There were no iPhones, Google, or Google maps to tell people what happened or where it happened. Most information was passed orally or by scribes. Historians such as the Deuteronomistic History (DtrH), Herodotus and Thucydides were around to explain the events around them. All three of these historians are similar and different in the content of their stories and they way they told them. They are similar because they all helped to give accounts of what was said and done during the time period that they are writing about; for DtrH that time period was the 6th century fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile while for Thucydides it was the Peloponnesian war, and Herodotus the 5th century origins of the Greco- Persian wars. As similar as they are, they also share differences. Herodotus on is known as the “Father of lies,” while Thucydides is known for “setting a standard for scope, concision, and accuracy,” and DtrH is known as “not just a historian, but an author, adapting, arranging and creating material.” All three authors, DtrH, Herdotus, and Thucydides make use of speeches and rhetorical motifs to explain history as they saw it.
