I will discuss when and how colorism started, and how it affects the way you feel about yourself and the way you live your life. “If you’re black, stay back; if you’re brown, stick around; if you’re yellow, you’re mellow; if you’re white, you’re all right.” This is an old nursery rhyme sung by kids. These days you would probably see the same idea being expressed by African Americans themselves. There is only one ethnic group that acts as if light and dark skinned are two different nationalities. Which ethnic group, you ask. African-Americans. Colorism refers to discrimination based on skin color. Colorism disadvantages dark-skinned people, while privileging those with lighter skin. I have also experienced colorism. People of my own race, especially the men will treat you differently just based on the color of your skin, and I also used to wish I was lighter. This topic may relate to you because colorism may exist in other cultures too, like Vietnam and India. ...Immediacy Whenever it is time to prepare for a speech in class the first thing I think about is how I can connect with the audience. I do this first because I feel that any audience member should feel a connection between them and the speaker whether or not they agree or disagree with the speaker. And the way I display this connection with the audience is through the types of immediacy such as verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, technological influences on immediacy, and cultural influences on immediacy. In my first speech of the class, Any Old Bag Speech, I focused on getting the audience to me and like me for who I am. When I watched the speech on acclaim I realized that I used a form of verbal immediacy. Verbal immediacy directly relates to judgments of a speaker’s competence and character and includes the use of personal examples, humor, addressing others by first name and asking questions that solicit viewpoints or opinions. Using humor and personal examples in the speech certainly helped me relax because I could tell the audience was enjoying my speech instead of nodding off due to boredom. It also gave me confidence in my ability to speak in front of people, which is one of the main purposes of this course. The Speech Accent Archive website is established to uniformly exhibit a large set of speech accents from a variety of language backgrounds. At this website, native and non-native speakers of English all read the same English paragraph and are carefully recorded. I chose to listen to Turkish, Japanese and Arabic and compare the accents of the different English speakers. Throughout the paper I will discuss the different speaker’s pronunciation of vowels, consonants, and phrasing intonations. The first speaker I listened to was a 27 year old lady who was from Bingol, Turkey. She began to learn English at the age of 26 and has been living in the United States for almost a year. The first thing I noticed after listening to her Turkish accent was that she did a lot of devoicing. Devoicing involves turning consonants that are supposed to be voiced into either a voiceless or its voiceless counterpart. A good example of this is when she said the word “Bob.” When the final consonant in Bob was devoiced, it sounded like she said the word "Bop." I also noticed that she did a lot of consonant voicing by changing the s to a z. So for example all the words in the paragraph that ended in an s (things, spoons, peas, cheese, plastics, kids, and bags) she pronounced the ending sound with a z.
