...sustainable despite the Great Depression. After the stock market crash of 1929. Nonetheless, farmers during this time period struggled hard to survive due to falling prices, the need for more production in order to pay for rent and to pay off debt acquired over time, and widespread drought. The first picture in my collage is of a young male splitting wood in preparation of winter, most likely for firewood in order to keep warm. His clothes look a little worn and dirty from working, as a pile of already split wood can be seen behind him. He looks to be around the preteen or teen age, so this conveys that although his family may own the farm, their children would likely be needed to help with various tasks around the farm....

The Dirty Thirties: The Great Depression In Canada

...Topic: The Dirty Thirties The Great Depression in Canada took place during the 1930s, and was time of great economic crisis. Since the Great Depression was such a difficult time to live in, it is important to understand the underlying background causes that allowed for this to happen, as well as the economic cycle. Additionally, it is helpful to know the social & economic conditions during the Depression, and how people “escaped” the bad experiences. It all started on Black Tuesday, or Tuesday October 29, 1929, when the stock market crashed. Towards the end of the 1920s, many companies were producing more goods than they could sell. When the stock market crashed, demand was greatly decreased as now one wanted to buy things that they didn’t necessarily need, causing these companies to close. Secondly, many people, companies, and banks were buying stocks, machinery, and other items on credit, so when the stock market crashed, many people could not pay back their debts. Banks and companies closed, and people were evicted from their homes. Thirdly, Canada was too dependent on selling primary products and the US economy. When the US entered the Depression, Canada lost a major market, and soon followed as well....

Wall Street Crash

...THE GREAT DEPRESSION The economic boom of the 1920’s came to a sudden end in October 29, 1929. In June 1929 prices of stocks and shares had reached new highs. The Stock Market seemed to be a quick and easy way to get rich. The Stock Market is the place where stocks are traded. More and more people wanted to ‘play the market’ (Buy and sell stocks). [pic] The Wall Street stock market (located in New York City) was not regulated .Anybody could buy shares and they could be bought ‘on the margin’-This is when the stock broker and the stock holder merge their money to buy stocks, for example, people could buy $1000 worth of stocks for only $100 and borrowed the rest from stockbroker. Buying on the margin became a common practice. People waited for the share prices to go up again and then resold their shares for a profit. It was usually easy to pay back the loan and still make money. The day of the crash: By the summer of 1929 there were 20 million shareholders in America and prices continued to rise. But in October 1929, things began to change. Some people realized that share prices had risen too high and wanted to sell before they fell. THE CAUSES OF THE WALL STREET CRASH 1. Dust Bowl

...concurrence with the Great American Depression. States affected by the weather adversities included the Canadian South, South Eastern region of Montana, South Western parts of North Dakota, and Texas, North Eastern regions of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, and major regions of South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The causative factors for the development of the Dust Bowl were attributed to two main factors; drought and famine condition in existing in Central America and poor farming methods on the vast dry lands from the Canadian prairies in the South to the US, acreage of over 400,000 km2 (Langston-George, 2015). Based on Dust Bowl’s historical naure, it is imperative to understand the causes, characteristics, impact and draw future lessons to mitigate such occurrences in the human and physical environment. Characteristics of the Dust Bowl The Dust bowl region lies on the west side of the 100th meridian. The elevation of the plains was estimated to be 760m on the east side and 1800m to the west. The erosion and drought affected a geographical coverage of about 100,000,000acres. The climatic condition of the area is hot and dry as it receives approximately 510mm of rainfall in an annual span. These make it vulnerable to extensive drought periods that alternate with an equivalent length of unusual wetness. In this case, the region is prone to survivor drought and floods. The wet seasons are good for agriculture but crops tend to fail in the dry seasons. The region...

Schizophrenia

...Schizophrenia During the early twentieth century schizophrenia was described as a breakdown of integration among emotion, thought, and action. Schizophrenia only attacks one percent of individuals, and your race, culture, ethnicity, or background has no effect on whether you will develop this disease. Schizophrenia usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood, there are rare cases that it starts after this point. “The symptoms and treatment for schizophrenia are difficult to define.” (Heinrichs,2005; Krueger and Markon, 2006) Some of the following are common symptoms, not all of them appear in each person who is diagnosed. The symptoms are so random and rare that if a symptom appears more than once in a month, then you have grounds to determine that the subject has schizophrenia. (Tamminga and Holcomb, 2005; Walker et al, 2004): Delusions- Feeling as if there is someone or some other force controlling you, you feel as if someone is trying to persecute you, and a positive of the delusional group is feeling grandeaur. The Great Depresion

...How did the Great Depression occur? A Review of the Literature Khair Chibly New Jersey City University This paper was prepared for ESL English Composition 2, taught by Professor Monroe. How did the Great Depression occur? A Review of the Literature The Great Depression The Great Depression was a downfall of the U.S. economy which had gone into a terrible period six months earlier and has been said to have started with a shattering collapse of the stock market prices on the New York Stock Exchange in October 1929. Furthermore, throughout the next three years stock prices in the United States continued to fall, until in late 1932 they had decreased to about 20 percent of their worth in 1929. Ruining many thousands of investors, this swift decline in the price of the assets worried banks and other financial institutions, mainly those who hold stocks in their portfolios. In addition, many banks were forced to be ruin and by 1933, 11,000 of the United States' 25,000 banks had fallen. The failure of so many banks, combined with a general and nationwide loss of confidence in the economy, led to bring down the levels of spending, demand and later of production. The result was enormously falling production and rising unemployment and by 1932, U.S. manufacturing output had fallen to 54 percent of its 1929 level, and unemployment had risen to between 12 and 15 million workers. Cochran (1968) reported that “By this time it was clear that the decline in the economy was accentuated...

Comparing Oregon to Michigan

... Oregon tends to have only two seasons. They are summer and winter, or as the locals say wet and dry. In the summer time it gets into the 90’s, yet at night it gets down into the 50’s, which makes for some nice sleeping weather. The summers are a very dry time of year in Oregon. There are no big thunderstorms, no lightening, and very little, if no rain at all. This type of climate makes it hard to grow certain types of crops. Do to the lack of rain and the cool temperatures at night. The one crop that grows best is grass. The Willamette Valley, namely Linn and Benton counties, is the world’s largest producers of cool- weather grasses. Now we come to the winter season. Ah yes, better known as the rainy season, during which it rains for eight months. Because of the amount of rain that falls, grass and fescue, grows very well in this region. The only problem with winter, other than the rain, is that the sun does not come out very often. With the lack of sun shine and over cast skies comes a feeling of depression. Oregon has one of the highest suicide rates in the winter as compared to other states. It is a very depressing time of year. Michigan has four seasons. They are winter; spring, summer, and fall. In the summer the days seem to be longer. The summers in Michigan are very hot and humid, both during the day and the night. This type of climate makes for a good growing season, especially for plants...
