The four categories of leadership are outlined to express the characteristics of leadership and leaders. My leadership style is outlined, and the leadership techniques I believe are important are expressed. Included in this paper is my personal mission statement. My personal mission statement gives me guidelines in which to lead my life both at work and at home. My methods of leadership and employee training, for my Subway franchise, are used to express my techniques in leadership. Employee motivation, empowerment, and communication are discussed because I believe these are important aspects to being a good leader. Personal Mission in Leadership Leadership is one’s ability to influence others. “Leadership is the use of noncoercive influence to direct and coordinate the activities of a group toward accomplishing a goal” (Riley, 1994). Leadership is used both in the workplace and in everyday life. The power of leadership can be formal or informal. Leadership can be a formal position that gives one the power to make leadership decisions. The power of leadership also can arise from trust and a relationship built between two people. Power that comes from a relationship...

...Leadership is difficult to define and means many different things to different people. I believe Deepak Chopra said it best, “Enlightened leadership is spiritual if we understand spirituality not as some kind of religious dogma or ideology but as the domain of awareness where we experience values like truth, goodness, beauty, love and compassion, and also intuition, creativity, insight and focused attention.” Throughout the semester my definition of leadership has changed drastically. I know that listening to others viewpoint and having to reflect on my own beliefs has brought me to a new outlook on leadership. I understand and see leadership through a different lens now. Although leadership is a topic with many definitions, it remains a universal term that undergoes many changes due to its constantly evolving nature. Leadership is not just for CEO’s but is shown in how one parents a child or how a teacher leads a classroom or how a pastor preaches. Leadership is a universal term that now means that everything I do, I have the choice of being a leader at some level. Throughout this semester the assignments have been enlightening and continues to bring a deeper understanding about leadership. I see movies differently and read books with a changed perspective since taking Leadership classes. This semester the three assignments that were the most influential include the “time track assignment,” “vision paper,” and “ethical orientation quiz” assignments. The “time track” assignment...

...PERSONAL LEADERSHIP STYLE 2 Who am I now as a leader? The conclusion that I have come to is that I have many leadership styles. I love this quote, “The best leaders are clear. They continually light the way, and in the process, let each person know that what they do makes a difference.” (Source Unknown, www.quotelady.com/subjects/leadership.html). I have embraced this quote as the way I would like others to view me as a leader. One of the strongest points I have is my heart for serving others. Robert Greenleaf, in his essay, The Servant Leader (1970), says, "It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant--first to make sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served." Servant leadership means sincerely caring about the welfare and development of the people that follow them. I would not be in the Human Service profession if I was not a Servant Leader. This is one of God’s gifts that He has bestowed upon me. I try to make it always about the other person and try to help them reach their goals and be successful. People who are successful as leaders know where they are going and they have a clearly defined objective that they have a passion to achieve. I feel that God has given me the objective and I will and am doing everything in my power to achieve the end goal. Leadership is not something you can demand,...

...and vision. The cornerstones of my leadership principles are trustworthiness and transparency. I take tremendous pride in being open, honest, straightforward and credible. Next, a leader must be intelligent, an ability that is necessary for sound decision-making. My educational background and my work experience have trained me to be an analytical and critical thinker. As an experienced, senior-level professional, I am capable of resolving confidential issues, managing complex situations and have the capacity to multi-task very successfully. I am an experienced visionary leader. Throughout my entire career, I have implemented initiatives that have improved citizens’ quality of life by focusing on public safety. That being said, I would have to say in most situations, my style of leadership is transformational. The transformational leadership style depends on high levels of communication from management to meet goals. Leaders motivate employees and enhance productivity and efficiency through communication and high visibility. This style of leadership requires the involvement of management to meet goals. I believe I would be described as a good leader. I take being a good leader seriously and have studied leadership for many years. I...

...Leaders strive for the best in their organization and work hard to become successful. My leadership philosophy may be different from others, however, it may be effective as others. Leadership can be learned and practiced. I consider if you practice with ethics in mind then there will be no issues with your followers or organization. Leaders that practice unethically are often viewed in a negative perspective and often ruin their careers. Great leaders are hard workers and assist in improving the organization. Some are natural leaders, however, it has been stated leaders are made. My view of leadership consists of different types of leadership styles. It has been disclosed that leaders who possess the charismatic personality have the most effect...

...Personal Leadership Style (AS IS) Introduction Everyone wants to be a good leader in life. This paper reflects my personal thoughts on my leadership. Completing the questions under the nine components of Campbell’s leadership descriptor has helped me to understand what a good leader is. I will talk about how my experiences in different societal settings has helped in shaping my views on what a good leader is and how a good leader needs to understand the diverse nature of individuals in the world. According to King, Altman & Lee (2011), knowledge on leadership helps an individual find his/her way out of drift, or even avoid it altogether. Understanding my leadership profile has helped me work from a place of strength as well as understand gaps in my set of skills (King, Altman & Lee 2011). It was not until I Completed the leadership profile section in chapter five of the “discovering the leader in you” workbook that I was able to improve my self-awareness, understand my strengths and areas that I needed to work on. Living and working in Nigeria where there is a lot of power distance and required acts of respect to elders (bosses, older people in ages and ranks), I learned to only deal with people with a high level of respect and fear. Respect in the sense that, you could not look at your elders or bosses in the eye, must always refer to them as “ma” or “sir”, cannot speak to them except you are asked to speak. Then, I came to the USA and it was an almost opposite experience...

...For me, leadership is not about being the person with the best abilities. Rather, leadership involves the ability to pass on one’s knowledge to others and encourage others to do their best. I am acknowledged not only for my independent successes but also for my ability to work with other students and be a leader in the classroom environment. I often finish my work quickly, which presents me with plentiful opportunity to assist other students with their own assignments. Peers are often more approachable than a teacher, so it is extremely important that I work to provide an additional way for my classmates to find understanding in class content. For example, in my AP Computer Science class last year, I would roll around to my friends every day...

...Personal Leadership Style Rita Tyeptanar Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted on July 26, 2015, for Professor De La Cruz H300/HSA3110 Section 01 Introduction to Healthcare Administration course. Have you ever been to a job interview and been asked “What is your leadership style” and “What is your strength or weaknesses with your leadership style, and how would you improve your weaknesses”? Well in this paper I am going to go over what I feel is my leadership style, what my strength and weaknesses are and how I would improve my weaknesses. This is all very good information to know very well as you enter into a new career because when you are asked this you will be able to answer the interviewer strongly and confident without any hesitation, which in turn could make you win the job over. When doing my research on leadership styles I have found that I am actually a combination of two leadership styles, affiliative leader and democratic leader. An Affiliative leader is someone who works to create emotional bonds that bring a feeling of belonging to the organization. This type of leader has the frame of mind that people come first. I have always been the type of person that really cares about other people, and their needs and wants over my own and I feel that would reflect the type of leader that I would become. I also feel though that I would be a democratic leader as well because if I need to I am able to pull everyone together and get their...

...My Reflection of Personal Leadership Leadership can be interrupted in many different ways; for the most part everyone in society has to become one in order to achieve full success in their lives. I base my leadership through my own experience, growing up I had many jobs, I was part of many teams, many adult figures had a say and everyone those things taught me a little a bit of what it is to be a leader. Each one of my experiences was integral part of what I hold as a standard for being an ultimate leader. Much of these experiences I encountered always had certain goals that we were trying to reach, and if we met that goal we would raise the bar even more, as I’ve always stated “good can always can turn to better”. What I mean by this is a leader is always trying to evolve, learn more, listen to feedback, willing to be challenged, always having an open mind, all these things are key in being a leader. A leader is someone who is willing to be go above a beyond for his organization or team, I think the most effective leaders lead by example, there is a quote I live by it says “what you do speaks so loud, that I cannot hear you”. This puts into perspective how ones actions are viewed your team/organization needs to see you work hard, take criticism, be dependable, will instill accountability, will encourage, and most importantly make sure he/she gets the job done. A leader is only as good as its weakest link, he needs to make sure everyone is working in unison, and if not...

...Introduction: The aim of this week’s literature synthesis is to understand the relationship between personal ethic and ethic as a leader in an organization. Moreover, the role of ethic in action research will be illuminated. Does absolute ethics exist? Firstly, it is important to understand more deeply what ethics mean. According to McDonald (2010) plays the construct of ethical relativism and ethical absolutism a crucial role in understanding the ethical theory. In fact, the central question is if a universal ethical standard exists or not. Supporters of the ethical relativism deny the existence of a global ethical and moral standard. They argue that ethics is depending on social customs, conventions or cultures (McDonald, 2010). Nevertheless,...

...Epiphany One I am a servant leader. This came as surprise as I had never heard of servant leadership prior to this course; yet, I had been practicing all of the traits and behaviors all of my life, which basically ruined my childhood. The relief of finally recognizing that I was not alone in the world, that there were others who not only act as I do, but others who strive to act as I do, and even more surprising, others who value how I act, completely caught me off guard. When I read the chapter, I was at home with my husband and broke down sobbing. I was taken aback that many of my personal attributes were listed in a book, and that I was not horrible person, like my father, mother, and sister had told me I was my entire life. I have...

...My Personal Leadership Experience Megan Schlafer Transformational Leadership/LS335 November 6, 2012 Dr. Mary Weber My Personal Leadership Experience The following paper will include a brief explanation of my occupational background, as well as a discussion of the circumstances, experiences, and people who I believe have helped my leadership ability. It will go on to explore my own experience and abilities in leadership roles, described by my viewpoints, and future ambitions related to leadership. Further detail will be examined of my leadership philosophies, style, and where I have put them into action. Lastly, I will conclude the extent to which I feel my leadership abilities are consistent with transformative leadership principles, as well as how these abilities will help me in the future. I will also discuss how I might strengthen said abilities in the present. Occupational Background I entered the workplace by the age of fourteen. I managed to get a job bussing tables at a supper club on the lake. I continued working in restaurants until the age of nineteen, moving up the ladder from busser, to hostess, and eventually settling on bartending. I liked restaurant work, for the most part. Truth be told, it was the money that kept me in the field. My experience was so narrow, that I had a hard time getting out of it. Management at this point in my life was never something that interested me; I was content just doing my job. I was immature, and did not...

...Developing a Philosophy of Leadership A leadership philosophy is the way we see ourselves as leaders. This philosophy guides our actions, our behaviors, and our thoughts. Our philosophies are influenced by external and internal forces. We can change who we are as leaders by simply changing our philosophy of leadership. Leadership philosophies can change as you grow to understand yourself within the context of leading. Creating or finding your leadership philosophy means that you must explore and reflect upon your personal values, assumptions, and beliefs about leadership. Personal values are qualities or characteristics that you value. You would rather leave an organization or step down as a leader than violate your values. Your values guide your intentions and they influence how you lead. When your personal values are clear and you are conscious of them, you create a solid foundation for leading. Assumptions are ideas that are assumed or believed to be true. As a leader it is important to understand what assumptions fuel your leadership thinking. Often leaders are not aware of the assumptions because they are operating from certain paradigms that will not allow them to see assumptions. Reflection into one’s leadership is an excellent way to uncover assumptions. Beliefs are ideas that we hold to be true; they shape our realities. If a leader believes that the only individuals in an organization that can make decisions is the management staff, then that belief will...
