Which Essay Is Better: a Narrative or a Descriptive?

...Which Essay is Better: A Narrative or A Descriptive?   Ever read a story and say to yourself, “What’s happening?” Whenever I read a descriptive essay, that’s what I would say. In this essay I would be comparing and contrasting two types of essays, a narrative and descriptive. I have chosen “Are the rich happy?” by Stephen Leacock 1916 and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, n.d. By writing my essay, I want to give my views on each and decide which I would rather write. Narrative Essay A narrative essay reflects a personal opinion that is based on your own experiences. This helps you bring a reader into your very own mind and shows him/her the topic you’re writing about through your eyes. Telling a story or event the way it happened for you. It also could provide a sort of lesson or moral to be learned from the outcome of the story as well as what the writer did that contributed to it or not. It’s more on a personal level that any one reading could say that happened to them or that they learned from the story by not doing whatever it was that the writer did. In Stephen Leacock’s “Are the Rich Happy?” the author writes about his experiences with his friends, with of modest income. Most of it, all in his opinion, points out the problems or troubles those with an existential amount of funds in their bank accounts. He goes on to give some examples that he encountered several of his friends going through. “A friend of mine who has ten thousand dollars a year told me the other...

Proofreading And Editing Analysis

...Proofreading and Editing is really important to make an essay strong and not difficult to understand. Proofreading always comes last when editing an essay to catch errors and to take of any unnecessary parts. Grammar and punctuations is really important when it comes to re reading an essay. It is very easy to make a silly mistake while typing in a hurry. At times when typing an essay it might sound correctly, but when re reading you catch many errors. I have learned that grammar and punctuation is really important not just for writing essays, but also for job applications, job resumes, job requirements, etc. You can avoid misunderstand your reader if the essay is confusing because of grammar mistakes. Business School Application Essay

...Contribution and Diversity Questions Your background, experiences, and values will enhance and diversify Kellogg. How? (1-2 double-spaced pages) The Darden School seeks a diverse and unique entering class of future managers. How will your distinctiveness enrich our learning environment and enhance your prospects for success as a manager? Every essay question on the admissions application is geared toward the same thing. Committee members want to find out who you are, what makes you different from everyone else, and how you will contribute to the school if accepted. This question asks these things outright. Because it asks so directly what the admissions committee wants to know, this is one of the most common questions you will find. The question has a structure similar to the Why M.B.A.? question. It asks both Why us? and Why you? However, the nature of this question lends itself to a more personal response. Whereas the Why M.B.A.? question asks what you have done, what you want to do, and how that relates to the school, this question asks about who you are and how it relates to the school. The Why M.B.A.? question asks about your experiences, and this question asks about your qualities. Just as you brainstormed about your experiences, actions, and goals for the first question, brainstorm about your qualities and characteristics for this one. What sets you apart from everyone else? What words do friends and family use to describe you? For some people, the focus...

Desire Satisfaction Theory

...desires. It also states that something is good for you if it only helps you achieve those desires and nothing else. In order to prove my thesis, I will discuss an important episode in my life that will certainly aid my argument. Next, I will explain why this particular theory is attractive, followed by a possible objection that considers the desire satisfaction theory to be incorrect and counter the objection. To start, about a year ago in my freshman year in college, I was enrolled in English 101. We had a very important essay due soon and it had to be over six pages. I had very little time and did not know what to do. I also wanted to make a good grade to start out strong in the class. However, since it was one of the first essays in the semester, the professor did not require us to use safe assign, which basically checks papers for plagiarism. I really thought about going online a copying someone else’s work. Then of course I knew that eventually the papers would have to be submitted electronically because we had to make a portfolio for the final in that class. Eventually I decided to write the essay myself and put my best effort into it. In the end, I made an A on that paper as well as the final portfolio. The desire satisfaction theory goes hand in hand with the decision that I had made. As stated previously, the theory suggests that whatever helps one achieve his/her desires, is good and one should definitely do it. If it does not help one achieve his or her desires, then...

Personal Narrative: Hip Hop Music And Culture

...of reasons, most of which because I was excited to learn about how I, a white woman, fit in to the hip hop industry and culture. I have always loved hip hop music, and have written several songs for my friends to perform. I’ve always felt guilty about this though, feeling that I was using an art form from a culture that I don’t belong to for my own enjoyment-appropriating it, which is not ok. Since this is only my first quarter at Fairhaven, I wrote some goals before classes began in September. I have a very clear vision of what I want to do when I graduate college which I have had for several years, however I have found that in some of the classes I took in previous years in high school, and at Running Start, that I would try to angle whatever class I was taking at the time to fit the needs of what I would like to be learning. This kept the cap screwed pretty tight on the bottle of things I could have been learning instead, and as a freshman it’s important for me to remember that there are many roads I could take to get to my someday goal, and that by having tunnel vision I miss a lot of really interesting things....

Writing Is Hard

...have trouble writing about anything. The main reason why I have so much trouble when writing, is because I don't concentrate on my work enough. Even when I try my hardest to concentrate, my mind seems to wonder around to a different direction towards another thought. After that, I forget all about my work and just think about various things such as people, places, and different times I've had in the past. For example, even while I'm writing this small paragraph, my mind keeps on slipping into other thoughts. I dont know if this happens to lots of people, but this is one problem that I have trouble the most in. Maybe this is why I'm a slow writer and don't like to write. When I write, I'm usually in my house sitting right where my computer is. One thing about me is that I hate writing anything with a pen and a paper. Most of the time when writing an essay, report, or anything else, I type it on my computer. I can probably type 50 times faster than writing by hand. I guess it's just something that I'm better at. I can type about 80-85 words per minute. If that isn't fast, then I dont know what is. When writing, I can write when it's quiet, loud, during the day, during the night, and during whatever atmosphere I'm in. Even if the whole house is quiet, I usually listen to music while typing an essay. However, the best time and the best atmosphere for me to write anything would be during late at night when everything seems pretty...

English 120 Research Paper

...Final Reflection My main aim in enrolling in the English 120 online course was to improve my writing skills. I strongly believe that I have achieved that purpose. While comparing the first draft of my Essay#1 to how I tackle an essay on the same topic now, I can see the almost meteoric improvement that I have achieved so far.In addition, I am proud of the skills I have learnt from this course. In fact, I believe that my achievements so far have superseded my expectations. I hope that whatever I have learnt in this course will form the basis for future improvements, and I will be able to make further strides in creative and scientific writing. While taking the English 120 online course, my attitude towards reading as well as writing has transformed drastically. For instance, after taking the course, I have learnt to look at issues in depth, instead of dealing with them superficially. In addition, the course has instilled in me a healthy appetite for reading and doing extensive research on a specific topic. Moreover, after the course, I have also started to read more in order to improve my vocabulary. I believe that this will help in my future endeavors....

Horrible Essay Writer

...at essays! Throughout my education career I have had a difficult time writing papers, whether it was a creative writing story or a research paper. But as I struggled through every essay in English class I was able to learn a great deal of tips to help me through every mistake I made along the way, which helped me some but still, I felt lost. I have always dreaded having to write essays in English classes because I knew it would most likely only hurt my grade, but all of that changed once I found a teacher who I could open up to and who genuinely cared about me succeeding in her class. I then went from having no confidence in any of my essays, to having a smile on my face when I received them back with an A on the front. I may have struggled when it came to how to construct an essay and how to make it flow, but by the time I finished Mrs. Wiley’s class my junior year all of that changed for me. All right so now I guess the secrets out! Although I may be a good writer now, lets start back at the beginning. As I use to sit there at my desk while the teacher was handing out the rubric for the next writing assignment my hands would start to sweat and the nerves would start to kick in. All I could do was stare at my laptop not knowing where to even start. The only thing that had ever stuck with me is to use the correct punctuation that everyone had learned in the 2nd grade and always, always, always make sure you use MLA format. From there I would just start typing whatever had...

My Paper

...Compare and Contrast Paragraphs I do not think have any terms to define. I will try my best to write what rent means and the write what buy means. Although I know that everybody already knows what they mean. Rent is where you pay a certain amount of money every month for the use of the property. Buy means to acquire by payment. So when you are renting something you paying to use it, when you are buying something it is yours to keep so to speak. I do believe that those are really the only two terms that I will have to define. Yes I will be using compare and contrast paragraphs. I will be comparing the same benefits between buying a house and renting an apartment. There are not many similarities between the two. The only thing I can think that would be the same would be the fact they both supply a roof over your head. When comparing these two I will have to look for some similarities between the both. The contrasting part of the essay will not be that hard. There a lot of differences between renting and buying a home. This part will be easy to do. The hardest part will be comparing the two. I will be contrasting the difference between renting and buying a house. When you rent there are things that you can technically get by with. When you buy the more things that you have do and there are certain things that you can do. When you rent there are certain thing that you cannot do. Which when you rent there are all kinds of rules that you have follow set by your landlord. When you...

Writing

...The writing process begins the minute you get a writing assignment—whether you are writing a book, an essay, or a single paragraph. It involves all the activities you do, from choosing a topic to turning in a final draft. The phases, or stages, of the writing process are prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Prewriting Prewriting refers to all activities that help you explore a subject, generate ideas about it, choose a specific topic, establish a purpose, and analyze the audience for your paragraph or essay. Your mission at this stage is to stimulate your thinking before and during the act of writing. Every time you think of a new idea during the writing process, you are prewriting. Drafting When you have lots of ideas to work with, you are ready to start drafting. Drafting involves writing down your thoughts, developing or expanding some ideas, organizing your thoughts to reflect your purpose, and writing a first version of your paragraph or essay. To start on your draft, you may want to spread out your class notes, journal entries, and other prewriting notes so that you can start to string your ideas together. This is the time to keep your thoughts flowing without worrying too much about grammar, punctuation, mechanics, or spelling. Revising As you may suspect, the process of writing is not finished with your first draft. You should always revise your work to make it stronger and better. Revising involves rethinking your content and organization so that your writing...

Why do you think that this kind of thing happens? How many people do you know that have went to college and can honestly say that they are still working in general to graduate? Personally, there are not many people that I know who have graduated from a college which is why we see most people going back to school after so many years. There can be many reasons why a person does not finish school the first time around. May it be because of money issues, their interest were elsewhere at the time, a change in career directed their focus elsewhere, but whatever that may be it happens more than we would like to think. I just so happen to fall into this category of people going back to school after I had been once before but never finished. Throughout this essay I will inform readers on why I am returning back to school, my purpose behind it all, obstacles that have gotten in my way because I am returning and my ambitions that drove me to even consider going back to school. Theo104 Does the Bible Have Authority

...THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay Title Page 1 THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay Michelle A. Woycitzky Liberty University THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay 2 I. Introduction To define yourself as a Christian is to believe in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the text of the Holy Bible. Many believers think that this is all it takes to be welcomed into Heaven and enjoy the afterlife in peaceful bliss with their maker. Much of what has been learned in this class these past two months has given me the opportunity to explore Christianity beyond face value, as it should be explored. The true model Christian delves into the inner workings of the scripture and promotes the promises made by God when one lives their life as a messenger of that scripture. Education is the only way to make a person aware of what it truly means to be a Christian. In reflecting on the concepts learned in this class, a series of questions were presented, three chosen, then answered on the basis of what I have learned. The first question I chose was, Does the Bible have authority? Through the Doctrine of the Bible and arguments that the Bible is the Word of God, this question will be answered along with the information in Towns book. Secondly, I chose, Why are personal testimonies important in sharing the gospel? This topic was of great interest to me because I am capable of explaining it...
