...In this report, we discuss the following sentiment: > Privacy in a world of online social networks is an old-fashioned concept and young people feel less need to protect their privacy. This statement implies that young people do not care about their privacy, and do not act to protect their privacy, at least not as much as their elders. # Privacy Paradox The discussed sentiment is known as the privacy paradox. The study that coined this term makes the claim that "Adults are concerned about invasion of privacy, while teens freely give up personal information." The study claims that young people post too much of their private information in public spaces like Facebook and MySpace. This sentiment was not exclusive to adults either. According...

...The Shale Gas Revolution in the U.S. - Aspect of Domestic Market - Prepared for Microeconomics May 6, 2014 "The all-of-the-above energy strategy I announced a few years ago is working, and today, America is closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades," Obama said during his fifth State of the Union speech on January 2014. In a fact sheet accompanying the speech, the White House called on Congress to establish "sustainable shale gas growth zones." As mentioned by the U.S. president Obama, “The Shale Gas Revolution” is hot topic in the energy industry recently. Previously, the U.S. has imported large amounts of natural gas from other countries, but now it is expected to be an exporter of natural gas because of shale gas production. (Reference: Annual Energy Outlook 2011, May, 2011) Exporting shale gas would bring economic benefits. Gross Domestic Product can be increased, employment on LNG supply chain would be increased, and there will be no import of LNG anymore. Nevertheless, there is some limitation which will not favor to domestic LNG market. For exporting the shale gas, there are many researches to determine the associated costs. The price U.S. LNG exporters can afford to charge can be separated into the following components. Price = Wellhead price + Pipeline + Liquefaction + Shipping + Regasification Based on the above formula, experts’ estimate that the minimum price the U.S. and afford to export LNG to Asia, mainly Japan and Korea...

...A Pew Research Center study has shown that many first generations who assimilate the American culture are more influenced by those around them, consequently, there is an inclination towards crime (Morin, 2013). On the other hand, first generation college students are head-to-head against other students whose family have attended college; first generations are in debt, in addition to coming from a low-income family. Moreover, first generations should not be entitled to little-to-none advantages due to their background but should be evaluated on their work ethics. The government, authority, and society must focus on these issues of racial discrimination, injustice, and prejudice, especially during this period of time. In 2016, immigrants and their American-born children made up 27% of the U.S. population (Zong & Batalova, 2017). The government and those with authority must amend these issue by taking action abroad and regulating areas where potential dangers are high alert, in order to prevent any harm in the community. Conditionally...

...#what is social networking? Social Networking - perhaps you've heard of it before, but are not quite sure what it means. Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighbourhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to gather and share first-hand informationand experiences about any number of topics . . . from golfing, gardening, developing friendships andprofessional alliances. A broad class of web sites and services that allow you to connect with friends, family, and colleague's online, as well as meet people with similar interests or hobbies. When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them. The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking...

...College men’s alcohol use is related to both power and powerlessness. Many men choose to drink in order to be sociable and fit into a place of perceived social power within their friend groups (p. 307). Based on Capraro’s research, college men’s alcohol use is also influenced by the fact that heavy drinking can make them feel more strong and assertive (p. 310). This once again shows their motives to conform to traditional masculinity and achieve the social power within the ranks of college groups (p. 310). Yet at the same time, many men drink as a form of “escapism or to get drunk,” showing their desire to become powerless through alcohol use (p. 308). Even if a man is drinking to appear masculine and become socially empowered in the eyes of other people, they individually feel powerless and numb the stress of conforming to college masculine culture (p. 310). Thus, we have the paradox of power and powerlessness....

...We have a society that is based almost entirely in the future, always in preparation for the next step. High school to college, college to life, and life to retirement. Seldom do we as individuals think about the present, or "stop to smell the roses," as the old idiom puts it. We are already forced to live so far in the future, and now the idea is proposed to increase how far away we live. The anxieties and hesitance that come with college preparations made in high school may be spread to middle and elementary school students. High school students are barely capable of such a choice, and making them choose as children can only increase burnout and fear later. While the effort to better prepare students for their future is noble, applying the pressure to actual children would likely have a deleterious effect....

...Myron Medcalf’s article College Hoops’ Black Coaching issue examines why and how the 2011-12 college basketball season had the lowest allocation of African-American head coaches since the 1995-96 season. During the 2011-12 college basketball season, African-Americans held only 18.6% of the Division-1 head coaching positions. During this same period 57.2% of all Division 1 men’s basketball players were African-American. Given that a clear majority of Division 1 basketball players are African-American, it would be hard to debate that African-Americans aren’t severely underrepresented in head coaching positions. African-Americans have had an even more difficult time securing administrative positions in intercollegiate athletics, as only 11% of athletic directors are non-Caucasian. Labels and the homologous production theory are among the key reasons why African-Americans have had such a difficult time securing higher-level administrative and coaching positions in intercollegiate athletics. While many assistant coaching positions in college basketball are held by African-Americans, many of these coaches have a difficult time advancing any further due to labels and stereotypes associated with African-American coaches. One label that has long-been synonymous with...

...The Physics of a Bow and Arrow A bow and arrow operates on certain principle of physics. I will be investigating what factors affect the accuracy of a bow and arrow. Figure 1 - The change in the shape of the bow as the archer draws it. Figure 1 - The change in the shape of the bow as the archer draws it. A bow is a basic machine called a “two-arm spring”. Energy is stored when the archer bends the bow. It may look like the string is being stretched, however, it is not stretched but the shape of the bow is changed. The stored energy is then transferred to the arrow in the form of kinetic energy. The greater the draw length, the greater the momentum and energy that the arrow gains. A longer draw length will influence your accuracy. You, as an individual, need to find the draw length that you are most comfortable with. With your own unique draw length you need to have an anchor point. This point is the place where your hand will be every time you shoot an arrow. This will greatly improve the accuracy of the shot. Figure 2 - Correct form to shoot an arrow Figure 2 - Correct form to shoot an arrow In archery your form is very important. If you do not have the correct form then you will not be able to shoot properly and you might hurt yourself. In Figure 2 (left) we can see the correct form when shooting an arrow. ...Consequently, because legacies and athletes take up about 23% of admitted students at Dartmouth, about 500 possibly more qualified students, who do not have any special recruitment tages, are being denied or waitlisted. In a school like Dartmouth or Stanford, where 5% of 42,000 applicants are accepted and 74% of applicants have above a 30 on the ACT, colleges should not be lowering their standards to include students with lower grades lower than the majority of applicants simply because they have a “recruiting tag.” (CITE). Ultimately, because colleges are admitting less qualified students who are meant to increase diversity, athletic success, or the alumi system, possibly exceptional students are being denied, demonstrating one major flaw within the admissions...
