Introduction

Within this Professional Devolvement Plan (PDP) I will be discussing my strengths, weaknesses, concerns and expectations prior to me going on placement as a student nurse. The use of the SWEC model will enable me to identify what skills or concerns I can improve or build on before I start on my first placement. I will be picking 3 specific areas out of my SWEC table to focus on in this PDP. It is an important skill to be able to identify my strengths and weakness as a student nurse so that I can improve my own skills to give the best patient centred care possible. Cowen (2010) states that the disability legislation requires employers to not discriminate on the basis of a disability, but this does not recognise the fact that certain professions must maintain a high standard of work or competence. Following this, if a student nurse choses to disclose their ability must be able to demonstrate they are fit for practice. This means they have to also meet the same learning outcomes as other pre-registration nurses but the fundamental difference is that support structures are in place for nurses with a disability, before competence is assessed (Cowen, …show more content…
This then allows them to support me with my dyslexia, as sometimes it can be portrayed as being slow and lazy (Child and Langford, 2011). Also a study carried out by Morris and Turnbull (2006) showed that students did not want to disclose their dyslexia due to them feeling singled out. If I did not disclose this then I believe it would negatively impact me in practice. Disclosure will play a big part in me overcoming these concerns of mine, as me and my mentor can set up strategies personalised to me to help with my dyslexia.
From previous experience in working in an acute environment, I have some strategies I believe that will help with my documentation in practice. One of these is to remove myself from any interruptions. This technique was mentioned in the “Dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia: a toolkit for nursing staff” in the RCN handbook authored by (Cowen, 2010). With many other strategies that may be able to help with my documentation, I feel like this tool kit will be a great basis for me to find my own personalised strategies to overcome my concern.
