...importantly, college is important to me not only to make myself proud but to be a role model to my children. To show them that despite what obstacles stand in a person’s way, they should never give up. Being a young, single minority mother with two children and only a high school diploma, I was not afforded the opportunities to acquire certain jobs. This made me realized the importance of furthering my education. Many personal experiences have influenced my understanding that without a college education I will not be able to provide financially for my family and to give them the foundation which they need to succeed. Abraham Lincoln quoted that one should, “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” It is often perceived that having children at a young age would halt my opportunities to obtain a college education or opportunities for me to have a productive life, however, that perception was wrong. Like other parents I have been repeating the mantras, “go to school” and “education is the key to success” repeatedly over the years. As a mother, I am aware that my children look up to me as a role model and therefore, I have not settled for my high school diploma and continued my education. As I, continue to work hard and dedicate myself to my education, I have already achieved an Associate Degree in Human Resource Management and currently pursuing my Bachelors...

...planner or calendar to keep deadlines, commitments, assignments will assist me in focusing on the best ways I can succeed in college. Managing time with family, work, and school plays a key role in succeeding. Although it is one of the key roles to my success, I also feel like this will be one of my biggest obstacles as well. As a single mother or 3 children, working a fulltime job and managing my home I have high stress levels with trying to make ends meet and maintaining everything on my own. After working a full day at work and dealing with stressors there I have to come home to children that demand all of my attention its difficult to even imagine having to study and do homework on top of everything else. But in order to obtain my degree I realize that I have to be committed to school and to myself to make time and put forth the extra effort. I realize that I have made a personal decision to go back to school and get the degree I have always wanted and its up to me and only my to make it happen. Some people think they are too smart or so intelligent that they don’t need to take personal responsibility to succeed and that their degree is just going to get handed to them with out any efforts because that is what has always been the case for them, but I know I need to make changes and stick to them to get what I want. I also know you can really only get out of something what you put into it. In conclusion, I am taking control of my life, I...

...(MBA) degree started out as a requirement to be successful in my field of study. It quickly evolved into a desire to achieve a personal goal. Whereas in undergraduate school, the emphasis was on completing a MBA or sitting for the CPA exam. As an Accounting major, there did not appear to be too many options after graduation. As I was preparing for graduation, my brother was admonishing me to continue to Graduate School. At the time I viewed him as a father figure to me. Ordinarily, I listened to everything he had advised me to do. Unfortunately, this time I did not. I was not focus on continuing my education and had no desire at that time to pursue a secondary degree. My thought process quickly changed as I entered the workforce. Goals do not need to be assigned, as people also set goals on their own. Self-set goals, however, are often influence by others, for example, when goals are conjointly set (e.g. in participative decision-making and employee involvement; Wilpert, 1994), or when goals are adopted from highly respected models (e.g. adopting standards for self-reward; Mischel & Liebert, 1966). Cantor & Fleeson (1994) point out that social context cues, such as normative expectations of the social community, also influence goal selection. I am a very determined and goal-oriented individual. Like most people, I have written and re-written my five and 10 year-plan time and time again. I have been discouraged in my lifetime as many others. Situations and obstacles have...

My motivation comes from various people including my mother, myself, and my family. Since day one, my mother has encouraged me to be the best person I can be. She has challenged and guided me to overcome every obstacle placed in my way. I am also a self-motivator. I am always trying to improve rather it’s with my GPA or something as simple as eating more vegetables. Sometimes your greatest motivator is yourself. My family is also a great motivator. ...In my opinion an education is absolutely necessary in order to have a successful career. The first thing that strikes me about education is knowledge gain. Education gives us the knowledge of the world around us. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on everything in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. Some say, education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world while knowledge is something very different. They are partly right. But the conversion of information to knowledge is possible because of education. Education makes us capable of interpreting rightly the things perceived. There is no ending to the possibilities and success that a person can have in their life and career. Education is important to me because it cultivates me into mature individual, who are capable of planning for the future and making the right decision. My future is a place where I have to spend the rest of my life. I have many experiences to look forward to and enjoy, and I'll also have different times when things aren't so good. My intelligence, responsibility, and positive attitude makes me an exceptional student. I take full advantages of any opportunity that comes my way. I aspire to have a great future. In addition i also enjoy meeting new people and learning new religions, beliefs, and other cultures. I think a good student is one who can weave...

...This paper will reflect the controversy of the Welfare Reform Act, its role in public policy, and does it cause recipients of its use to develop a dependency and does government play a part in not producing productive workers in society. The controversy of Welfare is not one that government has found to be an ethical issue. Democrats see its needs for American families in need and Republicans see it as a state of dependency brought on by the Democrats. Welfare is not only a federal issue but rather a federal and state issue collectively. Although its funding comes from federal government, it’s allocated to states where welfare is implemented. America’s welfare system for cash assistance has been the support system for mothers and children for decades. Welfare has become a dependency for families who have lost their jobs, are disabled, or cannot get employment due to America’s poor economic system. It has become a “shrunken piece of America’s social safety net” (Goldstein, 2010). Being dependent on welfare is not healthy. Welfare is a dependency because families are provided financial stability for a limited amount of time; families get comfortable getting assistance and not working, and families have no other source of help without welfare. The numbers of families getting welfare checks have increased in the past five years. The numbers have increased to 185,000 between the start of America’s recession in the year 2007 and the spring of 2011 (Goldstein...

...the structural force in society. There is a need to make a distinction, between women and men concerning their perceptions and roles within the workforce in today’s society. The distinction between sex and gender is that sex relates to the biological difference whereas gender relates to the socially unequal division into femininity and masculinity. Theorists have stressed the importance of social rather than the biological determinants of a wide range of behaviors between men and women and created an oppositional stance that attempted to tie women to subordinate positions on account of their biology. This has created an immense contribution to feminist thinking and has placed a powerful argument in the field of sociology. Although women’s gains in education may have been central to narrowing the gender gap in income historically, gender differences in fields of study continue to disadvantage women (Bobbitt-Zeher, 2007). Gender and Employment Before World War II, women did not have a major role in the workplace. Some argue that women in pre-industrial societies had a considerable influence in the household, which in those times were not separate from the various productive activities. This changed after the Industrial Revolution, as many men moved away from home to mechanized factories, lessening the involvement of women in the economic process. Women soon became more associated with domestic values and responsibilities, which feminists argue has tied them to inequality, past...

...Domains of Human Development Zikria S. Mohammed Oakton Community College Development is a critical part of our life. Many of us grow but do not develop. Definition of development sates that it is a pattern of change that begins at conception and continues throughout the lifespan. Development as a whole is divided into four ages. First age: childhood and adolescence, second stage: prime adulthood age 20-59, third stage: 60-79 years old age, fourth stage: 80 years and older (Santrock, 2013). All of the four periods of development are connected to each other. Development is life-long process and it does not end at early adulthood; rather continues throughout one’s life. Development is multidimensional. Regardless of what ones age might be their body, mind, emotions and relationships are changing and affecting each other (Santrock, 2013). Development is multidirectional and throughout life some dimensions or components of a dimension expand while others shrink in response. For instance, when the language of English is acquired in early development, the capacity for acquiring second and a third language decreases later in development (Santrock, 2013). Development is plastic and changes occur throughout our life. As individuals we possess more capacity to change when we are young as opposed to when we are old (Santrock, 2013). Development is contextual and all of the development occurs in a context or setting. This includes families, school, peer groups, churches, cities, neighborhoods...

...must read issue. I gave a lot of thought to my good looks and thought I certainly can incorporate this in my paper. Then I looked into the mirror and asked myself, who are you, really and the answer came back to me. I am someone that wears many different hats. Some are quite perplexed but most are just that of the average guy, Average, that’s one word I never use in describing myself, for I always think of me as very extraordinary. So I decided to share with the world who I really am. It is amazing that when asked, “who am I” the first thing that comes to mind is “what am I”. So often we define ourselves by the “what’s” (job title, social status, degrees and accolades, etc.) rather than the “who’s” (believer in Jesus Christ, loving mother, dedicated to meeting the needs of friends and love ones). When beginning this assinment the major things that came to mind were the what’s rather than who and what are my worldviews? For me it took a lot of thought and examination to really determine “Who Am I”. This paper will demonstrate who I am from creation, early childhood, teen years, early adulthood, until present and what is the purpose of my life. There are many circumstances surrounding the real JoAnn Burchett-Stewart. I am grateful that God made me a loving, caring, generous, person. I try to treat people the way that I want to be treated. The worldview that I feel is mostly incorporated in my life is...

DeBell stated that the absence of a father in a child’s home, the most consequential trend of our time, leads to social disaster(Pg. 427). Goldenberg (2008), states that a dysfunctional family, by definition, has failed to fulfill its purpose of nurturing the growth of its members. Single-parent families are more common in today’s society and are...

...Sexism is at fault for why women do not get hired into managerial positions. “Women endeavoring to succeed in a masculine work role such as upper management, currently face obstacles based on their perceived gender role” (Nadler & Stockdale 283). Management is typically seen as masculine so the stereotypes taught when young do not allow for a women to fill a “mans” role. Those already in top management, mostly men, do not bring in women because of sexism. “Among women who work in faculty and salaried or professional positions, the invisible barriers to advancement rooted in sexism are known as the ‘glass ceiling’” (Allen 55). Scholars created a work for the sexism preventing career advancement for women. The statistics also support the notion of the glass ceiling. The percentage of faculty positions held by women is notably lower than the percentage of women earning degrees each year (Toutkoushian 686). Women are not getting the proper representation in management positions. This has gotten better over the years. “Overall, gains for women in the senior ranks of college and university administration have been substantial; in the aggregate across types of postsecondary institutions, women account for 45% of all senior administrators. This percentage represents considerable growth over the two decades between 1986, when they were only 10% of...

...Behavior in Correlation with a Lack of Paternal Authority: A Single Case Study Rebecca M Bauman 2015 MAR LIB-495-GS001 Abstract Paternal authority, according to the existing literature, is of upmost importance to the healthy psychosexual development of a child. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image. The woman uses transference in her intimate relationships as a desperate attempt to gain control of her life. Further research and use of psychometric...

...The Vajra Guru Mantra is the mantra associated with Guru Rinpoche also known as Padmasambhava. This is a draft translation of a treasure text which explains the Vajra Guru Mantra. It was originally concealed during the time of Padmasambhava in Tibet and later rediscovered by Karma Lingpa (14th century) who brought it forth from its place of concealment and copied it down on reams of gold. It is simply known as "The Syllable by Syllable Commentary Explaining the Benefits and Advantages of the Vajra Guru Mantra." It begins with an invocation and then goes into a dialog between Yeshe Tsogyal, the spiritual consort of Padmasambhava. and Padmasambhava himself. And so, Yeshe Tsogyal begins: I the woman Yeshe Tsogyal, having offered to you the inner and outer mandala on a vast scale, have the following request. O great teacher, Pema Jungne, you have been extremely kind to us, the Tibetan people, leaving for us a legacy that will benefit us now and in future lives. Your kindness is so great that we have never experienced anything like this before, nor will we ever experience the like in the future. In particular, you have given me the quintessential teachings for my practice, so that now, even though I am a humble person, I have no doubt that I will attain enlightenment. In the future, sentient beings will have very short attention spans and a great many things will clutter and occupy their minds. Their characters will be rough and difficult to tame. ...The Social Science Mixed Racial and Cultural Groups in the United States ENG COMP II/ABE1314D Dr. Nicole Martinez and Mrs. Karissa Sullivan May 6, 2013 Mixed Racial and Cultural Groups of the United States is a huge topic being discussed recently because mixed racial relationships are increasing daily all around the world, but especially with-in the United States. There are many individuals who elaborate on whether or not each group expects to be treated as a separate entity, or be considered just Americans without the hyphen. Is the United States better off by classifying individuals by their ethnic background? What do we actually gain by these separate entities? Why is the government so concerned on everyone’s ethnic background? These are just a few of many questions that are being discussed and I will answer based on facts. While mixed racial and cultural groups continue to rise in the United States, it seems that the vast majority continues to pursue their separate ethnicity with-in the United States, but when approached abroad with-in another country, they seem to consider themselves as Americans vice African-American, Mexican American, Asian American, etc. (Perez and Hirshmann, “The Changing Racial and Ethnic Composition of the United States). Many Americans have multiple identities that reflect complex ancestral origins, tribal and communal associations, and varied ideological outlooks on race and culture. In general, people do not change their ethnicities...
