...May 10, 2014 Home Sweet Home Everyday individuals are often forced to mature too quickly because of their environmental surroundings. The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, is an example of how a society has the ability to directly impact young lives, in turn creating necessary "rites of passage." Through her environment, Esperanza, one of the many girls living on Mango Street, learns how to survive in a world full the unknown. Some may believe that the setting for this novel has no bearing on young Esperanza; however, Esperanza's character and transition into adulthood are dramatically defined by her own surroundings and neighborhood. Sandra Cisernos's The House on Mango Street portrays the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. She has a vision of what her dream home should look like. She dreams of a house with a large beautiful backyard, real staircase, more than one bathroom, and just a house that she is overall proud to live in. Her house on Mango Street is the complete opposite to her dreams. It was a small red house, with just one washroom, no private backyard or green lawns. Esperanza is clear that her house on Mango Street is not what she wants. More importantly through the process of finding herself she is able to put together a meaning of what it is like to feel "at home." Esperanza believes that to feel "at home" a person is comfortable, relaxed and at ease in their home. By the end of the book she does not find the home of her dreams...

...day labor worker when he first arrived in the country, however he has had steady work from Blasco Martinez who owns a gardening business which he tries to convince Carlos to buy from him as he says he is moving. The idea of being self employed is very appealing to Carlos but he knows he can never afford to do so and the risk of getting caught and deported is very high. Carlos has a son Luis who is reluctant to go to school on a daily basis and gets into trouble as he is influenced by his friends who are part of the South Central gang life style. Carlos and his wife came from Jalisco which is a state in Mexico which is primarily made up of several small villages where "Charros" or Mexican cowboys would get married and head north to start a new life in America. Carlos believed that life in America would be simple in which if you worked hard opportunities would present themselves and you could be happy, that unfortunately was not the case and Carlos's wife ended up leaving him alone with their young son Luis. The main difficulties that Carlos and Luis face are that they live in a rough neighborhood in south central Los Angeles and even though Carlos has what seems to be a steady job with Blasco, Carlos is unable to save up the money needed to move to a better location. The biggest obstacle Carlos faces is when in an effort to become self employed and borrowing twelve thousand dollars from his sister to purchase the business from Blasco, Carlos gets his newly purchased truck stolen...

...The decision to purchase a new home is a major decision and should not be taken lightly. When using the term new home, we will consider new, site built homes. When one considers that this home will more than likely be the dwelling place for the buyer for the remainder of their life, it places even more significance on the decision. There are many things that should be considered and many things than can affect that decision before a final choice is made. One of the first considerations when deciding to purchase a new home is the cost and how that cost will affect the supply and demand for new homes. The higher the cost of new homes, the lower the demand for new homes will be. Factors that affect the cost would be the number of sellers and the number of buyers. The greater the number of sellers of new homes in a neighborhood, the lower the cost of a new home in that neighborhood. If there are numerous sites for new houses for sale in a neighbor of relative size and features, due to competition, the lower the cost of a new home will be. This follows the law of supply and demand. If there are a limited number of sites available and numerous buyers seeking a new home in the neighborhood, the higher the cost will be. Each potential buyer would be willing to pay a higher cost to obtain the house of their choice. This also follows the law of supply and demand. When the supply of a good rises (falls), the cost for that good falls (rises). When the demand for a good rises (falls)...

...of Newark, New Jersey and operated by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. EWR was the first major airport in the United Stated and first with a control tower located approximately 15 miles from Manhattan, New York. It was established in 1928 after Mayor Thomas Lynch Raymond had a vision after Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 successful flight across the Atlantic Ocean. After such an experience, Mayor Raymond realized the potential an airport could bring to the city in conjunction with the already established railroad and sea port systems in the Newark geographical area. Construction began in 1927 and at the time of the project Newark Metropolitan incorporated the latest technological innovations for safe travel. Ford (2008) stated, The plans, which required diversion of three streams, provided for numerous innovations such as a circular landing field (which would facilitate optimum use of landing space despite changes in wind direction, and would make it possible for several planes to land or take off at the same time), runway marker lights, and radio beacons (which would guide a plane to a safe landing through fog), 3 as well as the nation’s first hard-surface runway. (p. 8) After successful decade in operations, the Mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGuardia, decided to establish the New York Municipal Airport in Queens, known today as LaGuardia Airport. The purpose of the New York Municipal Airport was to reduce the travel time between EWR and New York. After...

...Nokia’s New Home in Romania 1 The rapid move in the telecommunications technology world has pushed many of top cellular leaders to examine the ever-increasing challenge of efficiency, effectiveness and the cost conscience choices of product supply and demand. Business managers must consider the best markets for creating new products to meet customer’s needs, while remaining competitive and fostering valued employee and community connections. Nokia, one of the world’s largest cellular providers with an estimated 49,560 permanent employees (as of 4/1/07), national research centers and distribution sites globally; opted to begin yet another production and distribution site in Transylvania, Romania (Corporate Responsibility, 2007). The 88 million dollar investment was set before John Guerry a 36-year old Texan in charge of the plant. His challenge was to select, train and retain adequate employees with a skill based work environment to ensure that a multinational competitor would not impede on the best workers (Ewing, 2009). The reasons why Romanians are motivated to obtain a job at Nokia’s new factory begin with the well regarded technical university where engineering students can begin their career with a globally secure company. A repressive communist dictatorship has left a blaring mark of impoverished conditions for the city of 400,000 people. ...Movie Critic Hum/150 6/6/2016 The film I chose to critique this week is the classic family comedy Home Alone (1990) directed by Chris Columbus. Leading actors in this film is eight year old Kevin McCallister played by Macaulay Culkin, along with Peter McCallister, the father, played by John Heard, Mrs. McCallister played by Catherine O’Hara, Marv, who is the first burglar, played by Daniel Stern, and Harry, the other burglar played by Joe Pesci. Other characters in this film are Buzz the brother, mean Uncle Frank, and creepy old man Marley. The title of the film hints to the audience that someone is home alone, but the viewer does not know what happens in the story until watching the film, which makes it more interesting. This film is about a large family who gets together for a Christmas trip to Paris, but the night before they leave there is a wind storm, which knocks out all of the power, which means their alarm clock does not go off, and they sleep in. This puts them in a mad rush to get to the airport, in turn leaving Kevin behind, and the rest continue on to a fun family adventure. One part of a filmmaker’s goal among others is to create the right mood through a believable mise-en-scene; different settings that took place in Home Alone were McCallister’s home, the airport, inside the airplane, church, a grocery store, the tree house, and Santa exhibit. The two filming locations used in this film were in Chicago, Illinois, and in Paris, France...

...was to provide a fresh new creative area of the city consisting of leisure facilities, housing and offices; becoming one of the largest redevelopment projects in the world. The following text will examine Bristol’s Harbourside transformation and the knock on implications for the local community socially and economically. Bristol's Harbourside area was once the original sight of the Port of Bristol. The Port of Bristol was once the central hub of Bristol’s economy, exporting woollen and additional manufactured goods as well as imports in sugar cane, tobacco, rum and cocoa. During the late 1700’s Bristol’s Port business was affected due to the River Avon’s tidal range of 35 feet. This large tidal range meant that the ships were beached in the mud of the River Avon for hours awaiting for the tide to come back in, in order to unload and load cargo. This had a knock on effect of the Ports business causing many ships to move trade to the Port of Liverpool. In an attempt to overcome the challenge of the second highest tidal range in the world the floating harbour was put forward as a solution. During the next two centuries the harbour flourished as a lively profitable port. (Visit Bristol. 2015) The floating Harbour was constructed to sustain a more or less constant water level along the Bristol Dockland stretch of the River Avon. The floating harbour constructed between 1804 and 1809 assisted Bristol’s cities growth, becoming one of the most significant ports in the world. (Bristol...

...Port Scans and Ping Sweeps Port scans and ping sweeps are just some of the methods used by hackers to break in and attack vulnerable systems on a targeted network. There are various levels of these probes where some are very easy to detect and stop while others can be a little more difficult to find and require special tools and knowledge. The purpose of this report is to help one gain a more clear understanding of what port scans and ping sweeps are, what they do, and whether they are something to worry about or not. Port scans are a simple method used to help discover ports that are available and running on a particular target network. Once a vulnerable port is found, a hacker could then gather information and plan an attack on that service. All you have to do is write a port scan up using a programming language such as Java or Perl, connect it to a series of ports and wait to see what responds and what doesn’t. There are different levels of port scans. Some are very simple and easy to detect and because of that are not used as often as some of the more stealthy versions. In order to detect a stealth port scan, you need special tools such as software or a firewall. One tool made by Solar Designer has developed such a tool called scanlogd which listens in on the networks background for interference of port scans (Lawrence, Teo, 2000). Another common method to negate these scans is to shutdown ports that aren’t in use or necessary. Ping sweeps are another type of network...

Andrea."Global Trade Comes Home: Community Impacts of Goods Movement.," Environmental Health Feb2008, accessed October 5,2014, This article focuse on the airpollution and the impacts on the community residents in Long Beach. It shined light on the idea that the government and society as a whole focuses more on electronics, toys and fancy items versus their health. It is very common for indivdivauls toe aware of the latest gadget that has come out versus the impact pollution and toxicticy will have on the their lives. This in itself speaks volumes on the way we value our health. The article touches bases on the trucks, trains and warhouses near residential areas. Indivudals whom live close to these routes that truck drivers must take in order to get to their appropriate location, are constantly being exposed to vechile emissions that causes serious halth problems. Forty percent of all imports in the Unted States come from the ports in Long beach and Los Angeles. This massive percentage plays a large part in the health threats that residence living near the ports experience. Much less attention has focused on air pollution and other community-level impacts in the United States, as toys, electronics, * food, and other imports travel through ports, then to trucks, trains, warehouses, and stores in a complex system called “goods movement.” Along the route, residents are exposed to diesel exhaust and other vehicle emissions, noise from truck-congested...
