...Putting Thoughts to Paper For several years in school, I dreaded writing academic papers because I found many of the topics monotonous, provoking little desire in me to work hard. The writing process intimidated me because I was often unaware as to where I should begin a paper and once I did, how I should develop my thoughts in an effective manner. My appreciation of writing, both academically and artistically, did not surface until my sophomore year in high school. When I transferred from public to private school, I realized that my writing skills were not as strongly developed as many of my fellow classmates. This feeling of inadequacy motivated me to seek help from my teachers and peers. By the end of first semester sophomore year, my...

...The Phases Of A Turtle In High School "My favorite animal is the turtle. The reason is that in order for the turtle to move, it has to stick its neck out. There are going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick your neck out. There will be challenges and instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them." I'd say this quote best described our "first day of High School jitters" four years ago when we entered into the next phase of our lives, otherwise known as Bethlehem Catholic. Like a turtle, we began our freshman year inside of our shells. None of us knew what to expect in High School besides the rumor of "the pool on the third floor". All of the girls walked into homeroom with skirts that reached their knees and the boys were all cleanly shaven (if they even had facial hair yet). That first day was crucial for the rest of high school because it determined what clique you were a part of, what classes you would take for your next four years, and what your peers would think of you....

...difficulty spelling. Although, my reading retention was very good, which made me somewhat of a mystery for the teachers. As I progressed, I mastered spelling— for the most part. My spelling got exceptionally good when I was given a computer because then, whatever word I had in my head, the computer knew how to spell it; we became the best of friends. In early high school, I was confident in my writing, but I knew I had not mastered it: My main struggle with writing was sentence fragments. Essentially, the content was there but the grammatical structure wasn’t. Despite these struggles, I made it into the Advanced English class sophomore year, Advanced Placement Language junior year, and Advanced Placement Literature my senior year. Going into senior year, I had made impressive grades and had a few of my pieces published in school newspapers. Needless to say, I was feeling confident as ever. Unfortunately, I wrote my first literary analysis paper and I got a C. I was shocked at first, mostly because I had never gotten a C on anything in my entire life—except almost in phys ed one time, which my mother never lets me forget. Anyways, at that point I was, to say the least, pissed. The next class, I met with Mr....

...My experiences in high school are my most vivid of memories when it comes to reading, writing, and communicating. My freshman year of high school I had an English teacher that had a big personality and made English class interesting and often unpredictable. She would break out into a song or dance in order to explain things such as a hyperbole. She was the first teacher to peak my interest in reading and writing. Sophomore year was also a turning point for my writing because I had to write a lengthy research paper on Macbeth by William Shakespeare. I learned that I have trouble staying focused on my thesis at times and my wording can often be awkward. I was thankful that quite a bit of drafting was involved and my final paper was a huge improvement. Junior year was a great year for my interest in reading because I read East of Eden by John Steinbeck, which was a great book. Reading East of Eden made me realize how important annotating is and that rereading the text may be necessary if you did not pick up a good understanding the first time around. Senior year was an interesting one because of my expository reading and writing class. One of the hardest things I did was writing a group essay. We were in a group before we started the essay then when we started to draft we discovered we had different opinions on the topic. Communication was key and we had to figure out a compromise so that we could all get our point across. High school had a huge contribution to my literacy narrative...

...Looking back on my introspection about my fellow batch mates in high school, I have been in contact with them for the past months and we kept on reminiscing the days on how we would like our future be especially on our career paths. From almost 20 persons that I have in contact with, only two of them was able to graduate from college. Some had dropped out and some are still in college shifting courses just like me. So I decided to make a survey research regarding students in colleges on how passionate they are in the course they took up. I have delimited my research to students of the same course that I am taking to target a specific population and validity. Despite the problem of having many legal management students shifting courses, they take easy courses to graduate on time. As a current student and had been enrolled in legal management course in FEU, questions had bewildered myself if I had took the right path and made a right decision to take this course hence where will this lead me after I graduated from the course? There were instances in my college years that I opted or imagined to shift course for that matter because of the fear of the unknown. I am an irregular 3rd year student and I had witness some of my friends or almost of my friends if I may say had graduated from the courses they took and for my fellow legal management batch mates who if not shifted had graduated from this course but didn’t landed on a good job. The purpose of my research is to know the different...

...A few days ago, I turned in my research argument essay for my English 101 class. In my paper, I argued that the DREAM Act (an act that would allow many undocumented individuals the chance to become citizens) should be passed. I read at least 10 articles on the topic and even watched a documentary. I received two things from this assignment, a perfect score and a realization. When I was five years old, I came to the United States illegally. I obviously didn’t know that I was breaking the law, but more importantly, I didn’t know my limitations. As a result of not knowing my limits, I was able to do and accomplish many things. When I was younger, my teachers would always say, “the sky's the limit” or something along the lines of “you can do...

...the end of my sophomore year, I have been ready to go to college. Of course, that feeling of being ready grew much stronger throughout the end of my high school career. Junior year was definitely the year where I started preparing for the process of being able to apply to college. Academically, junior year was one of my best years in which I was under so much stress due to tests, SAT, speech, and research papers. I have always been organized with my school work and the way I handle my time. Now that I am in senior year, with about 47 days left of school days, I am more than ready to make a new life for myself, and call New Orleans my new home. I have been told by every single person I know that has gone to college, that it is a completely new life from that of the one we, high school students, are used to. For starters, one is completely independent in every possible way during this journey. Cleaning my room, washing my clothes, cooking dinner, and even getting my homework done in time, will all be up to me. I will not have my parents over my shoulder telling me to do this or that. Personally for me is a complete relief. Being almost nineteen years old, I know the difference between being responsible and inresponsable. I am fully prepared for pulling all nighters, going grocery shopping, washing my clothes, and getting up every...

...writing and reading because some years I liked to read and write but other years I didn’t like it. I liked reading short stories, poems, and nonfiction books but I didn’t like historical stories, research, or long books. I’ve never a finished a book until high school because I never found a book I liked considering I never tried since I didn’t have an interest in reading. Although, now I can say I like to read if I find the right book when i use to say that i hated reading. The youngest I remember writing was in 6th grade when I would write letters to my dad. I wrote letters to my dad after my parents got divorced since I didn’t get to see my dad from it. My letters would be about how much I missed him, how school was going, and how things were different. I wrote...

...semester I was very confident in the direction of my future. I had everything planned: complete a degree in Communication Disorders, enroll in the Speech and Language pathologist program here at Valdosta State University, and return to my hometown and work in the school system. Then I was given an assignment in English requiring me to research and write about my community, or group of people that share a similar interest or career. It changed everything I thought I knew about my career choice. I began English 1102 thinking this would be a class I would use to slightly improve my composition skills, and yet it has influenced more than my writing. It has pointed my future in an exhilarating new direction. Novelty isn’t really my...

...Introduction The shot of the reverberating gun shot as I had taken my first few strides out on the course had given me the chills. My heart had pounded as fast as it had never pounded before, and that was when I instantly knew that I was a runner. I wasn't quite gifted in running as I had thought the others were, at that age, but as I grew more passionate for the sport I began to surpass others throughout the years. I had gone from basically being the slowest person on my team in the fourth grade to the second fastest on my team in eighth grade. This had pushed me to desire to strive for greatness step by step; by my freshman year I had entered into high school on a varsity level which had caught me by surprise. From now and then, I have developed into a student that has become known around school for running. I have reached my barrier of improving my running, and need some way to advance my running strategy and improve my time. My interest in the advancement of strategies in running, were triggered when I had first heard that math can be applicable during a race this year. To explain further, I had decided to do my investigation on running because I have been running since I was six years old, and have participated in both cross country and track for years. I am passionate about running and would even consider taking the challenge to a new level of even participating in cross country in college. Running has been a part of my life forever and I’m always up to the challenge of improving...

...1. Everyone has goals but execution is one of the top priorities other than planning. I’ve never been in a situation where I hadn’t had all my goals set forth, however I can give an example of how this can be portrayed when lurking to achieve at one time. The first things are identifying, making sure you do your homework on certain ways to achieving this, it may sound simple but honestly it isn’t. There is always a millimeter left out of something, you wouldn’t want to have lack of clarity on the purpose of a presentation. A presentation can have five ways in including goals, Informing, entertaining, being persuasive, to inspire and to instruct. I would write all of this on a piece of paper and jot down the different logs. 2. I’d use employment trends for college students. How I would research is as follows. First I would research the career aspirations if there are 100 college sophomores (females and males) in the room how many are pursuing a career in Business Administration (Accounting, Finance, management or business owner, proprietor). If out of the 100 students 30 males and 40 females decides to pursue a career in business. I would then research how many students will find a job right after graduation. 3. Say for instance the target audience is a cleaning service ran by women only and the discussion is about new household cleaning products that will hit markets. The main part of the analysis is the women. They will want something safe and harmless towards family...

...some while being threatening and intimidating for others. Throughout my academic career, I have learned a great deal about writing. Starting from grade school all the way up until college, writing has been a fundamental part of my life. I have come to learn that from all my experiences and influences, I have been shaped into a descriptive writer. My strength in writing has always come from describing a situation in as much detail as I can. This shaping of mine has been characterized by certain events and certain people in my life, and it has helped give an identity of what type of writer I am and what type of student I am. In order to develop into an adequate writer with an identity for yourself, one must have been educated a certain way. For me, there was one person in particular that helped turn me into a comfortable descriptive writer. In my sophomore year of high school, my English 2 teachers’ name was Jeannette Maldonado. She, like many of her other peers, was a first year teacher, and I did not expect to get an adequate grasp of writing and literature because of her inexperience. However, Ms Maldonado turned out to be a major turning point in my writing life, as she would not only challenge her students on assignments, but would give constructive criticism and work with you to help develop your ideas. Up until that point, I had been just an average writer and really did not give much consent on improving my writing skills since the instructors that I had prior to her class...

...As an ignorant 8-year-old, I was sick to the stomach with the thought of having to move from California to Florida. I would be leaving my friends, school, and the only house I could remember living in. I loved that house on Princeton Street in Santa Monica, but as my dad showed me our new, typical suburban home in Orlando I became very excited. Feelings of happiness and excitement flourished over me because there was a bright–blue pool and extensive backyard waiting for me in Florida. My family was optimistic about the move and I was ecstatic about my new house. At the time, everything in my family’s life seemed to be going well. However, no one in my family was expecting for our innocent, beautiful home on the corner of a cul-de-sac to become a financial burden that would affect my dad till this day....
