plagued by racism and segregation. It is hard to believe that even in the twenty first century there are people still facing these issues. The high school in Charleston does not sponsor the senior prom and as a result the parents do. The only problem is that the parents do not host one prom for all of the seniors, instead there are two proms each year. There is a prom for the white students and a second prom for the colored students. Upon speaking with the students Freeman learned that it is not the desire of the students to have these segregated proms it is the desire of the parents. Freeman offered to fund the prom with the requirement that it be an integrated prom. I am about the same age as the students featured in the film, one major difference between us being that I was raised in the north and they in the south. My high school was not incredibly diverse, but we did have some diversity. For the most part I feel we all interacted together with no regard to our different races. There most certainly were groups that were predominantly Hispanic, African American, White, and Asian that stuck together. But, the individuals in these groups also socialized beyond their racially similar groups. I had one group of friends in high school that was very diverse I was the white girl, we had a Latina, an African-American male and a Pilipino male to name a few. I believe that had my high school suggested separate proms there would have been an uproar from students, however in Charleston proms had always been separate so I understand why there was seemingly a lack of
