...INTRODUCTION Order fulfillment and delivery of products to customers are tricky parts of supply chain management. Earlier in 1990s, there was pull system in use and later it changed to push- pull system in order fulfilment. This change in system of order fulfillment was to increase margins, service and also to cope with the increase in volume of the orders. Order fulfillment does not confine to just delivering the ordered goods to the customers, but also provide all related customer services. In simple terms, along with the product, product information and usage information should be provided with the product. In addition to this, to maintain customer retention and satisfaction, there should be a system of exchange or return if desired by the customer. Order fulfillment includes several operations such as inventory management, packing, shipping, delivering and accounting. Hence, most of the operations involved are dealt without having to face the customers. TYPES OF ORDER FULFILLMENT Order fulfillment is of two types based on the usage of the process at a particular period of time. There is a conventional or traditional order fulfillment and E-commerce order fulfillment process. Traditional retailing of supply chain was used at the time of 1990s. In traditional retailing, inventory production is initiated at first and later is followed by pushing the product to customers. So, it begins with pulling and ends with pushing the product to customers. e- Commerce retailing deals...

However this would be costly and one may be over capacity while the online sector was growing Outsourced fulfilment – another firm will perform the fulfilment Will this work for Chips Supreme? They have existing distribution centre There network is currently successful, less need to outsource They’re currently well set up for integrated distribution Store fulfilment - order online and pickup in store, is picked in store Short order time Close to customer Available in customer units Can cause unexpected out of stock However, Store error is a concern • Chips supreme – customers can customise in store Flow-through fulfilment – order online and pickup in store, is picked in the...

...Improving Order-taking and Fulfillment for the Broadway Café The existing order-taking and fulfillment process at Broadway Café is based on too many process steps which can inherently be slow, confusing and inconvenient. For instance, having 2 sequential ordering stations A & B where the same customer has to first order his food at Station A, then move on to station B to add beverages and pay for his order is inefficient and can break the ordering process continuity. Based on the principles of business process reengineering, the recommendations that I would give to improve the order-taking and fulfillment for the Broadway Café would be: First, rearrange the environment area. For example, instead of picking up the order right next to the bathroom area, I would relocate where the food is ordered and picked to route that traffic away from the toilets and their potential odors. This reengineering process would be esthetically and hygienically beneficial towards a better dining environment. Second, link parallel activities together, such as, ordering and paying for food and drinks in the same counters (A), then picking up food and drinks in the following counters (B). Counter (C) would be for cream, sugar and lids. This would simplify the ordering process and enhance the efficiency of the employees manning these stations by reducing their total interactions with each customer. Third, locate the ordering counters (A) next to the Café main entrance. This again adds efficiency...

...Order processing Order processing is a key element of Order fulfillment. Order processing operations or facilities are commonly called "distribution centers". "Order processing" is the term generally used to describe the process or the work flow associated with the picking, packing and delivery of the packed item(s) to a shipping carrier. The specific "order fulfillment process" or the operational procedures of distribution centers are determined by many factors. Each distribution center has its own unique requirements or priorities. There is no "one size fits all" process that universally provides the most efficient operation. Some of the factors that determine the specific process flow of a distribution center are: * The nature of the shipped product - shipping eggs and shipping shirts can require differing fulfillment processes * The nature of the orders - the number of differing items and quantities of each item in orders * The nature of the shipping packaging - cases, totes, envelopes, pallets can create process variations * Shipping costs - consolidation of orders, shipping pre-sort can change processing operations * Availability and cost and productivity of workforce - can create trade-off decisions in automation and manual processing operations * Timeliness of shipment windows - when shipments need to be completed based on carriers can create processing variations * Availability of capital expenditure dollars - influence on manual verses automated...

...integrated with other applications in order to maintain the inventory level. 2. Overview of IMS: Global Inventory Management System is otherwise called as IMS. IMS is a single resource/entity where the inventory for all kinds of items is maintained/monitored. The different kinds of items available in the eCommerce shopping site are Online, Club and Auctions. The three important terms used in IMS are SUPPLY, DEMAND and AVAILABLE. These are the fields with which the inventory is monitored in IMS applications. SUPPLY – Overall Item Inventory available for purchase DEMAND – Ordered quantity by the customer for an item AVAILABLE – Item inventory available for purchase after the demand Let’s discuss more about these fields and the inventory updates in the following sections 3. Order Creation and Inventory Validation in IMS When an order is placed for an item from eCommerce application, immediately the inventory update happens in both Demand and Available fields in IMS application. When an item is added to shopping cart and on navigating to Shipping page, the item inventory is reserved for the ordered quantity in IMS. For example, let’s consider the item inventory as below before order creation. Supply – 10; Demand – 0; Available – 10 Customer places an order for 5 quantities. Once the order is created immediately the inventory in IMS gets updated as below. Supply – 10; Demand – 5; Available – 5 Next if someone tries to place an order for the same item with more than...

...basis. They operate five (5) upscale retail stores in the New England market that offer a high level of customer attention, with a headquarters (HQ) is in Burlington, Massachusetts, and a single warehouse, distribution, and eCommerce fulfillment center in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Most of their products are purchased from two suppliers, Winter Gear Distributers outside of Providence, Rhode Island, and Boston Fitness Supplies in Marlboro, Massachusetts. FastFit has expanded successfully in the New England area over the past five years. However to expand nationally as a major retailer, they need to improve the scalability of their operations (stores and warehouses). A key part of their strategy is to leverage information systems to automate and improve operations, to strengthen management controls, and to enable significant growth while maintaining the “high touch” customer experience. A diagram of their complete non-Web based operations follows. See figure 1. NB: The following questions are due later in the semester Web/E-Commerce Questions (assume customers order on the Web) 1. a) Assuming that Fastfit goes ahead with its plans to have an e-commerce site, identify two physical locations, from where customers can enter their orders to the ecommerce site b) For each of the locations that you mentioned, identify the technologies (cover the areas of software, hardware and networks) that a customer would need (at the location) to softaccomplish this activity...

...In the environment that we live in today, we have transitioned to instant gratification consumers. Long gone are the days where you had to get in the car to shop in store; most people do it from the comfort of their couch. With the increased shopping presence, retailers are under extreme pressure to deliver to the demands of their customers. Zara, an international apparel retailer, based out of Spain, has figured out a way to give their customers the ultimate advantage over competitors by a process called Rapid-Fire Fulfillment. Implementing this process has not only reduced their design to sales cycle in weeks compared to months from their competitors, but “Zara’s sales and net income have continued to grow at an annual rate of over 20%” (Ferdows, Lewis & Machuca, 2004). Why is Rapid-Fire Fulfillment Successful for Zara? Zara has a rather untraditional way of processing their products. In Rapid-Fire Fulfillment, Zara can have strict controls over who handles their Supply Chain needs. Zara is one of the few retailers who are in charge of designing, manufacturing, and distributing their products. With this control, they are able to set a quick pace for the duration of the supply chain process. “At Zara, rapid timing and synchronicity are paramount” (Ferdows, Lewis & Machuca, 2004). Zara’s factories use advanced just-in-time systems that all them to customize their in-house processes and take advantage of innovations quickly. One processed used called postponement,...

With 750 competitors in the US alone, and a market that is volatile, Donner’s ability to anticipate and resolve design problems and prototype techniques enabled it to maintain its competitive edge.
