He was an untutored mathematician from Kerala, and preceded Newton and Liebnitz by a century. ...The question is “Who are the notable African Americans who have earned Ph.D.s in mathematics?” Would researching the answer be significant? Is it important in the science of mathematics to investigate whether five Ph.D.s awarded to five African Americans between 1925 and 2000 imparts enough impact to the field to fill the gap in the canon of mathematics and history? My intention with this paper is to offer the reader the opportunity to consider the field of mathematics in which five individuals have made and are making contributions, while at the same time suggesting that their path to their achievements were unusual. The first section of this paper is a summary of these five. The second section is concise and provides an overview of how many math Ph.D.s, were awarded to African Americans during that same period. The next two sections examine the contributions and mathematical achievements in general and the barriers and psychology that perhaps has created a dismal increase in underrepresented populations entering the field. The final section highlights the importance and implication of stagnate educational pipelines. In addition, I would like to stretch the mind to consider educational practices, as we know them now and to urge the reader to, bear in mind that in the 21st century, we need the talents, contributions and resources of all citizens in United States. ...Influences that Affect Women of Color in STEM Disciplines Past research studies assessed the influences that hindered underrepresented students of color to reach educational achievement in the STEM fields (Gordon & Bridglall, 2004; Maltese & Tai, 2011; Washington, 2011; Whalen & Shelley, 2010). The literature review indicated significant obstacles facing this population. Obstacles included mediocre academic preparation and encouragement targeted at underrepresented students of color from both the secondary school and collegiate institution levels. In order for the U.S. to compete globally, past research studies proved additional efforts must be made to help close the diversity and gender gap within the STEM fields. National STEM Enrollment and Retention Trends In the U.S., the total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded annually had nearly tripled over the past 40 years, but awarded STEM degrees had not. The U.S. continued to award fewer STEM degrees each year compared to other countries worldwide (Maltese & Tai, 2011). ...History of Women in Science Women have continually played a part in scientific endeavor, even prior to invention of the term ‘scientist’. Nevertheless, in Western culture, science and femininity lacked unity and the masculine painting of science revealed not only that more males did science, but that science itself was seen as an integrally masculine venture. The notion that mathematics and science were unsuitable or ‘hard’ for women, and even ‘at odds’ with real femininity, can be trailed back to the beginning of modern science and the commencement of the Royal Society in the seventeenth century. Then ‘femininity’ became the exact opposite of the new, masculine, experimental science of Newton and his colleagues who needed to break from the passive, reflective analytical style of outdated ‘natural philosophy’, the former word for science. (Schiebinger, 1996). This divide that detached women from the new experimental science, was made a lot wider by the Nature’s tradition being embodied in female form only. The masculine scientists made ‘mother nature’ their goal of research, and branded her as a female muse who could trick them, but if trained would also permit them to ‘enter her secrets’.
